1 ANNUAL REPORT FOR UCEC PROJECTS-2016 Once again another year has passed, although in spite of our country going through an economic down grading process, crime being on the increase, abuse of women and children on a much larger scale, drug abuse which is literally tearing communities apart, Human Trafficking as we never knew it and the high rate of unemployment etc, Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre (UCEC) is delighted to make this report on some of its successful current projects and programmes during the year of UCEC has for the last 13 years run its many programmes without any form of government funding; it has been only through generous individuals and business partners that we were able to implement these much needed projects. However, UCEC finds itself with a great financial burden not only to maintain but also to expand its initiatives. 1. SHILOH HOUSE Shiloh House is a safe house for abused women, some with their children, Human Trafficked victims and rehabilitation of women in the sex trade and drug abuse. MENTEC sponsored a business course at DUT for the residents. Certificates were obtained. Draping Course by PERANA SET DESIGN was held for the Shiloh Ladies and certificates were obtained. Vegetable garden was created at Shiloh House. Residents are now eating fresh veggies from the garden. 55 Ladies have been residents at Shiloh House from January to date for various reasons. 34 ladies found employment, 3 re-united with their families, 1 left for over-seas to work; I leaving in 2wks time for over-seas to work, 1 received her nursing papers to start work, sadly 3 passed away due to the HIV/AIDS Virus. Knitting and crocheting class at Shiloh once a week. In house 12 step program for recovering addicts and alcoholics Parenting and basic beauty skills. Counseling by Professional Counselors. Shiloh ladies allowed to volunteer at the UCEC Crisis Centre Bible Study and Etiquette Program for kiddies at Shiloh. Graduations -1 Fashion Designer and 1 Pre- school teaching Post.
2 SHILOH HOUSE RESIDENTS GARDENING PROGRAMME SHILOH HOUSE MENS - Beneficiaries are from men living on the streets who want to change their lives. 6 beneficiaries are all employed and ready to move out. Men volunteer at the UCEC Crisis Centre. I resident studying FINE ARTS. 2. IMPUMELELO CRECHE- Situated in an underprivileged rural area at Amatikwe, Inanda, KZN. Impumelelo Crèche and Pre-school have 84 children in total enrolled. Most of who are AIDS Orphans and from under privileged backgrounds. A graduation was held for 25 students progressing from Grade R to Grade 1. The 25 boys and girls who graduated were presented with a pair of school shoes, a school bag and stationary donated by SA Home-loans. DUT visited and made a special soya meat Medical intern students spent a week at the crèche with the kids.
3 3. ANTI HUMAN TRAFFICKING This crime is second to illegal arms deals raking in a whopping R32billion per year. 3 rd Anti Human Trafficking Awareness Walk was held in October. Approximately 500 people participated reaching hundreds with this awareness. AHT Presentations were done at Varsity College, DUT, and Tshwane Tech College. Reached about 55 people. St Elizabeth s Church in Westville conducted a workshop in honor of women and children in Cuba.UCEC was asked to provide a stand to raise awareness on Human Trafficking-This reached plus minus 100 people. King Shaka International Airport- UCEC was asked to do a display on AHT Awareness and reached approximately 2000 people. Radio Stations, TV Channels and Newspapers reached an estimated 4.5million viewers and listeners. UCEC and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) did a display at The Royal Show Grounds in Pietermaritzburg.
4 4. SALT OF THE EARTH FEEDING SCHEME Daily Feeding From Tuesday to Friday at 11.0clock. Food collected from Pick and Pay and Woolworths. This is distributed every Wednesday to plus minus 60 ladies per week, totaling about 250 ladies per month. Commercial Clinic visits The Crisis Centre once a month to treat the pensioners and the beneficiary s. Annual Christmas Party Held for plus minus 1200 beneficiaries including their children. BENEFICIARYS AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY.
5 5. JOB PLACEMENTS/MAKEOVERS CV s are made for the beneficiary s every Wednesday. CV ed or phone calls made to secure employment. Approximately 15 guys have found employment. Makeovers- Hair -cuts and shaves were given. Clothing was provided especially for interviews and new jobs Proof of Address was given to those that needed to open bank accounts for work purposes. MAKE-OVERS BEING DONE. 6. SKILLS TRAINING Draping Course sponsored by Perana Set Design. Business Course sponsored by Mentec Sewing Classes sponsored by Shiloh House Resident Gardening sponsored by 4 th year Social Work Student. 7. LIGHT OF THE WORLD COUNSELLING CENTRE. Counseling done daily for HIV/ AIDS, Drug /Alcoholic abuse AND MINISTERY. Have sent approximately 20 beneficiaries to Kwasizabantu Mission for rehabilitation. Draping course for beneficiaries with certificates obtained. 8. WOMEN OF WORTH STREET MINISTRY A team of volunteers walk the streets weekly to distribute educational reading material and pray and encourage prostitutes, drug addicts and the homeless. A number of ladies approached on the streets ended up as residents at Shiloh House Crisis Centre for rehabilitation.
6 EXCITING NEWS KZN SLOTS donated a new kitchen and a microwave to the UCEC Crisis Centre as well as a new television and a new sliding door to Shiloh House Crisis Centre. OIL TANKING GC sponsored a generous amount of cash towards Anti Human Trafficking Awareness Walk. CALULO Investments came on board and encouraged UCEC to start a company. OASIS 828 Enterprise Recycling Business was registered to help sustain the UCEC charity. LEXIS NEXIS renovated Shiloh House Crisis Centre. SA HOME LOANS- Sponsored 6 months Rent to Shiloh House and also sponsored the whole graduation party for Impumelelo Crèche. DAILY AND ON-GOING TASKS Daily Feeding Tuesday to Friday t 11.00am UCEC accepts -4 th year Unisa Social Work Students -2 nd -4 th year DUT PR students -2 nd- 4 th year Clinical Psychology students Daily Counseling- 35 cases, 9 went to Kwasizabantu Rehabilitation Centre, 7 were re-united with their families.
