1 PROBUS ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INC President s Report Hello and greetings to all It is really heart warming to hear of all the numerous activities of the various clubs throughout the state. These range from getaways to many parts of Australia, significant Anniversaries being celebrated in grand style to outings and visits to local attractions. We welcome on board the new Club of Bridgetown and surrounding districts. Our thanks go to Don Faulks and Barbara Johnston for the effort they put into the commencement of this club. We, I am sure wish Barbara the newly elected President and her team every success with the new club. Unfortunately the Atwell Club has had to close due to the necessary positions not being able to be filled for the current year. At the close of the June PSPL Board meeting, Winston Marsh was installed as the Western Australian representative Board member for the forthcoming three years. We extend our congratulations to Winston and wish him all the best in representing this state in considering the affairs of Probus within the South Pacific Region. Winston will continue as RDPC representing Rotary District 9465 for the foreseeable future. Since my last report the three Southern Region Information days have all been held, with good club representation at all meetings. In all, over 220 Probus members attended this year s information days. Thank you all for your support and I trust the information provided was of benefit to you all. This year PAWA celebrates its 30 th Anniversary. To recognise this occasion we are arranging for a function to be held at the Convention Centre in Mandurah on the 11 th September. A committee has been formed mainly by representatives from some Mandurah Clubs to assist in the organisation. Please put this date in your Probus diaries and encourage members to attend. Our Half yearly General Meeting will form part of the program eliminating the necessity to arrange another function. The newly elected Chairman of PSPL will be joining us for this occasion. Further information will be distributed to all clubs following the next planning meeting. We have received advice that the 2014 Rendezvous scheduled to be held in Sydney has been cancelled due to lack of registrations received. This is really sad news for all those who had organised themselves to attend. As an addition to these News and notes we have included a survey which has been forwarded to us from PSPL for members to complete indicating their interest in attending future Rendezvous. Please encourage members to complete this survey the results of which will assist PSPL in determining the future of Rendezvous. On this same subject PAWA had made a submission prior to receiving the above news to hold the 2017 Rendezvous in Western Australia. We sincerely hope that Rendezvous will continue to be part of the Probus Calendar and that our submission will be considered positively by the PSPL Board. One of the outcomes of the Strategic Planning exercise carried out in 2013 was to appoint a consultant to assist in developing strategies for clubs to attract members. The first strategy a MEDIA RELATIONS GUIDE is now attached for use by all clubs. Please consider its contents and utilise the suggestions within the document. Please utilise this guide and do not be afraid to contact Jim Ward by , copying PAWA to enable us to determine its effectiveness. Olwyn and I proceed overseas shortly which was all organised prior to me agreeing to accept the role of President for the coming year. Whilst away Elizabeth Hardy will act as President and if you require any assistance or would like a visit from PAWA please contact Elizabeth., or other members of the committee if appropriate. I look forward to seeing many Past Presidents at the luncheon on the 19 th August at the Swan Yacht Club.. Enjoy Probus and the Fun, Fellowship and Friendship it offers... 3 * * * * * * PAWA INFORMATION * * * * * * Several new Probus Committee members have contacted me recently seeking advice about PSP procedures, forms or other administrative support information, for example a Club membership application form. There is lots of useful information readily available on the PSPL web site. Click on this link and it will take you to the website. When you get to the home page look near the top to a line of sub-page names which provide much of the information you may need to support your Club. In particular the page named Club Administration has admin information like PSPL policies, forms, insurance, etc. etc. However you will not be able to get into this section if your Club has not already obtained a user name and password. To get a user name and password, ring PSPL on their toll free number explain the situation and give them your address and ask them to send you a user name and password via . Yours in Probus Regards Darrell Acting Secretary Probus Association of WA We appreciate you all lead very busy lives, but, it is disappointing that of our 4706 Probus Club members in the Metro/Mandurah area no one has come forward to volunteer for the position of PAWA Secretary. Your duties will no be arduous, as Betty Saw has kindly agreed to continue with the photo coping and distribution duties THANK YOU For giving this request your urgent consideration. Meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of each month at Piney Lakes Environment Centre, Murdoch am. Please contact President Graeme on and have a chat or him glbrown@primus.com.au ALL OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE A GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE THEY DON T BITE...PLEASE COME AND JOIN THEM. 4 CLUB NEWS CLUBS CELEBRATING ANNIVERSARIES IN JULY 25th ANNIVERSARY KATANNING PROBUS CLUB - 1st July Congratulations and warmest wishes may you enjoy many more years of FUN, FRIENDSHIP & FELLOWSHIP GOOD BYE We are sorry to have to report the closure of the Probus Club of Atwell, it is very unfortunate that they were unable to form a Committee this year. It is hoped that most members will join other clubs in the area WELCOME We are pleased to announce the formation of a new club the Probus Club of Bridgetown, President: Barbara Johnson. PO Box 739, Bridgetown 6255 See full details in the South West Region Report. (page 6) IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT THE 2014 PROBUS RENDEZVOUS IN SYDNEY SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF NUMBERS 4
5 * * * * * * SOUTH WEST REGION REPORT* * * * * * SOUTH WEST GET TOGETHER 2014 Please continue to remind your members about the South West Get Together hosted by South Bunbury Club this year. The club is putting a lot of effort into making it a special day and I encourage all clubs to get as many members as possible to attend. The venue at Dardanup Heritage Centre is amazing and there is lots to do and see. They have a comprehensive website if you google Dardanup Heritage Centre. Several clubs have visited it before as an outing but don t let that deter you as this will be a special day with the chance to meet and mingle with Probians from all over the South West. The date is Tuesday 14th October. The cost is $35 which includes a reduced entrance fee and all day tea and Coffee, morning tea and a finger food lunch. Parking and facilities are excellent. If you only have one club outing in October make it this one.. More information and registration forms will be sent soon. SEE YOU THERE!! DON T FORGET THE PAWA BIRTHDAY ON 11TH September in Mandurah. NOW FOR SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS We have a new club in the South West in Bridgetown. The Combined Probus Club of Bridgetown-Blackwood Valley has been formed. They had their first formal club meeting on 11th June and received their certificate of accreditation from Bridgetown Rotary Secretary Alan Wilson. The inaugural President is Barbara Johnson and she and her committee were sworn in. The club has 42 Foundation members who were presented with foundation member pins and with more nomination forms to come the Expectation is that there will be over 50 by next meeting. The club meets every second Wednesday. The area covered by this dynamic new club takes in Balingup, Boyup Brook and Nannup so if your members know anyone in that area interested in joining Probus tell them to contact Barbara. ( Mobile and johnsonk@bigpond.com ). That s all for now. Yours in Probus, Don Faulks, PAWA South West Representative
6 GREAT SOUTHERN REPORT Denmark Club We approved membership for three new members, bringing membership to 59, so room for one more. As we have others planning to join, we will soon have a waiting list again. This makes it important that work towards the formation of a second Denmark Club proceeds without too much delay. Regrettably, the Rotary representative at the planning meeting in Albany failed to show up. PAWA was represented by Graeme Brown and Graham Kirkwood, our regional rep, also attending were Bill Ginbey, Mo Mulholland from Denmark Club and Winston Marsh RDPC. All three are committed to the new Club s formation, so the no show by Rotary was disappointing. We have proceeded with another meeting with Rotary rep Mike O Meara in attendance. An article re the formation of the new club has already appeared in the local Albany Weekender newspaper, which has a rather large circulation. Further articles and notices will appear in the paper with an array of posters being circulated within the Denmark area. Combined Probus Club of Albany has received 5 applications for membership in the past month. These applicants will be inducted in July. Dana Norgaard spoke about American Indians, in particular the significance of the town of Pipestone, a spiritual place to Native Americans in the south-west corner of Minnesota. Katanning Probus Club will be celebrating their 25 th anniversary on the 28 th June. A luncheon will be held at the Federal Hotel. I will be attending and presenting, on behalf of PAWA, a certificate to the club. Look out for the Albany Anzac 100 years commemoration flyer. Graham Kirkwood Great Southern Probus Regional Representative Kirkwood@iinet.net.au SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU SMILE TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS. Your Kids are becoming you...but your grandchildren are Perfect! Going out is good...coming home is better! You forget names...but it s OK because other people forget they even know you! The things you use to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don t care to do then anymore. You miss the days when everything worked with just an On and Off switch. You tend to use more four letter words...when?...what?... What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody Whispers. But Old is good for some things: Old Songs, Old Movies and best of all, OLD FRIENDS! 6
