2 Welcome address from Dean Dr Padraig Sheeran MB ChB, FFA RCSI, FRCS Ed., FFSEM, DTM&H, FJFICMI Consultant Anaesthetist - Our Lady s Children Hospital, Crumlin Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI Dear Delegates, The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine. The modules are delivered during the academic year, and address a number of topics. Our first 2 modules (Anti-Doping & Pharmacology in November 2013, and Concussion in February 2014) were well attended, and we hope that today s module, as well as our final module on The Travelling Team scheduled on 17th May will be as popular! On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to RCSI this morning for the SEMSEP Module 3 on Disability in Sports & Physical Activity for Health. My younger brother Edmund suffered disabling limb and spinal defects as a result of exposure to thalidomide in the ante-natal period. In his first few months of life he had redundant thumbs excised, and amputation of his right leg. Growing up with him, one word would recall his spirit; irrepressible. He always felt he had something to prove. At the age of 16, as part of a 3 man school team, he won the deciding match in the Merseyside Open Squash Competition. This was rightly splashed across all the local newspapers.
3 It did not matter what challenge he took on. Judge me by what I can do not by what I am. He then followed us into medical school. The determination and drive that disabled athletes have, to achieve or to prove, puts all our efforts into context. I hope you learn as much this morning as I hope to. Physical inactivity results in premature deaths and costs the NHS (UK) around 91 million annually and is the second biggest cause of mortality. Being physically active can help prevent and treat more than 20 chronic diseases. Today s speakers should get you thinking! Please note that additional CPD activities will come out from the SEMSEP modules next year, and we hope to advertise them in the Autumn. We look forward to the various modules being delivered this year by our team of SEM experts and guest speakers, and we value your feedback after each module. Dr Padraig Sheeran Dean of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, RCPI & RCSI HEALTH AND SCIENCE PROMOTION OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND EXCELLENCE IN SPORT PERFORMANCE WE ARE COMMITTED TO BE THE LEADER AND PRIME REFERENCE IN EDUCATION, ETHICS AND SCIENCE FOR SPORTS AND EXERCISE MEDICINE IN IRELAND
