1 Prism Youth Initiative SUMMARY Mission Prism Youth Initiative is dedicated to supporting, affirming, encouraging, enabling and empowering the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth ages of Manatee County. We are committed to doing this in an environment that is safe, hospitable, warm and welcoming. We want all to know that no matter where they are on their journey, Prism is a place where they can find unconditional acceptance. 3 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement In the past year we have provided youth with a safe place to be themselves and provided case management services. Six youth who entered our peer mentoring program had described themselves as suicidal and are now flourishing and doing well in school. We have provided weekly counseling by a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (at no cost to the youth) which has helped to stabilize and motivate youth who were previously depressed, despondent or suicidal. Our center has been open Saturdays from 12 to 3 PM, staffed by trained adults, who provide lunch or snacks. Youth who attend find peers who have gone or are going through their own coming out process, helping to end feelings of isolation.this year, as a fundraiser, Prism sponsored Manatee County's third annual Pride Festival with unprecedented success. Even with pouring rain, over 1000 people (LGBT and allies) attended a half day of fun and music and made connections that strengthened the community and illustrated to the youth that Manatee County can be accepting and affirming.we has hoped to raise enough funding to expand center hours and to provide greater access to services and the number of clients served, however, while a solid financial success, Pride has not reached the level to allow expanding center hours. Needs Statement Expand our peer support program to a full time after school program by increasing staffing to full time at an estimated cost of $30,000 per year.create a transitional housing assistance program for youth age who are homeless at an estimated cost of $25,000 a year.provide transportation assistance and or vouchers to and from the center, school, or employment. A video projector for program presentations $ Gift cards for homeless youth for clothing and other personal items. Background Statement Prism first opened it's doors in December of 2010 to address the needs of the LGBTQ youth of Manatee County. Prior to Prism, LGBTQ youth were being referred to agencies in St. Pete or Sarasota and most youth could not join those programs due to transportation issues. Prism Youth was able to move to a dedicated small house which provides privacy for our LGBTQ youth. Due to the hard work of a very committed Board of Directors, Prism was able to incorporate in March of 2011 and received it's 501(c)(3) in May of Our brochures were approved by the Superintendent of Manatee County Schools and forwarded to every secondary guidance counselor in the school system. In our first year Prism served over 40 youth with nearly 250 sign ins for services. Since then, youth referrals have continued to grow. In the current year, Prism has provided services to over 80 youth. Statement from the Board Chair w in our sixth year, Prism Youth Initiative has been very active in our community serving over 80 LGBTQ youth. We have helped some of our year old youth who have become homeless due to rejection by family to find safe housing, gainful employment and also helped them enroll in school. We provide crisis and suicide intervention, therapy by a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (at no cost), as well as HIV prevention, education and testing. Our youth council, together with board support, provides strong support and skill building to address and prevent bullying in schools. We work with some community partners to help bring awareness to bullying in schools in an effort to end it. We look forward to continuing and growing our relationship with the schools in the years to come. We hope to expand our center hours and services, to provide after school and summer center hours. We actively work with other community partners to address drug prevention with the youth. I am pleased to serve as Board President. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I know that the issues that LGBT youth deal with every day can be life threatening. Without Prism, the youth would be left with no safe haven in Manatee County. We are very excited and looking forward to new opportunities in the coming years. While we have made great strides, we have faced major challenges in raising adequate funding. The Board of Directors has a giving policy. This policy includes not only volunteer hours but also having 100% of the 3
4 Board commit to provide financial support; however, this is not enough to be able to provide expanded services. We need funding to provide a full time staff member to expand the center hours and to operate an LGBTQ Crisis Hotline so we are better able to assist any LGBTQ youth in their moment of crisis. Statement from the CEO/Executive Director Prism is the only agency located in Manatee County providing services to LGBTQ youth. Formerly, this youth population found, to their great distress, that limited direct services were available only by agencies outside the county. With the help of a committed Board and a very generous church, Prism was born. Our youth do not come to Prism for a hangout place, they come in need of services. We have many fun events, but our main work has been helping youth who are alone, rejected, suicidal, and homeless. We can attest to having changed and saved lives. Areas Served FL- Manatee Prism is located in Bradenton and serves youth from every area of Manatee County. 5 PROGRAMS Peer Support Program Description The goal of the Peer Counseling Support program is to decrease depression in at-risk youth and provide them with tools to cope with familial rejection and societal prejudice. Counseling by a licensed professional together with peer mentoring will help decrease the risk of suicide and depression; strengthen program participants' willingness to remain in school and seek higher education.we refer youth to board member, Valerie Fisher, LMHC who provides (in kind) free family and individual therapy to our youth. We also refer youth to Manatee Glens for acute care.funds will be used to extend our Center hours and provide for case management and follow up.case management will include intake, evaluation, referrals for services (including counseling, healthcare, tutoring, family law services, government programs) and follow up on referrals made. Budget $54, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Mental Health, Substance Abuse Programs, General/other Peer Counseling Adolescents Only (13-19 years) 95% of all clients will report a decrease in level of depression as a result of being taught healthy coping skills. Clients will develop a sense of belonging in a safe place. Full case management will be provided to ensure client success. Goal #1 All clients will be measured using the Beck Depression Scale. They will be given a pretest and a post-test. 95% of clients will acheive a better post test score on the Beck Depression scale. Goal #2 80% of all clients will increase academic achievement as evidenced by maintaining or improving grades, decreasing drop out rates, and appropriate response to bullying. Results will be measured with student report cards, drop out rates, and survey of program participants.00.clients will receive tools to increase functioning in schools and handle bullying. Goal #1 monitored by Beck Depression ScaleGoal #2 monitored by student report cards and surveysprogram overseen and evaluated by Executive Director and Licensed Mental Health Counselor Several clients have entered our program who felt isolated and suicidal. These clients are now much less depressed. They feel a sense of belonging and are still in school and performing much better than when they entered. Comments Program Comments by Organization We plan to expand this program to be a full time after school program. Later this year we will implement a structured program that is already in use in several high schools and colleges with proven success. The program will also be expanded to include tutoring and followup. We hope to include a vocational component with adult mentors who work in the field chosen by the client. 5
