2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission We offer women of Middle Tennessee free, long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), with the goal of preventing unplanned pregnancy. Background A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee was founded in September of 2015 and began serving women requesting family planning services in May The Foundation provides free, long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) to any woman in Middle Tennessee. We are modeled after A Step Ahead Foundation in Memphis, founded by a juvenile court magistrate judge after 17 years on the bench. After seeing great successes in Memphis and contributing to the 38+% drop in teen pregnancy rates and terminations, word spread across the state. A Step Ahead of Middle Tennessee received seed money from a donor in Memphis that enabled us to get started with our important work in Nashville. We are privately funded and are the payor of last resort when any woman of child bearing age decides that LARC is her method of choice. We have partnered with six safety net clinics in Nashville that are able to provide services through A Step Ahead. In our short time of being operational, we have assisted the Neighborhood Health Clinics from having two providers to eight providers that are trained for LARC insertion and removal. In less than three years, we have served nearly 600 women in Middle Tennessee. We provide free long-acting, reversible contraception (LARC) to any woman in Middle Tennessee. Upon initial visit, we cover a pregnancy test and STI check. If a woman chooses to receive a LARC, we cover the insertion and removal, as well as any transportation to and from the clinic. We tear down all barriers so that a woman can receive the contraception that is best for her. We know that not every woman has access to the resources necessary for effective family planning, and we want to change that. Preventing unplanned pregnancy means: more stable families, less economic strain, less child neglect, reduced public cost, better educational and economic outcomes, and increased health and happiness for women and children. Impact Accomplishments in the past year:1. Served over 250 women in our community2. Partnered with an additional safety net clinic, bringing our services to six clinics in Davidson County3. Expanded our education about unintended pregnancies in the community to more nonprofits and youth programsgoals for the current year:1. Raise additional funds so that we can ensure that we will never have a gap in the ability to cover LARCs for any woman that needs our services 2. Ensure that the Middle Tennessee community is aware of A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee and knows of us as a resource that can be trusted3. Serve 30 women per month Needs Needs statement:1. Fundraising so that we can operate as planned2. Finding more volunteers to fill the needs of our committees and community outreach3. Hiring the right staff members as they will be the face of our organization4. Promoting our organization so that we are well known as a resource in Middle Tennessee5. Establishing our educational components so that we will able to educate people of all ages and backgrounds Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Donations can be made online, by mail, or over the phone. Donations are tax deductible. 3 Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson TN - Cheatham TN - Robertson TN - Rutherford TN - Williamson TN - Sumner TN - Wilson We serve the women of Middle Tennessee, specifically Davidson County residents and those in a surrounding county that are willing to travel to one of our six Davidson County clinics in Nashville. We plan to have clinics in surrounding counties in the coming years. Board Chair Statement A Step Ahead was begun in Memphis, Tennessee by a Juvenile Court Magistrate who spent 17 years observing the consequences of unplanned pregnancy on women and their families. Not surprisingly, poverty was one of the main consequences. After all, it is only common sense that if a woman is uneducated when she becomes pregnant, she is less likely to obtain a good job. She is less likely to be able to afford good prenatal care and less likely to have a healthy baby. She is less likely to be able to provide for herself and her child. If she continues to have unplanned pregnancies the cycle of poverty will only grow deeper. So it was no surprise to the Juvenile Court Magistrate that the women (and their families) that appeared before her were suffering from the effects of poverty. What was a surprise was that most of the women, when asked, had been on birth control and had tried to plan their families. However, as a result of their poverty they had been unable to pay for their medication or even their transportation to the drugstore to fill their prescriptions. After researching the effectiveness of Long Acting Reversible Birth Control, (LARC S) and their ability to help prevent poverty of women and their children, A Step Ahead was born in Memphis. Transportation and funding were provided to women who wanted to plan their pregnancies by obtaining a LARC. Over 1,000 women and their families have been served per year and the rate of unplanned pregnancies has significantly dropped in Memphis. Only good things can result for women and their families when women are able to obtain their education, obtain a job and plan their children. We know that we can replicate this work in Nashville. We have a passionate Board comprised of community volunteers, physicians, non-profit leaders and attorneys. We have received start up funding and are already working with other non-profits to cross-serve those most in need of our services. Nashville already has many clinics that serve the under served and we partner with some of those clinics. Birth control is a deeply private matter and one that is often taboo to discuss. In addition, since many people have misconceptions about LARC s, community education is vital. While abstinence may be the preferred method of birth control for some, research in St. Louis and Colorado has demonstrated that long term reversible birth control is an effective means of reducing poverty and helping women and their children get a step ahead. It is hoped that when people realize that A Step Ahead only provides prevention services and education on the benefits of women obtaining an education first and planning their families through long term reversible birth control, some of the challenges in overcoming prejudices and misconceptions will be met. CEO Statement Our organization is unique in that we are able to tear down any barrier that would prevent a woman from receiving long-acting, reversible contraception. We are able to partner with other non-profits and complement their services. The term "it takes a village" is applicable to A Step Ahead, as we have many supporters already in the community. We have partner clinics and many community partners that allow us to educate the women that utilize their programs and services. As we educate throughout the community about planning families, we hope to let women know there are more options that they may know of and that cost should not be a barrier to them choosing a LARC. Outside of abstinence, LARC's are the most effective form of birth control and enable a woman to plan her family when ready. We are excited to see the impact we will have on the Middle Tennessee community and look forward to providing education and resources to women of all ages. 3
4 Programs Programs Providing long-acting reversible contraception Description We will cover the cost of any LARC that a woman receives at a partner clinic. Prior to receiving the LARC, we pay for a pregnancy test and STI check. Budget Population Served,, Transportation Services Description We provide a free ride to and from the clinic for any services related to a woman receiving a LARC through A Step Ahead Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Budget 5700 Population Served,, Community education Description We will provide educational events throughout the community. We will have a presence at community centers, health fairs, after school programs, and outreach centers. Education will vary based on the audience. Budget Population Served,, CEO Comments We anticipate a challenge of facing a huge need, so we are very aware to grow at a pace that allows us to provide the best services to all women. We have an opportunity to partner with additional clinics and once we feel we have the funds to pay for LARCs at those clinics, we will provide services there, as well. We are identifying the best forms of outreach for different aged girls and women. Although we are privately funded and only provide prevention services, the dialogue could be challenging to start with certain audiences such as younger girls and with some faith-based organizations. 4
