2 BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement Increased our support base through social media and news media coverage.increased awareness of Overcome through a community awareness campaign rooted in area hospitals and Easter Seals of Southwest Florida.Successfully implemented two new programs: Teddy Bear Care and A Little Love.Formed relationships with Sarasota Memorial Hospital's NICU and Manatee Memorial's Emergency Department. To increase donor base so children who are in needs of medical accessories may be eligible to receive financial assistance.to increase assistance to children with disabilities.to complete a child's full physical, financial and emotional needs/wishes. To introduce a referral system to parents of disabled children which provides medical and therapeutic outlets. Needs Statement 1. Financial support - $10,000 for the year2. Media awareness3. Community support (increase attention to the needs of children with disabilities)4. Fundraising support (volunteers) 5. Volunteers with nonprofit experience Background Statement My husband asked me when I first brought up the idea of Overcome Birth Defects what I hoped to achieve by starting a nonprofit. My reason was quite simple: to help children. Through Overcome Birth Defects my goal is to provide resources to adults and toys to children.we have also begun two new programs this past year: Teddy Bear Care and A Little Love. Teddy Bear Care links parents to groups and medical resources to help parents understand their child's disability. A Little Love strives to bridge the gap between the older sibling and the baby in the neonatal intensive care unit. I was born with several congenital birth defects that have in part shaped who I am today. I spent my childhood visiting doctors, specialists, clinics, and hospitals. Vacations and holidays were spent in hospitals undergoing various surgeries to help correct or make my birth defects functional. I remember the feeling of dread as a holiday approached because it meant pain and a holiday spent recovering from surgery. So why start a nonprofit? I felt more in control when I had the ability to research and learn about my choices in regards to my medical care. I also recall the joy when the Big Apple Circus and the NYFD would come through the children's wing and pass out toys. It is my belief that a person with a birth defect or a parent whose child has a birth defect should not have to feel alone, isolated or clueless as to where to start researching or sharing their experiences/feelings. Children who are in the hospital should have a toy to help reduce the anxiety, stress, and pain of treatments being administered. Statement from the Board Chair I became involved with this organization because it gives back to the community on a grassroots level. The Founder and the Board are volunteers and receive no compensation for the work they do. Seeing the smiles on children's faces when they realize they do not forget makes this position meaningful to me. The founder, Christina, was born with several congenital birth defects that resulted in her spending numerous hours in doctors offices, hospitals, and outpatient centers. She decided to pursue a career in Maternal and Child Health/ Community and Family Health due to her experiences with birth defects. Christina holds a Doctorate of Professional Studies from Albany Medical College's Alden March Bioethics Institute with a focus on Health Policy and Ethics. Christina also graduated from University of South Florida's College of Public Health with a Master of Public Health Degree in Community and Family Health specializing in Maternal and Child Health. She also has a Master of Science in Bioethics from Albany Medical College's Alden March Bioethics Institute. She has dedicated her career to helping mothers and children in need. Christina has worked in Southwest Florida for over twelve years Statement from the CEO/Executive Director Overcome Birth Defects is the only non-profit serving the needs of parents informed that their child has a 2
3 disability. We provide medical and therapeutic referrals to help the parents understand and talk with others who have experience with a particular disability. Providing referrals to those who can assist parents of children with disabilities is important to me because I understand, as a disabled person, how important it is to know and understand the nature of a disability. 4 PROGRAMS Teddy Bear Care Description How to find medical help for your child. Many parents are not aware of the medical services which are available to their children, or they need help accessing those services. We provide medical referrals as well as funds to parents of children who are disabled. By partnering parents with medical resources and support groups, parents can better understand their child's disability. Budget $ Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Health Care, General/Other Health Care, General/Other Adults Children and Youth (0-19 years) Elderly and/or Disabled By being able to provide referrals to resources and parental groups those who are learning about their child's disability are better able to understand and enhance their child's well-being. After receiving a Teddy Bear with referrals, a parent can then seek out the necessary medical services while also sharing and learning with other parents who have children with the same disability. Through the program, A Little Love parents who have a neonatal baby can now work with an older sibling on understanding their sibling's needs and health issues. Parents have an easy reference guide which provides service referrals in one quick step because of Teddy Bear Care. The availability of a handbook has increased awareness of medical services, the potential needs a child will have and access to parental groups so they may share their experiences with others. A Little Love has provided a way for parents to build a bridge between siblings while also involving the older sibling in the new baby's care. Surveys and interviews with medical staff. A family was told their unborn child would be born with Downs Syndrome. After learning this, they were unsure of where to go for help or what to do to ensure their child's growth and development. They were put in touch with Overcome Birth Defects and given a Teddy Bear. The brochure helped guide the parents through the difficult news and provided them access to information which they were then able to translate into care for their child. 4
5 A Little Love Description A Little Love bridges the gap between an older sibling and a preemie. The program provides a gift from the preemie to the older child which allows for conversation between the parents and child discussing the wellbeing of the younger sibling. A Little Love also provides books for parents to read to the babies as they fight to grow stronger. Budget $5, Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Health Care, General/Other Health Care, General/Other Adults Children and Youth (0-19 years) Elderly and/or Disabled A Little Love began in December As of this date, it has provided gifts to 20 children. To be followed. Interviews with medical staff. Too new to have data. Comments Program Comments by Organization Often parents are unaware of programs which exist to help aid their child. It is the program's goal to not only increase awareness but to help link parents with the appropriate medical and psychological/therapeutic organizations to help their child thrive. 5
