2 Page 2 A Note from Denise Dickey SATISFACTION SURVEY RESULTS You, the customers, have spoken and we have listened! Thank you to all who completed and submitted a customer satisfaction survey recently. The results have been tallied at our home office and shared with the facility staff. There were many words of kind praise shared, as well as suggestions for further improvement. The focus areas we will be striving to improve this year based on your feedback include: Quality of food Health and wellness care Housekeeping services Stay tuned as we update you on our efforts and progress throughout the year! RESIDENT COUNCIL During our recent Resident Council meeting, there were several topics discussed. At the top of that list is the need to replace Resident Council offices. The Resident Council is currently searching for a President, Vice President, and Secretary. If you are interested in filling one of these valuable offices, please let the Activity Director know. The Resident Council is YOUR voice in the community. It is very important, and your participation and attendance is extremely valuable. NEW & IMPROVED In our ongoing efforts to continually improve the services we deliver to The Hearth residents, please take note of the following enhancements: Monthly themed luncheons and dinners will be part of the activity calendar. These will be great social events. Watch for these on the activity calendar. We have a new Director of Community Relations that started with us in January. Her name is Mary Ann Lux. She comes to us with great experience and a wonderful personality. Please be sure to make her feel welcomed as a new part of the Hearth Family. As always, I thank you all for the incredible feeling of family that permeates The Hearth at Stones Crossing. I am privileged to be a part of The Hearth Family! Take Care, Live Well and Live More ~ Denise L. Dickey Did you know that more than ¾ of the elderly population currently do not exercise at the recommended physical level that a doctor would recommend? Here at the Hearth at Stones Crossing, we provide a wide range of one on one physical exercise classes that fit each resident based on your physical levels. We also provide group exercise classes that help the Residents interact with one another in a smaller group than in a larger group like in Activities. Our groups have anywhere from 3 to 6 people that participate in our exercising groups. We would love to have some new Residents participate in our groups here at the Hearth. Tuesday at 11am we have a Balance Class, we use the Wii to improve our balance and posture in a fun way. Wednesdays we have started a Cycling Club with our Keepsake Village Residents. Chair Yoga on Wednesdays at 3pm up in the NuStep Room, were we will go along with a calm yoga video. Thursdays we have our Upper Body class at 11am, in which we do various exercises to try and strengthen our arm and shoulder muscles. These help the Residents in their everyday lives with activities like dressing, getting up and down in a chair and much more. Come see Karlana located on the second floor in the Therapy Room for any questions that you may have.

4 Page 4 February is Heart Month! Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Heart disease can frequently be prevented and risks lowered when we manage our health concerns and make healthier choices. How can YOU decrease your risk? Quit Smoking Your risk for developing heart disease is two to four times greater than that of non-smokers. Smoking increases your blood pressure, increases your heart rate, decreases cardiac output and coronary blood flow, decreases oxygen that reaches body tissues, changes the properties of blood vessels/cells therefore allowing cholesterol and other fatty build up, increases your risk for blood clots and damages the blood vessels. Control your blood pressure There are often no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure. However nervousness, sweating, blood spots on the eye, difficulty sleeping or facial flushing can be indicators. Having your blood pressure checked regularly is important and knowing what is a normal reading for you. Take your medication at the same time every day. Decrease your sodium intake Make small changes to your diet. Try using spices to season food instead of salt. Use lower sodium recipes for meals, and the Hearth provides No Added Salt (NAS) options. Exercise A lifestyle which is inactive is a big risk factor for heart disease. This does not have to be in a gym. You can walk. Participate in Yoga. Grab a partner or find a friend at the Hearth to keep you motivated. Improve your strength, mobility and balance in one of our Move More sessions which can be in a large group Activity or a small group with our Wellness Aide. The Benefits of Exercise: Are there benefits for someone over 65 years old? YES! Regular exercise provides many benefits including protection against loss of bone mass, which can reduce the risk of osteoporosis and lower the risk of falling and broken bones. Regular exercise promotes elimination and encourages digestive health. Regular exercise can help improve blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and neuro-cognitive function. It can also lower the risk of Alzheimer s disease and dementia. There are SO many benefits to moving more! Protect yourself from chronic disease, improve your mood and lower your chances of injury! As well as decrease your risk for heart disease. We look forward to seeing you at a Move More Activity soon!!

On that note we can almost always send one of the drivers to the store if you need necessary supplies. Please inquire with the Receptionist with any questions.
