3 ME About me: I m a country girl at heart, born and raised in Montana,. I love being outdoors with my husband and daughter, and am currently obsessed with starting a backyard orchard. When I m not teaching, I work at a clinic for the underserved and enjoy volunteering.

4 WHY SERVICE & COMMUNITY HEALTH Because you will work with patients who with barriers to health regardless of the specialty you choose and we can help patients overcome these obstacles through awareness and preparation Because a person s health outcomes are heavily influenced by social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and neighborhood. Because determining the correct diagnosis and treatment plan isn t enough. Your recommended treatment plan only works if your patient has the means to follow through which may not be possible if your patient cannot afford their medications, does not have transportation to the pharmacy, or does not have the health literacy or English proficiency to understand your instructions.

6 CERTIFICATE OF DISTINCTION, COD SCH COURSE OBJECTIVES Recognize the barriers to health experienced by: Ethnic and cultural minorities Patients with different religious beliefs Low income and homeless populations LGBTQ+ patients ESP and low-literacy patients Reduce health care disparities through improved cultural competency, communication skills, and leadership skills Become familiar with the community resources available to patients

7 REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF COD-SCH Attend 16 Service Learning seminars Complete a Scholarly Project relevant to community health Complete 180 hours of service through CHIP programs Complete a 4-week community health elective as MS4 Reflection Participate in reflective assignments such as group volunteer activities, journal club, and individual mentoring sessions Learning Community Service

9 STUDENT FEEDBACK I really enjoy working with the kids and playing soccer, so for me going to these events is a chance to take a break from studying and have fun. A main goal of this is to act as role models for the kids to encourage them to stay in school and pursue higher education. MS3 discussing CHIP volunteer activity It was really amazing getting to hear from the patients themselves. I think as physicians it is easy to forget that our patients are more than their diagnosis.
