2 SANTA S SENIORS WITH SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS Marked with * 80 Years or Older (907) NEWS santaseniors@alaska.net September 2017 VOLUME IX Dear Senior Friends, 101 E. 5th Avenue North Pole, Alaska August was an interesting month! We finally got the proposed design for the NEW, IMPROVED, SANTA'S SENIOR CENTER! The estimated construction will be January through June, While the Center is under construction, we are negotiating for meeting space elsewhere, and will let you know as soon as we know for sure. We have storage space available and will start gradually moving out of the Contractor's way before construction. The footprint of the building will remain the same size, but new materials such as our boiler, lighting, insulation etc. should improve our heating and electrical bills. The new kitchen design and moving the gift shop should make the Center easier to use. The same friendly atmosphere will return when we return. We hope to have another meeting space in the interim, to continue our exercise, games, and pot lucks, to maintain our close knit "family". Kitchen facilities may or may not be available. We will let you know. The rest of this year will continue as usual here at the Center, with our Book Sale in September and our Fall Bazaar in October. Stop by the Center and keep reading the Bulletin Board for up-coming events. Be sure to sign-up in advance for the Birthday Luncheons the third Wednesday of each month. Call Jana: Monday thru Friday, 11 am - 3 pm if you cannot sign-up in person. ( ). 4 AUGUST BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON HIGHLIGHTS The birthday luncheon was amazing this month we had our very own Laura Weston as our guest speaker this month. Laura shared her experience at a Native Alaskan culture camp in Sand Point, out in the Aleutians. There were photos of the beautiful landscapes and water, the Quagan Tayagungin tribe, fishing, music, arts, and dance. We had a great time and thank Laura for sharing her experience with us. Pictured below is August s Volunteer of the Month, Pat Arthur. Pat does so much for our center we are truly blessed to have her. Here are just a few tasks that Pat routinely does for us, planting and caring for flowers, shopping, event help, event organizing, storage upkeep, and help with service for the birthday luncheon. 5 August 2017 National Days Labor Day September 4, 2017 The first Monday of every September is dedicated to the men and women who have labored to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition that has its roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American worker force. As you celebrate this day, consider and appreciate your hard work and how it has added to the well-being and prosperity of our country and use #NationalLaborDay to post on social media. Cheese Pizza Day September 5, 2017 Hold the toppings, please. It s National Cheese Pizza Day!In ancient Greece, the Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese which some believe is the beginning of the pizza. Stand up to Cancer Day September 8, 2017 Observed annually on the second Friday in September, Stand Up To Cancer Day honors those who have been affected by this disease. An annual fundraising event is held in conjunction with this day. A national TV event also occurs on or around this day every year. Make a donation and use #StandUpToCancerDay to post on social media. Grandparent s Day September 10, 2017 Each year on the Sunday following Labor Day, grandchildren across the country honor their grandparents. There is a special bond that can only be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents. Grandparents are full of hugs and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience, love, and guidance. National Grandparents Day gives grandchildren the opportunity to show love and appreciation to their grandparents. The forget-me-not is the official flower for National Grandparents Day. A Song for Grandma and Grandpa by Johnny Prill would be the official song of the United States National Grandparents Day holiday. Show your appreciation for everything your grandparents have done for you. Keep them in mind and use #NationalGrandparentsDay to post on social media. CENTER NEEDS *Paper Bowls *Lg.
