1 February 8, 2013 Weekly Newsletter Volume 1, Edition 5 Newsletter WSBC & WSCC Updates OSD Basketball teams, boys and girls, played their last games with Washington School for the Deaf for 4 th or 6 th place in the WSBC tournament. Boys Game 15 OSD 47 FINAL WSD 13 Girls Game 16 OSD 26 WSD 35 FINAL Our cheerleading team competed well and unfortunately OSD did not place third or better. We applaud our teams for their excellent sportsmanship and efforts in all events that we participated on the court and off the court during the WSBC and WSCC events. Awards Ceremony was Saturday, Feb. 2 nd, night, followed by the tournament social. Cheer Basketball Maria was awarded 2 nd Team All Star Emmanuel 1 st Team All Star Daniela was awarded 2 nd Team All Star Malcolm got the Most Valuable Player for the consolation bracket Our Boys placed 4 th Our Girls placed 6 th Poetry Out Loud is celebrating her 5 th year of involvement with Poetry Out Loud! It was created by the National Endowment of the Arts, for the Arts and Poetry Foundation and run by state arts agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Oregon was the very first state to fully involve deaf students. OSD set the standards for applying the criteria for written poems translated to ASL recitation nationwide. The competition starts at the school level. Right now, schools all over the country are holding contests. School champions will move on to the regional competitions. Champions of each region compete at the state level. Each state sends one performer to nationals in Washington DC. In 2009, OSD s own Tiffany Hill competed at Nationals and every year since, our students have been finalists at the state level. Participants must choose a poem from a list provided by Poetry Out Loud. There are hundreds to choose from. You can find all of the poems and more information about this very special competition at poetryoutloud.org. Memorizing and performing works of poetry can benefit a person for a lifetime. The words and phrases jangle around inside of us forever. When a student goes through the process to change written poems into American Sign Language, they learn the poems from the inside out. They stand inside the poem, like we stand in our clothes, in our skin. It s poetry in 3-D but no glasses necessary. We hold two rounds of competition at OSD. Page 1
2 February 8, 2013 Weekly Newsletter Volume 1, Edition 5 Round 1 Round one was February 6 held in a special assembly. Sixteen students put in the work of translating, memorizing and bravely performing one famous poem of their own choosing. I was so proud of all the students who stood on that stage by themselves. It was a wonderful experience for everyone watching. Elementary school recites Rain, an original poem The entire school participated in the program. Elementary students performed a little poem of their own creation titled Rain. The middle school ASL Choir performed The Star Spangled Banner brilliantly. Last year s champion, Maxwell Dexter sent a video with words of wisdom for this year s performers. Round 2 This Wednesday, February 13 (7:30pm at the Ike Box in Salem), we will hold our final round with 5 finalists. They are Ben Mendez, Hunter Morelli, Lyndsie Onaka, Maria DeLeon and Taylor Clark. They are now practicing a second poem to add to their performances. I hope to see some of your faces at the Ike Box next Wednesday!
