2 National Days (907) NEWS OCTOBER 2018 VOLUME X 101 E. 5th Avenue North Pole, Alaska Dear Senior Friends: I missed the Birthday Luncheon in September, attending a Homemakers, Family Community Education Conference in Hatcher Pass. Special thanks to our Vice President, Pat Arthur for filling in for me. I heard she did a great job. The Conference theme was: Many Hands Makes Volunteering Fun. This is a subject dear to my heart. We have so many willing hands at our Senior Center. But we can always use more hands to lighten the load of the usual volunteers. Volunteerism was evident for our Rummage/Trunk/Bake Sale on September 7 th and 8 th. We made a whopping $ for our Center, while having a fun time. It took a dedicated group to see this happen. Now in October we are busy again. Our delicious $5.00 donation weekday lunches continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Sign-up sheet is on the Café wall on the yellow clipboard. We had a nice Dinner at the Center in September and will have another on October 26 th. Come to the Center for an elegant night on the town, with service and no work for you. Sign up on the office bulletin board. Cost is $ Don t miss out on this fun evening. October 20 th will be our Fall Bazaar of hand made items by our friends and neighbors. Sign up soon for a table. At $20.00 per table, they will fill up fast. Lunch will be served. The menu will be comfort food: Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Sorry we had to postpone until early 2019, our October Trivia Night. It was a conflict of time and other issues. Farewell Christina: Our Wonderful Christina Baker is moving, due to her husband s employment. Christina is a wonderful asset to our Center. We will miss her smiling face and always clever ideas. So, if you know of anyone interested in applying for cleaning the Center or being our paid cook: Contact Sharon Kubacki, Chairman of the Hiring Committee. (907) If she is unavailable the other committee members are Barbara Sevier and Hunter. Goldie Southwood Santa s Senior, Board President NATIONAL COFFEE WITH A COP DAY Wednesday, October 3rd National Coffee with a Cop Day brings men and women in uniform together with their communities to connect over a cup of joe. Inspired by the cliche about officers and their coffee shop donuts, National Coffee with a Cop Day encourages communities to sponsor an event that will bring citizens and those on patrol together. The opportunity for open dialogue, break down barriers and improve communication creates a valuable bridge to relationships in our communities. HISTORY In 2016, the first National Coffee with a Cop Day took place across the nation. The idea was launched by the members of the Hawthorne Police Department in Hawthorne, California in They sought ways to interact with their community every day more successfully. As a result, they established a Coffee with a Cop events to do just that. Throughout the year they make meaningful connections, and the idea has spread across the country to all 50 states! COLUMBUS DAY Monday, October 8th Columbus Day is an United States observance held each year on the second Monday in October. The day signifies Christopher Columbus arrival to America on October 12, HISTORY Colorado first observed Columbus Day in 1906 as it became an official state holiday. More and more people and states began to recognize Columbus Day. In 1937, Columbus Day became a federal holiday in the United States. There are many instances of people observing Columbus voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, there were celebrations in New York City and other US cities, celebrating the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to join together in celebration of Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the anniversary in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic teachings were framed around themes of support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation and celebrating social progress.
