3 Hello and welcome to the Whole Green Heart community...where you ll be inspired to embrace healthy, herbal living so that you can enhance your life. I m Michelle (Fike) Wolf, and I m so excited that you ve decided to take the initial steps toward integrating herbs into your daily life. I've lived with them for over 20 years. Intimately. Carefully. Lovingly. I've grown, harvested, wildcrafted and tried (in food or medicine) literally hundreds of herbs throughout my lifetime and years in the herbal industry. Weeds, native wild plants, garden ornamentals, and exotic cultivated herbs - they all have much to contribute to our well-being, wholeness and natural health, and they are some of my dearest friends. Within this report, I ve included the 10 Ways to Use Herbs 10 Herbs for Each Use checklist. It explores ten common uses for herbs and the top ten herbs you can utilize for each. It s a great quick reference guide to some common herbs for common health issues. These are herbs I know and use in my own family and business. I recommend that you print the checklist and have it handy as you ll want to come back to it again and again! You'll find some herbs repeated often. Others are unique to only one or two key uses. I encourage you to use this checklist to start (or deepen) your inquiry and curiosity about the plant world. What jumps out at you? What calls your attention? What plant(s) seem to show themselves to you, outdoors or in the media, repeatedly? Find them on this checklist and start getting familiar with some of these incredible plants! 5 MY STORY Let me start by telling you a little bit about my story and where my Top Ten Herb Checklist comes from. In 1992, I was a graduate student in environmental studies. It's pretty easy to describe me back then - energetic, young, and pissed right off! Course work and academic life had gotten the better of me, left me hankering for something positive, something hopeful. I needed a glimpse into another world, where the complex global problems I'd spent the last years saturated in and despairing about could be seen from another vantage point. And where my compassion for humanity could be rekindled. I was filled with youthful anger about the state of the world and I didn't want to start drowning in that. I needed one heck of a happy summer! Michelle in Lytton, BC in 1992 where she first discovered the world of herbs and wild plants So, I followed an intuitive hunch, and left Toronto for my home province of British Columbia where I spent the next four months apprenticing at a wild, off-grid, organic herb and veggie farm. It was nestled high in the mountains above the Fraser River, surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest and the wild outdoors. The sun was hot, the work was difficult, and the hours were long. Black bears were our only close neighbours, and the creek water we drank gave me intestinal troubles (nice way of saying I had the runs) for over a month (that's a really long time!). However, it didn t matter, because I loved it there! The rhythm of life on that pristine mountain soothed my rough edges. That lifestyle offered a practical solution to many of the problems that were threatening the earth's ecosystems, problems that had begun keeping me up at night. There was no noise there except for the sounds of the birds and nature, no pollution, no lights at night except for our candles and the starlight. I slept in a converted candle-making shed, alone on the edge of the large garden, wildlife stirring around me every night. There was no media or radio (and this was before the internet and cell phones). It was located 40 minutes on a rough dirt road carved into the side of the mountain. It led to the three-car ferry that 5
6 could take us across the river to a tiny town, although some days the ferry didn't run at all. So, there were no trips to town for junk food or entertainment or mindless shopping either (I left the farm only six times in four months). It was a heady summer, a totally different life. It pushed me mentally and physically, and made me strong and beautiful. When I returned to Toronto I was a new person, and I finished my degree with optimism in my heart. The summer of 1992 was about that transformational experience, but it was also about herbs. The farm owners had a small sideline herbal business along with their vegetables and garlic braids, and I fell in love with everything herbal! I became voracious for herbal knowledge. I asked hundred of questions, read every herb book in their library, picked hundreds of bunches of herbs for their business and harvested extra herbs on my days off for my own use, and to take back to Toronto. That autumn, I made up a couple dozen recycled bottles with handmade labels, and filled them with some tea blends, bath grains, cooking herb mixes and a few herbal vinegars. All made with herbs I had dried at the farm. I didn't know it then, but this was the start of a business I would continue, develop and grow for the next 20 years! I moved to Nova Scotia in 1996 in order to expand the business and Pumpkin Moon Farm went on to become one of the largest herbal products companies in the Maritimes, morphing and growing as I grew my gardens, my expertise and my business knowledge. By the time I sold Pumpkin Moon in the spring of 2013, I had made a success of my business both financially and from a lifestyle perspective. I employed four other women and I mostly worked from home. I had had a busy internship program and offered workshops to share my herbal information. My profit margin was up around 43% (that's very good in this sector!), and I was also leading workplace education training on business best-practises for other agricultural, food and craft-based business owners. But my production studio wasn't the only place, or even the most important place, where product development and tasting/testing were going on. For those 20+ years, my own kitchen and my own family's health care were the testing grounds on which I built my business. How did it taste? How did 6
7 it work? How did it smell? How did it feel? How well did it keep? Each of these questions were first asked and answered in my own kitchen and bathroom, and that is why I founded Whole Green Heart. People just like you love home-based, practical, real, tried-and-true information. They are turning to nature more and more for their health and wellbeing, and want to deepen that connection, understand it more, and allow it to percolate up into their cells in more ways that are meaningful. I founded Whole Green Heart on my 20+ years of living intimately with nature and plants, knowing what products my customers use and love the most, knowing their health concerns and lifestyle pressures. It s based on having used herbs and plant-based products in every area of my life - from my laundry to my beauty routines to my children's health care to my interior design - for over two decades. Moreover, it was born out of my love of relationship with other like-minded people who want to connect their home and their health to nature, to the outdoors, and to ancient and modern ways of living gently on the earth.
