9 AT THE GYM Absences Written notification must be given to the gymnasts coach for any absences longer than 2 consecutive lessons, stating grounds for the absence. This helps coaches monitor the participants health (if absence is due to illness or injury) and modify activities if necessary on their return. If extended breaks are planned to be taken during term, coaches need to be advised as crucial leadup skills are missed during the child s absence, so activities on their return will need to be modified accordingly. If a child is absent from multiple training sessions without the club being informed it may be assumed that they have withdrawn and their position may be lost and fees forfeited. Boundary Setting Children usually have a clear sense of their physical and psychological boundaries. What they do not have are the skills to negotiate those boundaries, or the authority to insist upon them. Coaching children in gymnastics will usually involve some physical contact: assisting and guiding the gymnast, supporting them in some exercises, providing spotting and correcting errors. Some coaches use physical contact more than others and children vary in their responses to it. Children are entitled to set their own limits and should be reinforced in refusing any contact that transgresses their boundaries. We encourage you, as parents and caregivers to discuss these issues with the coaching staff, to talk to other parents of the gymnasts and to satisfy yourself that the club and coach are thinking about the needs of your child. Set up and Pack away of Equipment It is expected that all parents/guardians where possible assist with set up / pack away of the club s equipment, especially after training. As the club uses quite a large amount of equipment, assistance ensures that the club s coaches do not become physically overloaded. Some equipment is heavy or awkward, if correct pack away techniques are not known please speak to a coach who can instruct on the correct manual handling process and storage location.
