School Closed on Nov. 10 in Observation of Veteran s Day OSD will be closed on Nov. 10 to observe Veteran s Day (Nov. 11) and we will be open on Nov. 11 th. OSD Kitchen Health Inspection As a part of our responsibilities to provide nutritional meals to our students. We also are responsible for keeping our kitchen clean and safe. We are pleased to share with you that we have obtained a perfect score from the Food Service Marion County Health Inspection. As always we are committed to your health and nutrition needs. Academics University of Oregon ASL Club Visit By Katelyn Castro and Liz Donnelly Hello! I just wanted to send a HUGE thank you to Matt Boyd and the entire OSD team for the best field trip EVER! We gained so much from the tour of OSD, the Nightmare Factory was terrifying (but SO much fun!), and we learned so much that could not be replaced in a textbook. We will CERTAINLY be back to see B.E.A.T this spring. Page 1

2 We also wanted to let you know that if you ever need volunteers for events, please let us know! Our club is mixed between ASL 101/201/graduated/barely any sign students. There's around 30 students that show up every week, and we are always looking for opportunities to become involved with the Deaf community. What exactly would that be like? Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers has asked himself that question and took it one step further during the team's bye week, returning to Oregon State for Saturday's matchup against California. The former Beavers star, who owns the school record for 151 career receptions, was not looking for notoriety when he visited the Oregon School for the Deaf while he was in town. Instead, he wanted to instill hope to students who face the challenges that accompany deafness. Rodgers was inspired by the students' smiles as he answered questions about his time in the NFL, before leaving the group with a word of continued encouragement. "Everybody has challenges," Rodgers said. "Each challenge offers an opportunity to use it to your advantage, making the most out of what you are able to do. I told them if they keep pushing through in life, working hard, success will come their way." University of Oregon ASL Club Thanks again for having us, Katelyn Castro and Liz Donnelly Rodgers Teaches, Receives Life Lesson in BYE By Atlanta Falcons (Reid Ferrin) What would life be like if you couldn't hear a thing, like the sound of running water, before a morning shower, or no sweet sounds of a "hello" or "good bye" from a loved one? Rodgers pose with the Elementary students. Page 2

3 Community Welcome to the community section where outside community organizations and our outreach programs can communicate and share with others. Family Story Night On November 6, OSD Parents Organization hosted a Family Story Night, their first annual event at OSD. We had great storytellers signing stories from books of various levels in ASL! The children and parents in attendance were mesmerized into the stories told that night through the power of ASL. It was also an opportunity for parents and children to mingle with each other and to reinforce the importance of reading as a skill. student activities throughout the year including the Prom, Carnival, LIFE and Senior Day! We will be selling wreaths and cookie dough. Please see the attached flyer in the end of the newsletter for details. Our students will also have booklets to bring home with them for any orders. Please encourage your students to go out in the community and to participate in the fundraiser. Gallaudet Academic Bowl Volunteers Wanted By Jonathan Myers I am coordinating the Gallaudet Academic Bowl event that OSD will be hosting in February. We will be hosting 16 teams for a total of approximately 80 students and coaches & support staff. We will need volunteers to help and facilitate this event, which will occur when school is out of session. We will also be hosting our first volunteer training session in conjunction with Gallaudet University Academic Bowl facilitator on Nov. 19 th. The training session will run from 330PM to 730PM and please come if you are able to. If you are unable to attend we will have another training in the future before the event in February. Parents and students watched as the storyteller told stories in ASL. SBC / SBG Holiday Fundraiser By SBC / SBG Student Body Council (MS) and Student Body Government (HS) are hosting a joint holiday fundraiser. Funds raised will be used to support Volunteers will do some of the following: - Moderate the competition - Handle students responses - Event Support / Security - Hospitality - And more If you are interested in volunteering please let me know. You can reach me at Page 3

4 and you will be required to complete a background check. You can obtain our volunteer application form on our website at and by navigating to the Volunteer Program under the Community tab. If you have any questions about filling out the volunteer application, you can contact Sharon Thompson at sharon.thompson@osd.k12.or.us or you can call us at - Voice (503) VideoPhone (503) Thank you.
