I always enjoy the break that the holiday season provides and the renewed spirit so many people have at the beginning of January. The holiday break this year allowed me some time to reflect and relax and has left me feeling refreshed with a bright outlook for the coming months. I hope you all had a relaxing break and were left feeling renewed and ready to get going again. Although the hustle and bustle of the late December has past, the FES Big Bend Chapter calendar has not thinned out. We will be holding our monthly meeting on January 20th at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum again this month. It should be an informative presentation on the City of Tallahassee s master plans for water and wastewater. February is quite possibly our busiest month of the year with all the usual educations community outreach programs as well as MATH- COUNTS and Engineer s Week activities, including the annual joint Engineer s Week Banquet. February is quickly approaching and we need lots of volunteers to make MATHCOUNTS a success so if you are interested in helping please contact John Baker at bdozen@hotmail.com. Engineer s Week is February th this year with the banquet on Friday, February 25 th. As you may know, each year at the banquet we give out awards to our members. Nominations for awards to be presented at the Engineers Week Banquet are due at the beginning of February. The awards can include nominees for the following categories: Young Engineer of the Year ( Age 35 or Younger) Engineer of the Year Government Engineer of the Year Outstanding Technical Award Outstanding Service to the Engineering Profession For more information on award qualifications, if you would like to serve on the Awards Committee, or if you would like to nominate someone for an award please contact Mark Fuller at mark.fuller@talgov.com. I am contacting you as your name appeared on the contact list for the Big Bend Chapter of the FL Engineering Society. I would very much like to ask for your assistance. Leon County currently has a vacant Energy Coordinator position ( This is a unique opportunity to be part of an emerging aspect of sustainability and become a valuable member of our team. We have had a very hard time finding qualified applicants. In fact, after advertising for nearly two months and positing the position in numerous publications and on-line we have no one worthy of consideration. My request to you is for assistance in helping to spread the word of this wonderful opportunity. Perhaps your Chapter has routine luncheons which I may briefly address, a listserv to reach out with, a website to post the job opening, or even your personal knowledge of potential candidates. I am more than happy to attend any event, or speak with interested parties on a one-on-one basis to answer questions. Any way in which you may assist would be greatly appreciated. Please note, we anticipate negotiating a salary well above the minimum stated. Thank you for your consideration, -Maggie Maggie Theriot Sustainability Manager Leon County, FL (850) TheriotM@LeonCountyFL.gov More Big Bend News Continued on page #5
