2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The mission of the Kansas City Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program (KCSAPP) is to eliminate suicide in Kansas City and the surrounding region through advocacy in health policy, initiation of data collection and analysis, organization of community collaboration on assessment and prevention activities, innovative, best practices clinical training, and ongoing "Zero Suicide" system improvement among mental health, social service and first responder agencies. Our vision is that programs and services will be comprehensive, timely, multidisciplinary, collaborative, culturally, age and gender sensitive. Also that outcomes will be measurable. Background Statement In 2003, a group of academic institutions, private organizations, treatment providers, and concerned citizens came together to consider a strategy for improving awareness and resources for suicide prevention. The group developed a mission statement and initial set of guiding principles. Realizing it would be important to delineate a strategic plan to underpin their efforts, the group focused on defining regional strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to generate this document, which defines a strategic planning process and potential participants. In 2004 and 2005, members of the KCSAPP committee were invited to participate in a national program out of the University of rth Carolina and funded by the Center for Disease Control called the Prevent Institute. At two separate meetings with the institute, the KCSAPP members were able to develop a comprehensive program for adolescent suicide awareness, prevention and intervention called Open the Corridor. In 2007, KCSAPP began identifying and collaborating with selected school districts to begin implementation of the program. In September 2007, the Center School District of Kansas City, MO, agreed to partner with KCSAPP in this initiative. One of the primary suggestions to come out of meetings held with officials from several school districts was the need for a web site that students, adults, and school staff can access for information and resources. In late 2007 and early 2008, with funds from the State of Missouri, a web site was created to provide access to information and local community resources in a suicide crisis. In addition to the website, a partnership was formed with ReDiscover Mental Health Center to provide immediate and quality intervention services to anyone from Center School District seeking help. Impact Statement KCSAPP historically has worked with school districts developing assessment measures and surveying for risk. KCSAPP has also presented numerous workshops on suicide assessment and prevention, in collaboration with insurance companies and social service agencies. In 2017 KCSAPP held several educational luncheon programs and a full day program on Zero Suicide in October In vember KCSAPP hosted a convening of key agencies involved in suicide assessment and prevention, and survivor services. In 2018, KCSAPP entered into a contract with the Health Care Foundation to conduct a community wide needs assessment that will involve convening over 75 service providers, developing a website to house timely and critical information, gathering, analyzing and sharing data, and organizing clinical training based on what is learned from best practice research and local community requirements. 3 CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement KCSAPP is committed to bringing the latest knowledge of how to assist anyone in Kansas City having a difficult time dealing with the challenges of their life circumstances. This all volunteer organization wants to ensure that individuals and professionals are better informed on how to identify when they or a friend or colleague are considering suicide and to know where to turn for help. Our goal is to open the corridor and to help people gain better access to providers who are trained in the latest successful interventions. We believe in the adage that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and that a better solution is possible if we all work together to improve education and access to qualified mental health care. KCSAPP provides a forum where young and old people can be heard and providers and insurers can meet to develop solutions that will be acceptable and work in the various neighborhoods and communities in the greater Kansas City area. Working together, we believe that this comprehensive approach to mental health education and care will work to reduce the burden of suicide to our friends and neighbors. 4 Programs Programs Open the Corridors Program Description Category The Open the Corridors Program was developed to dispel the negative myths adolescents have regarding mental health services. Kansas City Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program believed that we needed to give students a clearer picture of what treatment might entail, and, simultaneously, to improve the quality of the actual services available to students. We believe strongly that we have to help mental health services for suicidal adolescents be more strongly integrated with school needs than they often are now. Problems with waiting lists, stigmatizing practices, and insurance funding need to be minimized for these teenagers, and therapists who deal with suicidal adolescents need advanced training in the newest, evidence based methods of intervention Members of the Board of Directors of KCSAPP serve by appointment on the Governor's Committee for Suicide Prevention in Kansas and Missouri. Mental Health, Substance Abuse Programs, General/other Suicide Prevention Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The short termed success of the Open the Corridors program will be that adolescents will feel more competent in requesting help should they feel depressed or suicidal. Parents and other adults will have greater knowledge about adolescent suicide and how to appropriately assist teens in getting help if they are suicidal. The ease of accessing information and assistance should be greatly enhanced by removing the barriers that teens often perceive as present if they ask for help. Education to raise the level of awareness of suicide for all stakeholders, begin to dispel the myths of seeking help for adolescents, provide evidence based therapy to local therapist, and begin to remove the barriers to services to children and adolescents. Develop website and collateral materials for information and education about suicide and how and where to go for immediate help. Program success is monitored by the number of students, faculty, parents and community members who participate in educational sessions. Pre and post session assessments of knowledge and attitudes. The number of school districts that participate. Number of referrals to care. Number of hits on the website. Ultimate, a reduction in suicide rates. Adults and students will exhibit more knowledge about suicide and suicide prevention through pre and post tests. A survey given to adults supporting students and therapist treating suicidal students will report easier access for suicidal students. At least two new school districts implement the Open the Corridor Program. KCSAPP employs an information-driven coalition model, which was shown effective by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Fighting Back, Jelinski & Hern, 1991) Research and implementation with schools in Greater KC area and outlying areas 4

5 Suicide Postvention Program Description Category Population Served Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Knowing that some suicides are unpreventable, and that there is more vulnerability for another suicide in families where one has occurred, KCSAPP will link survivors to resources in the community for support from organizations that focus on trauma such as the Trauma Support Network and to local support groups such as Suicide Awareness and Survivor Support. Mental Health, Substance Abuse Crisis Intervention Programs Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.), Adults, KCSAPP will develop printed materials for survivors of a suicide death giving information regarding the grief and trauma process and a list of local and national resources for support and comfort. Yes Organization Comments The KCSAPP is looking for capacity building funding in order to begin to reach the goals identified in their strategic plan. Because of the broad scope of services and programs needing to be developed, it can only be accomplished by having the financial resources to hire full and part-time staff, by establishing an office in which to conduct business including materials and equipment,by creating printed material for education and awareness programs, and funding to enable training of professionals. Permanent staff will be able to conduct daily business, arrange meetings, enhance communications between partner organizations, and most importantly, be a referral source for anyone seeking assistance for suicide. All offices need essential supplies and equipment in order to conduct business. The KCSAPP would like to create education materials for all ages that will increase levels of awareness about suicide as well as helpful resources and how to get immediate and appropriate assistance in an emergency. A key component of the program is to be able to link suicidal persons with professionals trained in effective interventions and treatments. Funding will be needed to ensure that all 10
