1 Whether you will be traveling or staying home this summer, we ve got the perfect incentive for you to stay active all season long! What is Get Fit on Route 66? A health improvement program designed to help you get fit and have fun as you trace the famous route of this legendary highway passing through eight states from the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, California. How does it work? For every minute of exercise, you mark off 1 mile along the 2,448-mile route if you log 30 or more minutes a day, you earn a Route 66 road sign. With nearly 30 bonus physical activities to choose from, participants complete the program feeling more energetic and with daily fitness as part of their lifestyle. Contest runs from June 1 July 27, Who can participate? All Ivy Tech students, faculty, staff, and community members can participate. Get Fit on Route 66 lets participants travel at their own pace, so it s perfect for every fitness level. With so many activity selections, anyone can successfully navigate this road to better fitness. 1
2 Outdoor activities are plentiful this time of year. Plus, you can earn a bonus of 15-minutes (miles) of exercise if you do any of the following activities: Canoeing / Kayaking Rock Climbing Take a walk along the river Swim laps Participate in a 5K Go ice skating or roller skating Participate in a Energize Evansville activity on a Saturday Go for a bike ride in your neighborhood or explore the Pigeon Creek Greenway Go hiking Wesselman, Burdette, Audubon, Harmonie State Park, etc. Play a sport such as baseball, sand volleyball, etc. Visit a Farmer s Market Participate in a Healthier U Walk on a Saturday morning Walk around Mesker Park Zoo Explore a cave Include your kids in your physical activity plans (i.e. jump rope or play hopscotch together) Workout at the Ivy Tech Fitness Center Pack a healthy lunch and go on a picnic Do a home workout routine (ask an Ivy Tech personal trainer for assistance) Walk one of Ivy Tech s outdoor walking trails (Get a map at the Fitness Center.) Participate in one of Ivy Tech s group exercise classes How do we know you completed any of these bonus activities? You will be taking selfies while doing each activity and you will the photos to alutzel@ivytech.edu. Each person will have a map of Route 66 posted in the Fitness Center where we will keep track of where you are on your journey. You will log your activity and number of minutes you exercised. For any one day you exercise for at least 30 minutes, you will receive a Route 66 road sign. You will hang these up where you can proudly display them. Then, people will ask you why you have the signs and you will tell them it s because of all the exercise you have accomplished! Also, since there are eight states you will be traveling through, you will receive a small prize after you travel through 4 states and again after you travel through all 8 states. When you turn in your log sheets every two weeks, we will provide you with your Route 66 signs and determine if you are eligible for a prize at that point. Please be honest when logging your exercise. For anyone who makes it all the way to Santa Monica, California, they will be entered to win two free tickets to Holiday World & Splashin Safari! Drawing will be the week of Monday, July 30. 2
