4 Minutes of our last meeting Thursday 17 November 2016 The Minutes from the last meeting on 17 November 2016 were agreed as being correct, apart from on Page 13, which should have read: Sian Williams said that she was a clinical nurse specialist in palliative care. Warmth Matters Presentation from Claire Dawson A warm home is important for your health In the winter it s very important to keep yourself and your home warm. Being cold can be bad for your health, especially if you have existing medical conditions such as asthma, colds/flu and are less mobile. 5 Winter Warmth Presentation from Claire Dawson How to keep warm on a budget Keep the heat in Use draft excluders on doors (a blanket could be used for this), foil to boost the heat from your radiators, close curtains and doors, and seal your windows using things like bubble wrap to keep drafts out. Get cosy in bed Use blankets, thick socks and Hot water bottles to stay warm in bed South West Surrey Local Valuing People Group - January 2017 Minutes Page 5

6 Winter Warmth Presentation from Claire Dawson Body Warmers Hat Scarf Socks Gloves Layer up Exercise Drink plenty of hot drinks and have things like soup to keep your body warm Take Control Ask your energy company to register you for a Priority Service. If you have a problem with your gas, electric or heating you can get help quickly. Learn how to use a thermostat Switch things off that aren t been used e.g. lights Emergency Kit: Soup Drink Blanket List of contact numbers Tony Hall asked how do we know if products designed to keep people warm are safe. Claire said that it is important to always read the instructions and if you have a medical condition to check suitability. David Muir asked Claire if she uses Easy Read and suggested that she should contact Healthwatch. Claire said yes she does and she would make contact with them. 7 Winter Warmth Presentation from Claire Dawson Further information Easy Read Information: Please visit: The Warmth Matters Help and Advice Service. Thanks to funding from Scottish Power, Surrey Community Action is helping people living in fuel poverty across Surrey to access free information and advice to spend less on energy bills and keep their homes warm and healthy. The sessions help people to better understand their fuel bills and equip them with the skills to find the best deals. They are also able demonstrate cost-effective, practical solutions to keeping a house warm in a fun, engaging way. 8 Winter Warmth Presentation from Claire Dawson Further information Winter Wellness Toolkit The toolkit has been developed to support health, social care and local community professionals in providing advice and information about services in Surrey. This useful guide offers advice on keeping well, warm and safe in winter, as well as listing local and national sources of support. It will help staff to support clients and patients to take actions that are most likely to prevent any unnecessary emergency admissions this winter. 17 Agenda Items for 2013 Update from Sarah Linington Sarah asked the group what topics they would liked to be covered during the 2017 South West Valuing People Group Meetings. The suggestions were as follows: Advocacy Health Services Role of a MP Community Event preparation South West Surrey Local Valuing People Group - January 2017 Minutes Page 17

18 Police Survey Update from Sarah Linington Sarah Linington said that the hard copy Easy Read Surveys had now arrived. Surrey Police have now extended the deadline to 22 February 2017 and Sarah encouraged Group members to support as many people as possible to complete a survey. Sarah said that she had still not received an electronic version of the survey. However the Group suggested that Sarah could scan one of the hard copies and then this version to Group members. 19 Updates from Members Group Members told us their news County Care Community Skills Project Amy Thompkins said County Care has recently opened up another Community Skills Project located on Epsom. Group members told us their news Surrey Autism Partnership Board At the last Autism Partnership Board Meeting, there was a discussion about Autism Friendly Libraries. 20 Updates from Members Group Members told us their news Parity for Disability Rhythmic Collison Performance Alison Cooper said that students from Parity for Disability enjoyed a performance from Rhythmic Collision. Surrey Choices Group members told us their news Dexter James said that he is hoping to attend all the Valuing People Groups in Surrey. Dexter said that his main role in Surrey Choices is to oversee the Customer Involvement Board Meetings. Surrey Choices currently has an interim management team. However Surrey Choices will be shortly interviewing for the permanent management positions. Dexter said he has enjoyed working with Sarah Linington to develop relationships between the different groups. South West Surrey Local Valuing People Group - January 2017 Minutes Page 20

21 Updates from Members Group Members told us their news Surrey County Council Surrey Disability Network Facebook Page Surrey County Council has recently set up a Facebook page Surrey Disability Network - for anyone living in Surrey with a disability, learning disability, autism or a mental health issue, as well as their family and others who provide care. Our facebook page includes news, events, local groups and initiatives related to disability, learning disability, autism and mental health in Surrey and nationally. We hope this page will help support and encourage conversation, idea sharing and the promotion of local events and groups to raise awareness of and access to the wide network of resources and support available across the county.
