1 Monthly Update: February 2018 Executive Director: John Small Interim Office Manager: Sharie Bekaert Notes: Our policy for class changes/cancellations due to weather related conditions: If the Wellness Center is open, there will be classes as scheduled. The class offered may change due to availability of the instructor. In extreme cases, the Wellness Center may close due to weather. We will post it on Facebook and alert local radio stations, and we will send an if we are able. Please call in, check your , watch Facebook, or listen to the radio for weather related announcements and closing information. All 5 gymnasiums will be closed on February 10 th -11 th for a wrestling meet. Feb 23 rd, 24 th and 25 th we will be having a soccer tournament in the Park and Rec gymnasium. Join us on Wednesday Feb 7 th for Wednesday Wellness for at 12:15pm, Dr. Evelio Garcia, Interventional Cardiologist at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System will be speaking on heart health. 2 Biggest loser is off to a great start. After 4 weeks, our participants have lost a total of 1,239 pounds! We have 192 big losers that are competing in 3 divisions. Remember to keep weighing in every Friday to be eligible for our weekly drawings. For complete results, go to Racquetball League will start the week of Feb. 5 th Racquetball players, please schedule a court time every time you play. Courts are getting busier and just showing up to play may not guarantee an open court. FREE youth (17 & under) racquetball lessons. Every Wednesday, starting February 21 st through March 28 th, 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM. Learn the basic rules and shots to be competitive in everything from leisure play to leagues and tournaments. Additional Pickleball Playing Times! Thursday Evenings 6-8pm, we will have two courts for open pickleball play. One court will open for less experienced players and one court for more advanced players. Just show up and have a great time! Want to learn how to play pickleball, contact Dave Greenman and he will be happy to teach you the basics. Reminder! Please be courteous and do not slam or drop your weights in the weight rooms. Not only does it disturb other members, it is also very hard on our equipment. There is a difference between having to set weights down forcefully and dropping the weights for show. Also keep in mind, if you are using head phones or ear buds, you may not notice how loud you are with the weights. Just be aware of and courteous to those around you. Thank you! Parents: Children under 8 th grade are only allowed on the 2 nd floor if they are walking the track within arm s reach of you. Children are not permitted in the free weights area, acceleration room, group fitness rooms, or the Cybex area under any circumstances. Please review our Youth Guidelines or ask a staff member if you have questions Our primary concern is safety Our Child Watch room is open 8am-2pm Monday-Friday, 4-8pm Monday-Thursday, and 8-11am Saturdays for your convenience ($3/hour per child) If you have questions about the Fitness Department or any of these programs, contact Dave Greenman at Thanks! Aquatics Department Updates: Jodi Hemiller (jhemiller@watertownsd.us) We ve added an Aqua Barre Class the first Saturday of each month from 9:15-10:15am

3 Low-impact workout to strengthen and elongate muscles Small isolated movements, repetitive weights and sections of quick cardio to boost your heart rate You ll be challenged while working against the water s resistance and all workouts are followed by a much need deep stretch. This class is suitable for all physical levels. We also have Aqua Barre Friday s at 9am and Alternating Thursday evenings Scuba Certification: February 23-25, Mick s Scuba will be hosting a scuba course, complete with classroom and pool instruction that leads to international P.A.D.I certification upon completion of four open water dives. All necessary equipment is furnished during pool sessions. If interested in this course, please call Mick s Scuba to register in and get your manual prior to course. Basic swimming skills are needed or duane@micksscuba.com Fee: $200 member / $225 non-member (fee does not include tax) Swim Meet: February 16 th -17 th -18 th Pool will be closed Friday evening 4-10pm, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Sorry for the inconvenience! The LATI students will be using a portion of the pool during adult lap swim on the Jan 31 st, Feb 2 nd, Feb 5 th and Feb 7 th. When the Watertown School District has a scheduled early dismissal or a NO school day, the Prairie Lakes Wellness Center will have an additional open swim session from 1-3pm. Children 3 rd grade and younger must be supervised by an adult, children in 4 th grade and older may swim independently. Upcoming dates: February 19 th February 28 th -March 2 nd March 8 th March 14 th -16 th March 30 th Swim at your Own Risk: This time is for lap swimmers 18 years and older to swim in the 3- lane leisure pool only. 4 Taking a group fitness class at Prairie Lakes Wellness Center is a great way to get out of a fitness rut, break through plateaus or just get started with a new fitness routine. Here are just a few reasons you should consider a group fitness class at PLWC with our trained instructors Efficient and Fast-Paced Group Fitness Classes tend to feel as if they go by quickly. By changing up the pace, routine and exercises, you ll be so focused on following the instructor; you ll find yourself forgetting to watch the clock. Social Made up of similarly motivated individuals, group fitness classes can be a great way to bond with others over your common goals and experiences. Motivating The group experience can help motivate people to work harder. In addition to being lead and challenged by the instructor, working with others offers an additional level of competition and camaraderie. Challenging Being motivated to keep pace with the group means that you ll be challenged to work harder. Working out on our own is great, but most of us tend not to work as hard as we can when we re alone. Exercising with others and having a leader guide the group provides a boost to the workout, making us work harder and push ourselves more. Educational A good class will not only challenge and motivate, it will teach you new moves and show you how to do them properly. Trying something different is a great way to exercise your mind and your body. Safety When beginning a new or different fitness routine, it s especially important that you do so in a safe manner. The right instructor will be able to help explain what you re doing, how to do it and what you should be feeling. Instructors are able to model exercises and use cues to help ensure the safe execution of their routines. Be sure to ask questions or as for alternative exercises if you need additional assistance. You Can Go at Your Own Pace An experienced group fitness instructor will be able to offer modifications that allow for different fitness levels among the participants. Most classes will offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced exercise options. If you re concerned, be sure to show up a few minutes prior to class and chat with the instructor and ask for advice. Developing a relationship with your instructor is key to finding the workout that will challenge you in a safe manner.

5 Mind/Body classes have become an important part of life for millions of people around the world. They are included in many wellness and fitness programs for people of all ages. Here are a few good reasons to join us for our mind/body classes STRESS RELIEF Mind/Body classes reduce the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging relaxation, they help to lower the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Related benefits include lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improving digestion and boosting the immune system. PAIN RELIEF Studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation, or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain. BETTER BREATHING Mind/Body classes teach people to take slower, deeper breaths. This helps to improve lung function, trigger the body s relaxation response and increase the amount of oxygen available to the body. FLEXIBILITY Yoga helps to improve flexibility and mobility, increasing range of motion and reducing aches and pains. Many people can t touch their toes during their first class. Over time, ligaments, tendons and muscles lengthen, making more poses possible. INCREASED STRENGTH Yoga asanas (postures) use every muscle of the body, helping to increase strength from head to toe! IMPROVED CIRCULATION As a result of various poses, yoga and Pilates move oxygenated blood to the body s cells more efficiently. FOCUS ON THE PRESENT Mind/Body classes help us to become more aware and to help create mind body awareness. It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time and memory. BOOM MIND~ Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15am in the Mind/Body Room This 30 minute basic floor mind/body class fuses Pilates, yoga and athletic stretching in a way that makes these disciplines accessible to participants of multiple skill levels. Flexibility and posture issues are concerns of Boomer and older adult participants, so this class specifically focuses on improving overall range of motion and strength, balance, and core stability. It also seeks to improve mind/body awareness and stress reduction through specialized breathing techniques and dedicated relaxation segment.
