2 SANTA S SENIORS WITH JULY BIRTHDAYS Marked with * 80 Years or Older (907) NEWS santaseniors@alaska.net 101 E. 5th Avenue North Pole, Alaska JULY 2017 VOLUME VII Dear Senior Friends June was a month to remember! The Rummage /Trunk /Bake Sales/ BBQ were a resounding success, thanks to all the fabulous volunteers. Our Left-Overs went to New Hope s Rummage Sale, then in turn, they brought back their left-over Books, Puzzles and Games. NOW We are having a PORCH Sale. We will continue adding to the porch until August 19 th when we have the: BIG BOOK/RUMMAGE EXTRAVAGANZA We will continue adding items from the Center to the sale. We need to purge the Center excesses. Keep checking the porch for signs or the items themselves. The visit from the Elders from the Fairbanks Native Association on June 23 rd was so much fun! We had a delicious Pot Luck, Bingo and Root Beer Floats. About 30 of us enjoyed the fun and fellowship. They will return on July 21 st. Mark your calendars. Steak Night was a delicious hit again. It is wonderful to get out of the house and be elegantly waited on. Next month s Steak Night (7/28) will be $10 if you bring your own steak. $20 if the Center supplies the steak. All the other menu items were DELICIOUS as usual. Please sign up in advance! Celebrate your Independence at the 4 th of July Pancake feed (8-10:30 a.m.) and watching the parade at 11 a.m. and Root Beer Floats. Check out the bulletin board. 4 JULY BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS We had such a great time listening to and laughing with our guest speaker, Diann Darnall with Senior Games. Diann shared information about the different events that will be held. Diann reminded everyone that if you like to laugh and have fun you should be apart of this event. If you are unable to participate in competing in the games you could also volunteer or be a spectator She reminded us that seniors love spectators. This will be the 15th annual Senior Games and will have events in North Pole as well as Fairbanks, last year participants joined from 13 different states. So please sign up or plan to attend and help celebrate active aging. Pictured to the left is July s Volunteer of the Month, J. Hunter. 5 INDEPENDENCE DAY Each year on July 4, The United States celebrates Independence Day. This day is a federal holiday which commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Political speeches and ceremonies along with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, baseball games, class reunions and family reunions take place all across the country celebrating our independence. Along with the fireworks, there are songs associated with the Fourth of July holiday, some of which include: our National Anthem The Star-Spangled Banner, God Bless America, America the Beautiful, My Country, Tis of Thee, This Land Is Your Land, Stars and Stripes Forever, God Bless the U.S.A., Yankee Doodle and Dixie. At noon, a Salute to the Union is fired, each Independence Day, by any capable military base. This is a salute of one gun for each state in the United States. Happy Independence Day! ************************************* Dear Santa s Seniors, My heart is still smiling from the amazing money tree that was given to me at the May Birthday Luncheon.
