2 PAGE 2 P IK E S P EA K F LY ER THE VOICE OF EAA 72 Wo-o-ow, what a day!! By Dave Elliott, MLAA President We were really pleased with the turn-out and the Bob Hall experience today. The support from the airport, and the interest from the community, were exactly what we were hoping for. EAA Chapter 72 provided just the right amount of structure to enable a safe environment for us to "show & tell" what we do out here and still have fun demonstrating "grass-roots" aviation. Loyd Remus, Bob Hall, Mike Cranford Chris Barton Jim Steward

3 August 2015 P IK E S P EA K F LY ER PAGE 3 Our deepest appreciation to: Mike Cranford EAA Chapter 72 for their work setting this up and their volunteer labor AEFCO for the labor and interest of their students CAP: Cadet Sqdn for Chris Barton Bud Silvers parking assistance, and Sr Sqdn for the aircraft display HFSC, PPPPG and Pikes Peak RC for their displays FFPD for their cooperation and support and all MLA pilots displaying, flying, and exhibiting our passion. Thank you all... and please, please pass this on to your various members that are not on this list. Today was what Meadow Lake is all about. I was really proud of this "community" today. 4 PAGE 4 P IK E S P EA K F LY ER THE VOICE OF EAA 72 President s Message This year has gone by so fast that it seems like I have been at least one month behind all year. Kfly-Market will be held on Saturday, October 10th. Hopefully I will be hearing from more members who have things to sell. If you are going to participate please me at jim@kdsteward.com. September 26th is the AOPA Fly In and if you haven t heard, we, EAA Chapter 72 members, are to serve the pancake breakfast. We need about 15 members or friends to show up at 6:00 AM to start cooking the sausage and then 10 more to show up at 7:00 AM to help serve. If you haven t signed up yet, please go the AOPA website and sign up and be sure that you indicate that you are with EAA Chapter 72 or you may end up helping out with some other project like parking. I was asked what I think is a very good question at our open house by a couple of our members and have not been able to answer it. When I asked the question at our last board meeting Tony Nesse wrote a response which I think is well written and worthy of presentation to the membership. Please read Tony s letter (page 5) and plan on discussing it at our upcoming meeting. See ya at the Saturday! Meeting Room Audio Improvements You ll notice a big change in the meeting room. No longer will speakers have to complete to be heard over the furnace/air conditioner. Even with the microphone it was sometimes a real challenge. Many thanks to Vann Norred, Chris Sedgwick, and Bill Clothier. The walls have 3 regular insulation, donated by Dave Elliott. They are covered with the heavy black industrial soundproofing as recommended and furnished by Jim Steward. Since this photo, Vann and Chris have primed, textured, and painted a light blue to match the walls. Reports are that it is very quiet with both blowers going now. Check it out at the meeting!

5 August 2015 P IK E S P EA K F LY ER PAGE PAGE 7 5 EAA 72 What Are We? By Tony Nesse Thank you for supporting these EAA Chapter 72 members! A Travel Advantage Jim Steward - our chapter president - was asked this question during the Open House recently, and has been pondering it ever since. It is simple enough to list what we are doing, which is considerable. Monthly educational and social meetings, an active Young Eagle program to introduce kids to aviation and inspire them to consider a career in the field, supporting the Aviation Education Foundation of Colorado to teach and guide motivated high school youth toward jobs as aviation professionals, providing a knowledge resource for aircraft builders and restorers where they can find and contact experienced people for help with their questions, and hosting aviation related events at MLA. Are we satisfied with this format, or should we be looking for opportunities to grow the chapter activities and offerings? Out of 150 members there is generally a hard core of about 20 or 30 who regularly come to our meetings. Visitors are welcomed, but there is little follow-up. Many of our builder members work on their projects at home, and may feel the meetings are not particularly relevant to their circumstances. Aviators come to our Saturday activities, but most leave their spouses and children at home since there are no facilities to keep them happy. EAA has started the Eagle program to encourage adults with an interest in aviation to enter flight training, we do not promote this at present. These and other related ideas are worthy of a discussion by the membership at one of our meetings. If we decide to launch efforts to realize some of the ideas, it will mean some additional involvement, but also a fun and educational experience for the participants.
