3 PROGRAM INFORMATION Gymnastics is an immensely challenging sport, requiring years of preparation to reach the higher performance levels. While gymnastics is inherently fun, it also deeply enriches and educates the lives of its participants in ways unreachable by most other activities and sport. Recreational gymnasts seeking higher level training need to be prepared to have a greater level of commitment and competency before being invited or accepted for progression into our Levels Program. Gymnasts at these levels are then trained to represent Splitz at Invitational, Regional, & State Championships. COACHING STAFF All coaches are qualified with the Australian Gymnastics Federation and are carefully selected by the Business Owners with the program consisting of a Head Coach, Senior Competitive Coaches, and Junior Coaches. Gymnast to Coach Ratio The target ratio for our MAG programs is not more than 10 gymnasts to one coach. MAG LEVELS PROGRAM DESCRIPTION MAG Levels is a more structured program that provides coaching in the six apparatus that Men s Gymnastics uses. The six apparatus that gymnasts in this program learn are Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars, and Horizontal Bar. A higher level of commitment is required in our Levels Program than in Jumpstart due to the time it takes for the boys to develop the skills on each and every apparatus and in each level. A commitment to each training session is required, except in the case of sickness. Gymnasts should also be committed for the full competitive season and set calendar which is from October to September. The Junior Levels Program is usually for boys aged from 5 to 12 years and is a progression from Jumpstart Boys. Boys can also join this program without prior experience depending on their ability. The Program caters for boys who want to work on their fitness and gain some strength and learn the basics of Men s Gymnastics skills. PRE LEVEL The Pre Levels classes are the introduction to our Levels Program. Boys usually start in this program when they are 4½ to 6 years old. Boys can enter this program from either the Kindergym or the Jumpstart programs. Our MAG coaching staff view our recreational classes on a regular basis and make offers for our competitive program. If they think your child would benefit from the extra challenge, you will receive a letter of offer for one of our competitive classes. Pre Level boys do not take part in competitions and don't require any specific uniforms. The boys will work through a booklet that has a series of awards with certificates for physical conditioning. The Pre Levels Program teaches the basic skills of the 6 Men s Gymnastics apparatus: Vault, Parallel Bars, Rings, Pommel, High Bar, and Floor. Boys in this program work on their strength, flexibility, and trampoline work as well as the basic skills included in the Level 1 program. Progression from this class is into Level 1. Boys receive a progression letter of offer to these classes when they are ready to move up. LEVEL 1 Level 1 is the first level of the National Gymnastics Program of which there are 10 levels. Entry into this program is usually via invitation or alternately, parents can put their son s name down at the front desk if they want more of a challenge. They will then be assessed by one of our MAG coaches. Level 1and 2 gymnasts attend 2 x 2 hour training sessions for a total of 4 hours per week. Not all apparatus will be coached in each session, therefore, attendance at both sessions is vital. 3
4 As a guide, gymnasts usually spend one-and- a-half years in each level. However, because each child progresses at a different rate, it is not uncommon for gymnasts to spend up to 2 years in a level to make sure they have mastered the skills needed for progression to more advanced skills. Level tests are held in conjunction with our Club Championships or external competitions when gymnasts are ready to be tested. Gymnasts in the Levels Program will also learn and develop other skills outside their set routines such as: Strength, Flexibility, and Trampoline work. This program requires a higher level of commitment than the recreational programs. As such, gymnasts need to commit to the full competition season to be assured a place in the program. LEVEL 2 Entry into this program is usually via invitation or alternately, parents can put their son s name down at the front desk if they want more of a challenge. They will then be assessed by a MAG coach. As a guide, gymnasts usually spend one-and- a-half years in each level. However, because each child progresses at a different rate, it is not uncommon for gymnasts to spend up to 2 years in a level to make sure they have mastered the skills needed for progression to more advanced skills. This program requires a higher level of commitment than the recreational programs. As such, gymnasts need to commit to the full competition season to be assured a place in the program. Level 3 is attained at a Gymnastics Queensland-sanctioned event or competition. Gymnasts learn routines from the National Level 2 & 3 programs. INTERCLUB EVENTS LEVEL 3 AND UPWARDS Gymnasts from Level 3 and upwards can attend the following competitions: Two to three invitational events either held at Splitz or other clubs in South East Queensland during the competitive season. This can include Regional Championships and State Championships, if qualified. During the competitive season, some events will also be scheduled to encourage team competition. Points are allocated for particular results during the competitive season and are used to decide the club s End of Year Awards. POINT ALLOCATION SYSTEM COMPETITION ALL AROUND APPARATUS 1ST 2ND 3RD 1ST 2ND 3RD ONE INVITIATIONAL BRISBANE SOUTH REGIONALS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS NA NA NA POINTS FOR THESE COMPETITIONS ARE AWARDED AS ABOVE AND TOTALLED FOR THE END OF YEAR AWARD TRAINING REQUIREMENTS All boys in the Levels 1 2 program will need to train in a training leotard, with longs or shorts. (This uniform to be reconfirmed). All boys will need to bring a water bottle to training. Check with your MAG coach to ascertain if loops and guards are required for training. 4
5 COMPETITION SCHEDULES Athletes are required to attend all competitions set down in the calendar. It is the responsibility of the parents to enter their sons in the events set down by the scheduled date. Individual season is from April to June and includes all Invitational, Regional Championships, State Championships, and National Championships. Team Season is from August until the end of September and includes Queensland Club Championships and potentially, National Club Championships. Athletes are required to attend and fulfill their team obligations in team season. This means being available for selection in all team events. Athletes are required to purchase all uniforms needed for events. MAG COMPETITIONS The beginning of competitive gymnastics is Level 3 and is the first level of Individual State Championships. Level 1 2 competitions are used to teach the basics of gymnastics and to provide competition experience. Boys in Level 1 2 are not expected to be highly competitive and are not pressured for results. We believe this only sets them up to fail in the competitive levels. Athletes must be free to make mistakes and to learn from them each time they attend a competition. COMPETITION ENTRIES Competition entries are all done online via the splitzgym.com.au website. A calendar with the scheduled due date for each competition s entries is published at the start of the year. This is also available on the website. You will require a log in for the Member s Area. Once you are logged in, click on Events at the top of the page, then on Event Calendar on the left. You can then search for the event in order to register and pay the entry fee. Make sure you click on add attendee to add your child s details. This information is necessary so that Splitz Gym can trace who the payment is from. Please remember the events calendar changes regularly due to outside influences, so make sure you keep up to date by checking the website on a regular basis. Please remember that it is the responsibility of parents to enter their athlete by the due date for the event scheduled in the calendar. QUALIFICATIONS FOR COMPETITIONS Once gymnasts enter Level 3, they are eligible for selection for State Championships. To qualify for this event, athletes must obtain the required qualification score for their level as determined by Gymnastics Queensland. They must also attend Regional Championships. If your son is unable to attend Regionals due to sickness or an injury, it is possible for the coach to seek a special exemption from Gymnastics Queensland to allow him to attend State Championships. REGIONAL, STATE & NATIONAL REPRESENTATION With progression through the levels, athletes become eligible for selection into the following teams: Level 3, 4, 5 and 6 Brisbane South Regional Teams to compete at State Championships (Top 6 per team) Level 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 State Team to compete at National Championships (usually top 6 at Trials) Level 9 and 10 Australian Team to compete overseas every 2 nd year. (Top 4 at Nationals) COMPETITION PROCEDURE Athletes and parents must abide by the MAG Code of Points code of conduct for all competitions. These rules can be accessed on the Gymnastics Australia website, under Men s Gymnastics > Technical information. Once an athlete is on the competition floor, they cannot have any contact with parents or spectators. To do so will risk disqualification. Parents must not communicate with a judge about their son s performance or scores. Athletes must be in correct uniform for all events. 5
6 UNIFORMS Gymnasts must be dressed appropriately for training and cannot use the training or competition uniforms from another club. All competitive and training apparel is available to order through reception from our official suppliers. s regarding the ordering of uniforms are sent early in the competitive season. Please take note of the cut-off date for orders. PARENTAL SUPPORT For gymnasts to reach their goals, it is vital for each athlete to have the support of their parents and the coaching team. If you would like to discuss your child s training, please send your child s coach an to let them know you would like to speak with them. The coach will then find a time that suits both parties. Please remember that some coaches either come straight from or to another class, so it may not be possible to speak with them immediately before or after class. TEAM COMPETITION SELECTIONS Team season is generally around August / September, but is reliant on Gymnastics Queensland s calendar. Athletes in the program are required to be available for all team selections that are scheduled in the calendar. Usually, up to seven gymnasts are selected for a team with up to five allocated to compete on any given apparatus and with up to four scores counting toward the team s total score. This means that boys may not compete on every apparatus, but their membership and commitment toward the team is still vital. There are many variations on this format and the procedure can depend on the competition. Our coaches are responsible for the selection of teams, which is based on historical Individual scores, attendance, commitment to training, and the gymnast s ability to contribute to the team score. The goal when selecting teams is to choose the gymnasts that are likely to produce the best results for Splitz Gym. Decisions are never made on a personal basis. We only have the best competition outcome in mind. The final team lists are given to the competition organisers and parents should respect the decision of the coaching team. STRETCHING AND FLEXIBILITY Stretching and Flexibility programs are a part of the boys training and are scheduled into normal training sessions. Most coaches will provide a home program for boys who need to work on this at home. Flexibility varies between athletes and a regular program at home needs to be carried out to keep up the demands of skills for the National Program. HOME PROGRAMS Home Programs can also be given to athletes in periods of absence or when on holidays. It takes a long period of time to build the necessary strength to be successful in the levels program and a very short period of absence to lose that strength. As such, adherence to a home program is critical in times of sustained absence. Alternatively, your son can ask for a program if he just wants to increase his strength. Please talk to your son s coach if he needs one of these programs. VIEWING POLICY While we encourage all parents to take an interest in their child s classes and support them where needed, it is important during training that our athletes are focused on the instructions their coach is giving them. As such, Splitz Gym has a limited viewing policy so athletes are free to train without having to look over at their parents or carers for approval or support. For all MAG Programs, viewing is restricted to the last week of each term. If you have a reason you need to stay, please seek permission from the MAG Head Coach. 6

REFUND POLICY There are no refunds, particularly for gymnasts withdrawing during a calendar month or school term. Only students cancelling their participation in a gymnastic program part way through a term as a result of sickness or injury will be considered for a refund if: Their absence was for more than two weeks. Their application is accompanied by a Doctor s Certificate, clearly stating that the gymnast cannot continue. Gymnasts in these circumstances have an option to carry over a credit of their unused tuition to the next or subsequent term, less the value of two weeks tuition. 7
8 If all of the above criteria are met, applications will be considered on their merit. If these issues cannot be resolved, then the athlete is required to give one month s paid notice in writing to the Head Coach, so every effort can be made to ensure the athlete finishes their time in the program on a positive note. PAYMENT METHODS All payments for competition entries etc. are to be done through the Splitz Gym website unless there has been a prior arrangement made for a regular direct debit. COMPENSATION FOR COACH ABSENCE It is inevitable during the competitive season that those gymnasts who have not qualified for State Championships and State Club may lose a small amount of training time with their usual coach as that coach may be assigned to train with team members who have qualified. EXTRA FEES & LEVIES Extra fees and levies are applied to accounts for various costs over and above normal tuition. These include: Competition entry fees Travel and accommodation as a team Contribution to chaperone expenses as required Levy for coaching expenses, if not part of normal training hours when at competitions Levy for Judges expenses at competitions. COMPETITION AND TRAVEL EXPENSES INCLUDING COACHES, JUDGES & CHAPERONES Competition entry fees are set by Gymnastics Qld, Gymnastics Australia, or the hosting organisation. These fees must be collected approximately seven WEEKS prior to each event and paid before the closing date for each event via the website. Team travel and accommodation as well as a levy for the Coaches and Judges costs travelling to competitions outside the normal Brisbane area is included in the costs for participating in the event. This also applies to regional and interstate competitions requiring long distance travel and accommodation. The rate of subsidy is dependent on the number of gymnasts who qualify. Our programs provide good opportunity for all to qualify for these events, but qualification depends on individual results. As indicated above, the team must also contribute to Chaperone expenses for travel and accommodation for comps as described above. These Chaperones are normally parents of team members and are expected to work long and hard to ensure the gymnasts needs are met and they are presented appropriately. The subsidy normally provided to chaperones is between 50 and 100% of the value of their travel and accommodation. CHAPERONES Chaperones are an important part of our away trips and while they have a demanding job, it can also be a very rewarding one. Applications for chaperone positions can be made prior to the away trip and positions will be granted according to experience and attendance on previous trips. Parents should understand that special requests to be put in the same room or team as their son will on most occasions not be possible due to the purpose and goals of an away trip. 8

All must show respect for coaches, fellow participants, and officials. Conduct yourself in a manner that does not result in actions that could be dangerous to yourself or others. Be courteous and considerate of the needs of others at all times. Remember that you are participating in gymnastics for enjoyment. Focus on efforts and performance rather than winning or losing. Never ridicule or yell at anyone for making a mistake or failing to achieve their objectives. Always applaud good efforts by all. Support all efforts of your club to remove negative and/or destructive behaviour. Respect the decisions of judges, coaches, and management. Represent Splitz Gym with pride and dignity. Show your appreciation for the Coaches, Judges, Volunteers, Officials, and Administrators of the Club for without them there would be no club. Remember that your clubs personnel have feelings too, so please express your opinions in a constructive and helpful manner avoiding gossip and rumour. Offer your assistance and expertise to the club and encourage children to do the same to help build a better club. Many efforts by members make a more successful and harmonious club. Support your club personnel by offering them your trust and confidence and show interest in what they are doing. They are always striving to do their best to support the interests of gymnasts, first and foremost, and indeed all who enter the Gym. We ask that you address any questions regarding training to the Head Coaches. If not satisfied, we ask that you bring them to management. In some instances, we may ask that you put your concerns in writing to allow us to effectively address them. Alternatively we have an MPIO who may also be contactable. If you have issues or concerns with any aspect of the operation of Splitz Gym, please present those issues to the appropriate person in an open and considerate manner seeking first to understand and then to be understood. In some instances, we may ask that you put your concerns in writing to allow us to effectively address them. Most of all remember that our club is, in fact, the sum of its members and that all parents and children should be given the opportunity to have a say. Not every parent and child will like gymnastics and if this is you or your child, that s okay our club would be happy to suggest other Gym Programs or sports that may be better suited to their interests and abilities. 11
