2 WE HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US HOW RESILIENT IS YOUR LIBRARY? Member libraries are invited to the Annual Meeting and Conference of the Southern Tier Library System. This year s event will take place on Tuesday, October 9, from 2:00 pm to 7:45 pm at the Watson Homestead Conference & Retreat Center. An official agenda has been provided with this mailing. What does it mean to be a resilient library? Since 1958, we as a library system have undergone many changes. The face of librarianship in 2018 is much different than 60 year ago. Fortunately, our professional values have remained the same, but our practices, policies and strategies have all transformed to keep pace with a very different world. Resilience is how we tap into our knowledge, skills and creativity to provide what our communities need most. This year s conference will focus on conversations that bring librarians, trustees and professionals together to think about how we empower libraries to best serve all community members in a rapidly changing world. Rural communities are not immune to real life challenges. Current events and research both demonstrate that now is the time to talk, plan and implement proactive responses. Our hope is that each conference session will shed light on practical solutions, and enable our libraries to think creatively about how we take on difficult situations. Workshops will not provide answers to all questions, but rather serve as a starting point for Preparing Resilient Libraries. We hope you will join us to strengthen the already amazing library membership we have developed and celebrate accomplishments of this past year. Warmest Regards, Brian M. Hildreth, STLS Executive Director ANNUAL DINNER KEYNOTE - LAUREN COMITO Pull Your Shelf Together: Community Organizing in Libraries Natural disasters! Hackers! Poverty! Crumbling infrastructure! It's easy for library people to feel the fatigue of endless emergencies and social issues. How do we keep callousness and paralysis from creeping into our work and our policies? By not doing it alone. In her talk, Lauren will tell the positive tale of how, no matter how big the ill, working with an organized community for positive change brings new life to the library.

3 CONFERENCE PROGRAM SESSION I 2:00 to 3:15 pm CHECKING IN WITH YOUR COMMUNITY: LIBRARY RESPONSES TO COMMUNITY DISRUPTION No effective library is an island apart from the conditions in the community it serves. Join Urban Libraries Unite co-founder Lauren Comito to explore strategies libraries employ to develop positive responses to community challenges. From hurricanes to hungry kids, librarians can serve a vital role in creating community resilience. This workshop will dig into specific actions libraries can take to respond. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANNING Is your organization prepared to handle an emergency? Do you know what to do in case of a natural disaster or emergency situation? Tim Marshall, Director of the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services, will lead an introductory program on the basics of preparing for emergencies. He will also introduce national, state, and local resources available to aid in emergency planning and recovery.

4 CONFERENCE PROGRAM SESSION II 3:30 to 4:45 pm PERSONAL SAFETY ROUNDTABLE When the membership gathered for a full day presentation on Library Safety and Security, we heard from so many librarians that they needed to know how other libraries handle personal safety. How do you increase feelings of safety opening up or closing down the library? Staffing alone? Dealing with the not-really-doing-anything-wrong-butnonetheless-creepy patron? Experienced facilitator Joy Williams, from the Institute for Human Services, will help surface best practices and strategies from your broad diversity of experiences. *This session should be attended by practitioners. OPERATIONAL PLANNING FOR DISASTER & RECOVERY In this session, STLS Assistant Director - IT, Ken Behn, and STLS IT Specialist, Pat Beeman, will discuss how to make a plan for when disaster strikes and for recovering afterwards. In particular, this session will focus on issues related to IT. This session will complement some of the topics discussed by Tim Marshall in the Emergency Preparedness Planning session.
