The Circulatory System of a Sparrow By Sydney Breitbach
Parts of the System # PART FUNCTION 1 Venae Cavae Large vein that carries deoxygenated blood into the heart. It is located on the left side of the sparrow s heart. 2 Pulmonary arteries the artery carrying blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs for oxygenation. It is located near the aorta. 3 Systemic arch/aorta The aorta that carries oxygenated blood to the whole body except to the lungs. It is located at the top of the heart. 4 Carotid artery The Carotids deliver blood to the brain and the head. It is located directly on top of the heart. 5 Left & right atrium 6 Left & right ventricle The blood enters the heart through the two atriums. They are the smaller of the four chambers in the heart. The right ventricle is responsible for pumping oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs. The left does the opposite and pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. They are the larger two chambers of the sparrow s heart.
Parts of the System Part 2 Coeliac: It delivers blood to the sparrows organs and tissues in the stomach area. It is the first branch of the aorta to pump blood to the bird s body. Renal: It delivers blood to the kidneys. There are three different renals in three different places. They are all in a line underneath the Coeliac with the Femoral in the middle. Femorals: There are two femorals that stretch in two opposite directions to each of the birds legs. From the picture, they are the longest arteries that reach from the heart. Caudal: The caudal brings blood from the heart to the tail, which explains its position at the very end of the aorta.
Does a sparrow have a closed or open circulatory system?
Can the sparrow regulate its internal body temperature? Yes, in fact, they can. Unlike humans and some other animals, they don't sweat. So then how do they regulate their body temperature? They are able to do this because their veins and arteries are so close to each other. For example, when it's cold outside, the heat from the blood heats the cold blood going the other way in the body and vice versa. So the blood stays at a good, cool temperature at all times.
How are gases exchanged Gases are transported through the avian circulatory system. It consists of the heart and vessels that bring oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, heat and waste throughout the body. Birds have big hearts relative to their body size compared to mammals. and transported?
How are waste products exchanged and transported? Just like gases, waste products are transported through the avian circulatory system. They are removed from the blood by the kidneys, become acid and then go to the cloaca. The cloaca holds the waste until it is released from the body. The process goes from the beak, to the esophagus, to the stomach, to the intestines and then onto the cloaca.
What are the structural adaptations which allow the Sparrow to live in it s environment? 1. They are usually a dark and plum color to hide from predators in the marshes that they usually inhabit. 2. They have an extra bone in their beak to help stiffen the tongue when they hold seeds. 3. They have a short beak which helps with breaking and eating seeds.
Adaptations to the system that benefit the sparrow s niche? 1. Their hearts are large in comparison to their bodies which helps them fly fast and far. 2. They have small organs and vessels which helps them stay in the air when they are flying. 3. They can regulate their own body temperature, which helps them whenever they are on cold branches, flying in the winter, or in extreme heat.
