1 June 2013 Spring/Summer Newsletter Spring into Action Volume 1 Issue 2 We welcomed the new year with the opening of the latest addition to our office space at 1313 Border St. This expansion includes additional office space, a music room, two shredding and can crushing rooms, storage space and a large open space for our day program activities. We hope to develop the day program area into a space where individuals are free to socialize and participate in organized activities such as; video/board games, exercise programs, art therapy, movie days and karaoke. With this expansion, we are able to expand the shared Manager s office which will provide them increased space with additional workstations and computers. We thought it would be a good idea to come up with a creative name for the new addition as well as artwork or design ideas to brighten up the space. The Senior Management team took this challenge to the employees of Arcane and created a competition to see who could come up with the most creative name and/or design idea. Several ideas have been submitted by staff teams and individual staff members. The Senior Management team will announce the winners of the competition on June 14th at our monthly Manager s Meeting. Inside this issue: Bud, Spud & Steak 2 Welcome Barb 2 Art Therapy 3 Linda Turns 65 3 Upcoming Events 4 Broadening Horizons 5 Photo Reel 5 Strategic Planning Day Arcane Horizon s Board of Directors and Senior Management Team spent a day together with Rhonda Lorch; a consultant who provides training and facilitation services to not-for-profit organizations. Rhonda led our group through discussions that focused on our mission, vision and values statement, the current challenges we face, the opportunities we have as an organization and our strategic priorities. Collaboratively, we discussed where the organization stands today, and where we would like to head in the future. The day concluded with positive reports on how the discussions we had as a team were empowering, energizing and inspiring. Overall, the exercise was a great step in the right direction for the agency. Important Dates: MB Marathon: June 16/2013 Summer Camps with Dave Duch: Beginning June 18/2013 AGM: Sept.16/2013 Annual Picnic: TBA SelFISH Fundraiser August 10/2013
2 10th Annual Bud, Spud & Steak Elvis is in the building!! Arcane held their 10th Annual Bud, Spud & Steak on May 23rd. With tickets nearly sold out, and not an open seat in the house, this year s event was definitely an accomplishment. Elvis took the stage around 8pm and stole the hearts of everyone in the crowd. What a great way to celebrate 10 years of successful fundraisers. A huge thank you goes out to all who participated in the planning and preparation of the event!! Welcome Barb!! We would like to welcome Barb, our newest member of the Arcane Horizon family. Barb has moved into the home at 696 McLeod. Barb quickly became a perfect fit with the two other roommates in the home. They have developed great friendships and plan to have a fun filled summer together! Barb appears to be quite pleased with her new home and all that Arcane has to offer. Page 2
3 Art Therapy Arcane Horizon has received approval for a grant from the Manitoba Marathon Foundation for an Art Therapy program. Arcane has contracted Tanis Dick & Associates Art Therapy and Counseling Services Ltd. to lead this program. The program will begin in October 2013 and will follow a drop in style where the individuals will have to sign up a week in advance if they choose to participate. The individuals will work with a variety of mediums such as clay, paints, cutting & pasting. We will display the art work in the Arcane Day Program space and host an art show at the end of the session for all to attend and share their creations. On May 10th all Managers and members of the Senior Management team took part in a hour long Art Therapy session with Art Therapist Tanis Dick. This allowed everyone to experience Art Therapy and provided them with a glimpse of what the individuals will gain from the program. Linda turns 65!! Linda celebrated her 65th birthday with friends and family this spring. To celebrate this momentous day, a classy and stylish event was organized by Linda s loved ones which was held at the Victoria Inn. Along with a few speeches made in Linda s honor, she enjoyed a delicious meal, opening presents and ending the evening with birthday cake. Linda, you are a thoughtful, loving woman whom I ve had the privilege of getting to know. We have stood by each other through the good as well as difficult, challenging times. The significance of this day is beyond just your birthday. It is a celebration of someone that is loved and greatly admired for her strength and tenacity! Happy 65 th Birthday Linda. Please raise your glasses to Linda, to friendship and to birthdays, may you have many more. To LINDA! Written with love by Kristin Lepischak Volume 1 Issue 2 Page 3
