Rock Canyon Swim Lake Pueblo State Park YOUR GUIDE TO RECRUITMENT AND FUNDRAISING SUCCESS! 2018 TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE
Welcome Team Captain! We are delighted that you have committed to be your team s captain for the 2018 Southern Colorado Walk to End Alzheimer s! Thank you for taking the first step toward making our event a success. This guide will provide the tools you need to make your team s experience fun, successful and rewarding. As team captain, you are a powerful force in the fight to end Alzheimer s Disease. A Team Captain s job is to motivate and encourage others to join your team, promote the Walk and encourage your team with their fundraising efforts. Every person you recruit and every dollar that your team raises brings us another step closer to a world without Alzheimer s disease. Since 1989, we ve been walking to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer s, the nation s sixth leading cause of death. The success of the Walk relies on teams just like yours teams made up of friends, family, co-workers and neighbors, all united to end this devastating disease. You can start with one , one phone call, or one letter asking friends and family to join you. You will be amazed how many people are touched by this impartial disease, and how willing they will be to join you! The following pages contain some ideas intended to stir your creative juices! Please contact us if we can be of any assistance! Your Pueblo Staff Team: Felicia Duff, Development Coordinator, fduff@alz.org, x 302 Ann Carter, Regional Director, acarter@alz.org, x 300 Jill Suazo, Administrative Assistant, jsuazo@alz.org, x 304 Register your team today at: act.alz.org/soco2018 2
Why Do We Fundraise? Funds raised through the Walk to End Alzheimer s support all of the programs and services we offer for those individuals facing Alzheimer s disease, as well as programs and services for their families and care partners. In addition, Walk funds support advocacy for better care, and research towards treatments and ultimately a cure. The Alzheimer s Association core programs and services include: 24/7 Multilingual Helpline Monthly Support Groups Educational Classes Care Consultations Research Medic Alert and Safe Return Early Stage Services 2018 Colorado Walk to End Alzheimer s Locations Boulder Saturday August 11, 2018 University of Colorado Business Field Colorado Springs Saturday September 15, 2018 America the Beautiful Park Denver Saturday September 15, 2018 Denver City Park Tri-County Saturday September 8, 2018 Fort Morgan City Park Western Slope Saturday September 22, 2018 Long Family Memorial Park Greeley Saturday September 29, 2018 Bittersweet Park Larimer County Saturday September 22, 2018 Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra Pueblo Saturday September 8, 2018 Rock Canyon Swim Lake Pueblo State Park Steamboat Springs Saturday August 25, 2018 Casey s Pond Sterling Saturday August 25, 2018 Columbine Park Southwest Colorado/ Cortez Saturday September 15, 2018 Cortez City Park 3
Where to Start? Take some time to learn about the online tools you have available. If you are familiar with the tools, it will be easier for you to encourage your teammates to use them. The easier it is for someone to give you money, the more fundraising success you will have! Your Participant Center and your team page can be found by accessing the Walk to End Alzheimer s Southern Colorado at: act.alz.org/soco2018 Each registered participant will have a Participant Center Page. From this page you can build a personalized fundraising web page. You can send s, stay in contact with your team members, check your fundraising accomplishments, and access social media tools. This is a great way to reach out to coworkers, friends and family when seeking donations. Each team will also have a Team Page that can be used in the same manner. 1. Register your team. 2. Build your personal Participant and Team pages for your team. Make it personal, add photos and tell people why you have chosen to Walk. 3. Set personal and team fundraising goals. 4. Make the first donation. Donors are more motivated if they know you have also personally contributed to the cause. 5. Create a list of potential teammates, friends: family and those closest to you are a natural fit. Ask your acquaintances at work, church or the clubs that you participate in to join in the fight. 4
6. Fundraise! Conduct a letter writing campaign. This is the easiest and most effective way to raise money. Use social media to get the word out. Facebook and Twitter are great tools to let people know what you are doing. Remember, you can provide links directly to your participant/team page. Make it as easy as possible to support your team. Your donors can use a credit card on your participant/team page, that s pretty easy right? Pick checks up in person- while you are there, encourage them to join your team! Enclose a stamped envelope if you mail them a letter. Tailor your pitch to your donor. Tell them your story, and be prepared to listen to theirs. You are raising money that directly contributes to better the lives of those directly affected by Alzheimer s disease. It is something to be very proud of. Tell everyone! To a close friend you might ask, Will you please sponsor me? To someone with an Alzheimer s connection you might say, I m raising money for the Walk to End Alzheimer s so that we can make sure there are programs and services available to help people like my mom and your uncle. Will you please sponsor me? 7. Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up. Please call and send reminders. Let s face it we all lead busy lives- a gentle nudge is very often just what we need. 8. Say thank you. Always remember to thank those who donate to your team and especially to those who join your team and help you fundraise. Use your participant center to send thank you notes for every donation. Those two little words go a long way! We want every one involved to know that we appreciate the effort involved in creating a successful event. 9. Never Give Up! Don t be discouraged if you are turned down every now and then. Keep asking and keep the door open! 5
Family Team Fundraising Ideas Be sure to take advantage of all of our online tools that you can find on the Colorado Chapter s website at These tools provide team captains and walkers with fun, easy and effective ways to recruit walkers, register for the Walk and fundraise on line. Use these fundraising ideas to enhance your participation in Walk to End Alzheimer s and increase your team s fundraising efforts! Write Letters! When writing a letter requesting a Walk donation, be sure to make it personal. Tell your story, why do you participate in the Walk? The more vulnerable you are when sharing your experiences the more responsive your donors will be. Ask your friends and family, but don t forget to ask people that you work with professionally too. Consider sending letters to your hair stylist, dentist, accountant, lawyer, stock broker or even your kid s teachers. Widen the scope of your letter writing campaign by requesting the address books/ lists of your family and friends. If they would prefer not to share their lists, ask them to send the request on your behalf. You can send a different version of your letter to these lists, introducing yourself and making new connections, e.g., I am Mary s sister, and you may know that our father has Alzheimer s Use fundraising kits. Take advantage of fundraising kits such as pizza sales kits, or the multitude of candy, beauty products, gift wrap and jewelry sales kits to bolster your team total. Google fundraising ideas for a comprehensive list of opportunities. Organize your own fundraising event. There are no limits to what you can do. Some simple ideas might include a lemonade stand, garage sale, car wash or bake sale. These are great ways to get your children involved! 6
More fun ideas Game night anyone? If you are feeling a little more creative you might consider hosting a family/ friends game night. Charge an entry fee, or play $1 a hand, have prizes or maybe even have a final round where the winner has the opportunity to put their winnings toward their personal fundraising goal. The team still benefits, and hopefully you can recruit friends or family not already on your team! Love to cook? If you are a really great cook, host a dinner and charge participants to attend. Host a backyard garden party. If you have a talent, incorporate it into the event. Are you a golf enthusiast? Arrange a round of golf for the cause. Do you teach Aerobics, Zumba or another fitness class? Hold a class; charge $5 per person with the proceeds going to the Walk. Birthdays...we all have one! Several people have reached their goal by asking friends and family that would normally give birthday gifts to write a check to the Alzheimer s Association in lieu of gifts. This feels really great to both parties! Friendly Competition. Host a ping pong, bridge or pool tournament. Entry fees and prizes are always a great way to entice people to participate Share your talent! If you have a skill or talent, chances are there are those who admire it and would like for you to share it. Don t be shy, step out of your comfort zone, it is for a great cause! Be sure to watch our website for Do It Yourself (DIY) events that are happening in your area. Go and support others in their fundraising efforts! Keep us in the loop when you are hosting an event. We would love to send a representative and advertise the event for you on our DIY page of the Walk website. 7
Walk to End Alzheimer's FAQ Q: Is there a minimum amount that needs to be raised to Walk? Is there a registration fee? A: No, there is no minimum to participate in the Walk, and there is no registration fee. However, this is a fundraising event and we are raising money for Alzheimer s research, programs, and services. We encourage every walker to set a personal goal of raising $200. Participants who raise a minimum of $100 will receive an official 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer s T-Shirt on Walk Day at Registration/ Check-In. Participants who raise $500 or more are eligible for our Champions and Grand Champions Club, becoming part of our Colorado Alzheimer s Olympic Champions Team! Q: How do I current/potential donors from my personal page? A: You can compose s in your Participant Center (look for the tab) and send them to potential donors. Manually enter your recipients or click Address Book Import to upload your Outlook, Yahoo or Netscape address book or CSV file. Create your own message or select one of the templates we ve started for you. Potential donors will receive an from you that leads them directly to the donation tool on your personal page. Q: How can I see who has donated to my team so I can thank my donors? A: To see your donations, log on to your participant page. You can see your donors and the amount donated in the green box labeled honor scroll. If you would like to send them an thank you, use the tab to access your tool. Q: How should I turn in donations? A: Donations can be mailed directly to the Alzheimer s Association at 4104 Outlook Blvd. Building B, Pueblo, CO Remember, never send cash in the mail. You can always turn in donations to the Alzheimer s office, but we do encourage participants to have a money order created for any cash donations you receive, or you may turn everything in the day of the Walk. If you turn your donations in prior to the Walk, they will be listed on your honor scroll. Q: What if my donors would like a receipt? A: When a donor gives online, they will receive an automatic thank you letter via e- mail that can be used as a receipt. All offline donations of $100 or more will receive a thank you letter from the Alzheimer's Association automatically. Q: I mailed a donation in, but it does not appear on my honor scroll. A: Please allow 5-10 business days for processing. If the donation does not appear after 10 business days, please contact Felicia at x
FAQ continued... Q: Can I send in donations for more than one participant in one envelope? A: Yes, but please be very specific as to how the donations should be credited. Include the Walk location, participants name and team name if applicable. The more information you provide, the faster we can process your donations. Q: Can I check in prior to the event to avoid the long registration lines? A: Yes, we encourage you to turn in your money, pick up your registration packet and Walk shirts prior to the day of the event. Please call Felicia to schedule your pick up x 302. Q: Can people register on the day of the Walk? A: Yes, day of registration is permitted. Those needing to do so should visit the registration area to fill out a quick registration form. Donations may also be made at that time. Q: Does every member of my team need to register? A: Yes, there are several reasons we like all members of the team to register, first and most importantly, the registration form has a waiver that all walkers or their guardians should sign. These waivers are required by the cities who allow us to hold walks in their parks. Secondly, we like to know who is walking so we can thank them for their participation. Finally, we like to know how many people are participating in the walk each year. It is fun to watch the size of the event grow. Participants like to know too! Q: If I am registered online, but don t have any money to turn in on the day of the Walk, do I still need to go through registration? A: If you have turned in your money, picked up your materials at pre event check in, you can avoid the registration line and enjoy the day. If you have not picked up your Walk packet, you will need to visit the Check-In table to receive your T-Shirt, Promise Flower, etc. Q: Will the money I turn in on the day of the Walk show up online? A: Yes, day of donations will be entered online, but please allow at least one month post Walk for them to be reflected on the website. In Colorado we host 12 walks within a months time and the Denver accounting office is responsible for processing all donations into our database. It is an overwhelming task and they do it as quickly as possible. 9
The Southern Colorado Walk Committee is excited to announce we will be continuing our Memory Mile campaign for the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer s season! In an effort to further our efforts in honoring loved ones and to remind participants of the reason we Walk and continue our commitment in this fight, the first mile of our Walk route is affectionately named the Memory Mile. We are excited to offer you, our beloved teams and participants, the opportunity to honor your loved ones, with our Memory Mile Scrapbook signs, a memorial/tribute to your loved ones. Whether you are honoring someone living with Alzheimer s, a dear loved one who has passed with the disease, or those loving individuals who selflessly provide caregiving to protect our dear loved ones, we want to honor their memory, their legacy, and their love! For those of you wishing to participate in this campaign, we ask that you submit a brief tribute, to Felicia Duff, Development Coordinator, and we will be adding those tributes to free standing signs that will be posted along the Walk route on Walk day, to allow participants to take a moment, read your tribute, and be reminded of the reasons we Walk. We all have a memory to share, let's take a moment to honor those we love and share that love with others participating in the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer's. We ask that you keep your tributes brief, as space on each board will be limited, and long messages will be more difficult for Walkers to read as they pass by, but please be creative. An example may be something like the following: "Team Cherished Memories Walks to Honor our Papa" (include picture of Papa") Honoring his legacy as a wonderful husband, loving father, and admirable Papa With Love, Team Cherished Memories, the Smith & Jones Families How do you contribute to this campaign? Please complete the form on the following page and submit your tribute to Felicia Duff, fduff@alz.org no later than August 13, Please include the message as you wish it to appear. If you would like to include a photo, please be sure the photo is good quality, to avoid pixilation when printing. (Participants may submit up to 4 photos to be used for each sign.) Is there a fee to participate in this campaign? There is no fee to submit your tribute, but we do highly encourage participants to make an additional self-donation of $25 or more to your team. As we help to preserve the memory of your dear loved one, help preserve the memories of future generations by contributing to the funding of research to find an our First Survivor and help the Alzheimer s Association continue to provide support and care to Southern Colorado communities and families. 10
