6 STOTT PILATES EDUCATION GENERAL INFORMATION The STOTT PILATES Advantage STOTT PILATES curriculum is continually updated to ensure it complies with modern exercise science and is relevant to fitness professionals, facility operators and clients. Courses are taught by highly skilled STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor Trainers. Visit stottpilates.com/advantage to review the exclusive benefits available to STOTT PILATES Certified Instructors. Certification and Examinations STOTT PILATES certification shows clients and employers that you are a well-qualified professional. At the conclusion of each course, you receive a letter of completion and continuing education credits. STOTT PILATES certification is awarded upon successful completion of a course plus a written and practical exam. Exam material is cumulative so students can certify in stages by taking an exam after each course or after a series of courses, e.g. students certified in Matwork must take a combined Matwork and Reformer exam should they wish to subsequently certify in Reformer. This also applies to students certified in Reformer who wish to move on to CCB certification. Please note that exams must be taken within six months of the last course completed and that there is a fee associated with each exam. Successful completion of Matwork; Reformer; Cadillac, Chair & Barrels; Advanced Repertoire; ISP courses and exams are required for full certification. Introductory and Continuing Education To maintain certification and stay up-to-date on skills and programming techniques, STOTT PILATES has implemented a Continuing Education Credit (CEC) program for certified instructors. Learn more about CEC workshops on page 47 and refer to stottpilates.com/workshops for complete descriptions. General Course Objectives Our programs provide a balanced and thorough blend of theory, observation and practical experience to help you master the repertoire. In each course, you learn: How to apply STOTT PILATES biomechanical principles of core stability, breathing and alignment to all exercises A complete breakdown of each exercise Exercise goals, muscular initiation and movement sequencing Modifications to increase or decrease exercise intensity Modifications for specific body types and postural issues How to recognize optimal and less than optimal movement patterns A variety of programming options to keep clients motivated Effective communication, verbal cues and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation Observation, Practice Teaching and Physical Review Requirements A minimum number of hours of observation, practice teaching and physical review are required for all courses and should be completed between instructed sessions at any STOTT PILATES facility. Additional training may be required to prepare for certification. Observation includes watching sessions taught by a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor or relevant STOTT PILATES videos. Practice teaching hours can be fulfilled by instructing family, fellow students, friends or clients. A physical review means physically performing the exercises learned in class. Taking a class with a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor or working out with a video can qualify as physical review hours, and can be completed individually or with other students. Practice teaching and physical review hours must be logged outside of class time and submitted at the time of the practical exam. 24 COURSE EXAM FREOUENTLY ASKED OUESTIONS The following questions and answers help explain the procedure to obtain your STOTT PILATES Certification. Q Q How long do I have to complete my course examination? Exams must be taken within six months of completing your last STOTT PILATES Education course. We encourage students to take some time following the course to practice and synthesize the information prior to taking the exam. You are welcome to take the exam immediately following the course if you and your instructor agree that you are ready. Depending on the Training and Certification courses that you have completed you may choose the following exams: Matwork Reformer Mat & Reformer Mat, Reformer, and Cadillac, Chair & Barrels Comprehensive and Intensive Matwork, Reformer, and Cadillac, Chair & Barrels courses cover Essential and Intermediate level exercises and require a Level One exam. Courses that include Advanced level exercises require a Level One & Level Two exam. If you choose to be examined at Level One (written and practical components) and wish to upgrade to a Level Two certification at a later date (practical component only), there is a separate fee. What will I be asked to do for my practical exam? The time allotment for each practical exam is as follows: Matwork 1 hour Mat & Reformer 1.5 hours Mat, Reformer, and Cadillac, Chair & Barrels 2 hours The initial 5 to 10 minutes of the exam are dedicated to gathering pertinent information about your subject, postural analysis, and a general description of the planned workout. You will be required to ask your subject pertinent questions to acquire information on your subject s history, physical condition, and goals. For the postural analysis portion of the exam, you will be required to analyze the subject and verbally relay your findings to the examiner. You are then required to provide a general description of the muscles that you determine should be the focus of the workout and your reasoning for choosing these target muscle groups. The next 5 to 10 minutes are used to take your subject through the Basic Principles, in proper sequence, using clear imagery and movement cues to help the subject properly achieve biomechanical body awareness. You must clearly explain why each of the principles is important. The written component must be conducted at a location where the student can be monitored. This can be either a STOTT PILATES Certification Center (visit our website at for more information on these locations) or a library (public, college, university). The practical component can be conducted in the presence of an Instructor Trainer at a STOTT PILATES Certification Center or can be submitted by videotape (guidelines provided on the following page). Additional Information: Exam material is cumulative. You must receive an average score of 80% (practical and written) and achieve a minimum score of 75% on each portion in order to pass. Both of these requirements must be met in order to achieve certification. The written and practical exams can be conducted over two days but MUST be taken within 7 days of one another. Full Certification requires successful completion of Level One and Level Two exams for Matwork, Reformer, and Cadillac, Chair & Barrels, as well as the successful completion of the Injury & Special Populations course. QWhat if my course finished longer than 6 months ago? If you have failed to meet the six month requirement to complete your examination, you must complete private review hours with an Instructor Trainer to reinstate your eligibility. Material covered will be specific to the needs of the individual to better prepare them for the exam. The number of hours required is based on the course material that must be covered and the demands of the course repertoire. The minimum private session requirements are: Matwork minimum 1 hour Reformer minimum 1 hour Mat & Reformer minimum 1 to 2 hours* Mat, Reformer, & CCB minimum 2 to 3 hours* The remainder of the practical exam is dedicated to taking your subject through an appropriate workout. The following areas will be evaluated: teaching manner and energy (attitude, motivational, verbalization skills) application of the Basic Principles to all exercises ability to cue: use of imagery, verbal cues, and kinesthetic cues (touch) to aid in guiding the subject through the exercises and transitions ability to correct: use of imagery, verbal cues, and kinesthetic cues (touch) to ensure correct alignment and proper execution of exercises knowledge of the relevant repertoire of exercises (movement / breathing patterns) exercise progression and rationale for the exercises chosen applying adaptations and modifications per individual as necessary rhythm and pace of the workout (making the workout fluid, using transitions from one exercise to another, choosing a pace that challenges the individual without compromising the five basic principles or causing overexertion, and cueing in a manner that encourages proper timing of movement and breath) During the practical exam expect to be questioned periodically on the exercises and your choices. The test is designed in this way to evaluate the depth of your understanding regarding the exercises and how to administer them to your subject. After working on each individual piece of equipment you will be asked to teach a few exercises of the examiner s choosing to spot check your knowledge of the entire repertoire. * (at the discretion of the Instructor Trainer)

25 COURSE EXAM FREOUENTLY ASKED OUESTIONS CONT D In addition to understanding the material conceptually and physically reviewing the exercises, the best preparation for the practical exam is by practice teaching as many different people as possible (family, friends, classmates). This allows you to apply your knowledge of the STOTT PILATES method, adapt it to many different body types, improve your teaching skills, and become comfortable with your teaching experience. QWhat do I need to know for my written examination? The written exam consists of 50 multiple choice, 4 fill-in the blank or matching type questions, and 25 muscle identification questions. It will take you approximately 2-3 hours to complete the exam. However, you are not required to finish within a specified time limit. The exam tests your knowledge of the following: Muscle origin, insertion and action (please refer to 1st of muscles in the Mat/Reformer Support Materials book) Recognition of diagrams of individual muscles Concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions of specific muscles during specific movements and exercises Movements that make up exercises and their proper anatomical descriptions Order of essential and intermediate Mat workout (Mat, Mat & Reformer or Mat, Reformer, & CCB exam) Order of essential and intermediate Reformer workout (Reformer, Mat & Reformer or Mat, Reformer, & CCB exam) Ideal postural alignment and groups of opposing muscles Poor postural conditions and muscular imbalances Modifications to exercises for poor postural alignments Programs to accommodate poor postural alignments Proper set up of equipment, starting positions, movement patterns, and major intent or goal for each exercise Basic principles - anatomical descriptions and purpose Proper anatomical terms must be understood and used in all the relevant categories above. Q What if I can t write my exam at a STOTT PILATES Certification Center? A list of all STOTT PILATES Certification Centers is enclosed in this examination information package. If you are unable to complete the written portion of your exam at a STOTT PILATES Certification Center you have the option of writing the exam by Proctor. The conditions of a proctored exam includes the following: A third, uninterested, party (notary or public library) must oversee / supervise the written exam. Written exam must be taken within the 6-month period after the last STOTT PILATES Certification course was completed. Exam fees (practical and written) must be paid in full prior to sending the written exam to the specified Proctor. Use of a public library is standard protocol for most STOTT PILATES Certification course examinations as these locations proctor a variety of examinations for various organizations. PROCTORED EXAM PROCEDURE Contact the STOTT PILATES Education Department at ext. 299 or education@stottpilates.com to express your intent to write an exam. You will need to provide the following information: Exam location (i.e. public library), mailing address, and phone number Contact person supervising the written exam Method of payment (VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, or money order) The exam package will be sent to the contact person at the specified exam location. It will contain the following: STOTT PILATES Certification course written exam (1 copy) Receipt of payment (2 copies) Self-addressed return envelope RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STUDENT: Setting a time and date to write the exam Providing all up-to-date contact information on the front page of the written exam (home/work/fax numbers and address) to notify you of the results Send completed exam, with copy of the receipt of payment attached, in a self-addressed envelope back to the STOTT PILATES Education Department (you are responsible for the postage for this package) RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROCTOR: Receiving the STOTT PILATES Examination package Supervising the examination process (date, time, and location to be agreed upon by the Proctor and Student) Sealing the return envelope (with completed written exam and receipt of payment enclosed) and signing the back portion of the sealed envelope to ensure authenticity VIDEO EXAM PROCEDURE The purpose of the practical examination is to observe the student as they lead a subject through a workout. The subject should be another STOTT PILATES student that has taken course covering the same level and repertoire covered by the exam. The videotaped workout will be 1 hour in length for the Mat exam, 1-1/2 hours for the Mat & Reformer exam, and 2 hours for the Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair & Barrels exam. TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The camera should be positioned to observe a side view of the subject s body (the entire length), allowing for an additional 3 feet on either end to ensure enough room to move about. Be sure to keep the view close enough so that details in the subject s movement and the interaction between the student and the subject can still be seen. Test the video equipment and sound level and make sure that it records properly and that your voice can be heard on the tape. The student being examined should be facing the camera (instructing on the far side of their subject to avoid obstructing the view. Camera adjustments should be performed at natural breaks in the examination process (i.e. between the postural analysis and mat workout or between the mat workout and reformer workout).

26 The tape should NOT be stopped at any other point during the practical component of the examination. The subject s workout should be continuous. Videotape must be sent in either VHS NTSC or VHS PAL formats. We do NOT accept any other format for practical examination submission. CONDUCTING THE EXAM: The student should state their name and the name of their test subject (the test subject must be familiar with the required repertoire associated with your exam). The student is allotted five to ten minutes to conduct a postural analysis of the subject verbalizing out loud what is observed in the lateral, anterior, and posterior view of the subject. The student must state the focus of the workout and how he/she will tailor the workout to address this focus. The student takes their subject through the Basic Principles for five to ten minutes, in proper sequence, using clear imagery and movement cues to help the subject properly achieve biomechanical body awareness. They must clearly explain why each of the principles is important. The number of exercises listed after each type of exam below is the attached minimum requirement. More exercises can be included where time allows. Note: an exercise with variations only counts as one exercise. For example, if Footwork positions 1, 2 and 5 are shown it counts as one exercise, not three. Also, advanced versions of exercises that are only slightly different from the intermediate (eg, Short Spine) would not count as meeting the minimum requirement of advanced exercises, but may certainly be included. MATWORK EXAM Following the postural analysis and Basic Principles the student guides their subject through a workout for the remaining 40 to 50 minutes. The student takes their subject through a workout that combines Essential and Intermediate level exercises. For Level 2 certification, Advanced level exercises should also be incorporated (person chosen as subject should be capable of doing required exercises safely). The time allotted for the workout portion of the exam will not allow for the completion of all exercises in the Matwork repertoire. The student must ensure that the exercises chosen represent a well-rounded workout that addresses all aspects of movement (i.e. flexion, extension, rotation, etc.) and cover the appropriate amounts of essential, intermediate or advanced exercises, while being appropriate to the person they are working out.
