1 Tuesday, August 31 st Wednesday, September 1 st & 15 th Wednesdays, September 1 st, 15 th, 22 nd and 29 th SEPTEMBER 2010 Upcoming Events & Dates to Remember 10:30-12noon, Hinds Feet Farm hosts Carl McIntyre and Donna Scott of Donna Scott Productions as we view the internationally acclaimed movie, Aphasia The Movie, This is an empowering story about Carl, a Charlotte actor, whom had a stroke and now lives with aphasia. An inspirational movie!!! 9-11am, The Family and Caregiver Support Group formally meets themselves as caregivers to nurture themselves through their community support. Colleen Burgess, Ed.D., nurse practitioner and a mother of one of HFF s members is a primary facilitator with other caregivers. 12noon-1:30pm, Community Connection, Hinds Feet Farm is excited to have partnered with the Y of Lake Norman, Cornelius, NC in a pioneering effort by both organizations as we seek to improve the health and wellness of people living with brain injury through a proactive, community health partnership. Thursday, September 9 th Thursday, September 16 th Monday, September 20 th Thursday, September 23 rd To be scheduled 11:30-12:30pm, Community Connection, Yoga with Meg Community Yoga, Cornelius, NC, and by Patti The Bindu, Cornelius, NC We will alternate our practice each week at these studios. 10:30-12noon, Community Connection, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Charlotte, as HFF s community provides community service volunteerism to those in need. 11:45am-12:45pm, Community Connection, Toastmasters at the Lake!, Moorseville, NC, Hinds' Feet Farm has partnered with this Toastmaster s club to assist members in improving public speaking/communication. We expand our relationship in the fall with Toastmaster s visiting us at HFF as well. 1-2pm, Tricia Lytle, Chaplin, Presbyterian Hospital-, will be facilitating the group, Honoring our Spirituality: A Common Ground. The members requested focus will be: Spirituality 101: Back to the Basics. 10am-1:30pm, HFF hosts CPCC s and Project STAR s Community Living Class, for a day at the Farm and grilling! The Community Livings Class is a college level course specifically designed to assist persons living with brain injury to access the greater Charlotte community through integration and inclusion. Welcome to HFF! Community Connections to Classroom Central, and opportunity to host 5 th grade students from the Community School of Davidson, Davidson, NC

2 Mondays, SEPTEMBER 2010 Hinds Feet Farm daily program offers numerous opportunities based on the Member Council, through ongoing needs assessments, program evaluations, and as the program matures. As a result, the daily program schedule is subject to minor variations based on programming opportunities. Please attend Hinds Feet Farm s Community Meeting or contact program staff for the latest developments. (9:00 to 10:00 am) Early Morning Personal Goals (V): Each of us in the Hinds Feet Farm community has personal goals we are striving to achieve, whether that is through a Person Centered Plan or our own goals. In this group, we will review our goals, examine our efforts and invite our community to assist us in supporting each step along the way. or Farm Chores (V): Designed to connect with the roots of Americana in an experiential group of sharing the chores as we care for Hinds Feet Farm. Members, student interns, volunteers, staff and all of the community can lend a hand in this interactive honest days work. (10:00 to 12:00noon) Mid Morning Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program (R): Hinds' Feet Farm s Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program led by our own Suess Fraser, Day Program Director and Therapeutic Riding Instructor begins again as we begin reintroduce classes that include: horse anatomy, grooming, horse behavior and body language, and horse/rider safety, and grooming the horses. Through October and November, we will work the horses from the ground and get back in the saddle in the arena and on our riding trails. (12:00 to 1pm), Lunch Topic of the Day or Activity Choice: During the lunch hour, we will explore a thought provoking topic presented by the community, or a lunch time activity will engage our time together. (1:00 to 2:00 pm), Early Afternoon Community Connections (F): Community integration and inclusion is a key component of Hinds Feet Farm, and this group will investigate our connections into the community, whether that be movies, restaurants, recreation, shopping, etc. We will also explore our local public transportation system, specifically the bus and light rail system in and around Charlotte. As we learn more, we will plan more Community Connections to places in the community. (11:30 to 12:30pm), Late Morning Gentle Yoga (R): Hinds' Feet Farm loves yoga!...as it balances member s health and wellness post injury. 4 Wednesdays, SEPTEMBER 2010 (9:00 to 10:00 am) Early Morning Art Workshops (C): Creativity stimulates our energy and passions, and through several art workshops lead by the dynamic team of Ruhi Brelvi, a UNCC Art Major, and Shari Crouse, artist and a mother of one of our members, we will explore building wind chimes, throwing clay, designing mosaic tiles, and creating outdoor sculptures for our 36 acre property. (10:00 to 11:00am) Mid Morning Getting Better and Better After Brain Injury (E): In this mental health wellness group focusing on the ongoing journey of recovery, Katie Johnston, our UNCC Counseling intern will be working through recent publications by Jeffrey S. Kreutzer, Ph.D. and Stephanie Kolakowsky-Hayner, Ph.D., and that are available through our friends at Lash & Associates Publishing/Training, Inc., 11:00 to 11:30pm Lunch Topic of the Day or Activity Choice: During the lunch hour, we will explore a thought provoking topic presented by the community, or a lunch time activity will engage our time together. (11:30 to 1:30pm) Afternoon Hinds Feet the Y of Lake Norman, Cornelius, NC (R): Hinds Feet Farm is excited to have partnered with the Y of Lake Norman ( in a pioneering effort by both organizations as we seek to improve the health and wellness of people living with brain injury through a proactive, community health partnership through group exercise, and individual workout programs. Bobby DesPain, Davidson College Pre-Med/Biology Major, joins us for his senior year.

Members, student interns, volunteers, staff and all of the community can lend a hand in this interactive honest days work. (10:00-11:00), Late Morning Hidden Talents (COG): We ve all got hidden talents, and through sharing our gifts we learn more about each other as a community. Through a montage of personal talents, we ll all take a turn at shining a bit brighter! (11:00 to 12:00 noon), Late Morning Structure Games (R): We have all heard, When the work is done, you can play! So, after our morning Farm Chores, we ll hang out and enjoy a quick game of cards, board games or our favorite, Wii Bowling. (12:00 to 1:00pm), Topic of the Day or Activity Choice: During the lunch hour, we will explore a thought provoking topic presented by the community, or a lunch time activity will engage our time together. (1:00 to 2:00pm), Fitness Now and Everyone Can Dance (R): Susan Li, Davidson College senior Pre-Med/Biology Major, will continue off from the Fall and Spring Semester last year, to teach us new, low-impact, cardio exercises and dance movements to keeps limber and active. Come out and join us and strut your stuff!

6 SEPTEMBER 2010 Hinds Feet Farms Community of Staff, Volunteers and Student Interns. Jenny Bohr, is a University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Master s in Social Work student intern, whom will be with us for a 9 month internship through May Welcome! Patti Boug is a certified yoga The Bindu, Cornelius, NC Born and raised in Canada, she has lived and taught yoga in Canada, Europe and the U.S. She loves sharing yoga with us. Ruhi Brelvi, a University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Art Major, has joined us to blend her love of art and her interest in the healing profession, as she hope to combined these interests in a future career. Will DeGrauw, Hinds Feet Farm Day Program Director, is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Case Manager, and Brain Injury Specialist. He has practiced in the rehabilitation field for twenty years specializing in community-based, brain injury rehabilitation and will be facilitating various workshops at Hinds Feet Farm. Bobby DesPain, a Davidson College senior, Pre-Med/Biology Major, will continue from the Fall and Spring Semesters last year, and joins at the Y, and will lead his own fitness classes at Hinds Feet Farm. Suess Fraser, is a Day Program Coordinator with Hinds Feet Farm since August 2010, and has two Master s degrees (Audiology and School Counseling) and is also a Therapeutic Riding Instructor. Yeah Suess!!! Marty Foil, Hinds Feet Farm Executive Director is an enthusiastic champion for persons living with brain injury, especially through numerous state and national lobbying efforts on behalf of the greater brain injury community. Marty is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and a relentless advocate and fundraiser. Buzz Foster, is a University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Master s in Social Work major student intern, whom will be with us for a 9 month internship through May Katie Johnston, a University of North Carolina-Charlotte, Master s Degree in Counseling major, joins us for the fall 2010 semester for individual and group supportive counseling experiences with members. Susan Li, a Davidson College senior, Pre-Med/Biology Major, will continue from the Fall and Spring Semesters last year, to teach us new, low-impact, cardio exercises and dance movements. Tricia Lytle, Chaplain, Presbyterian Hospital, will visiting each month to conduct the spirituality group, Honoring our Spiritual Journey: A Common Ground. Jennifer Lowder, a former Hinds Feet Farm Program Coordinator and currently a Certified/Licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant, continues to support Hinds Feet Farm, as she pursues her Master s Degree in Health Administration through Duke University. Annie Seier, a former Hinds Feet Farm Program Coordinator and currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, continues to support Hinds Feet Farm as she develops her own private mental health practice through Southlake Counseling, Cornelius, NC. Meg Smeaton, is a yoga Community Yoga, Cornelius, NC, and has been with us since Meg is excited to teach us her wisdom in the practice of yoga. Christine Walls, Hinds Feet Farm Office Manager, joined us in 2010 and oversees our office, & accounts and receivables. She also has worked in the human service field and is currently a Guardian ad Litem.
