1 Islington Giving Annual Review 2015 Supported 25 projects with new grants totalling over 600,000 Funded projects that have supported at least 5,500 Islington residents Continued to support a further 12 projects previously awarded funding by Islington Giving Raised more than 800,000 bringing our total raised to over 4million Enabled over 2,000 Islington residents and people who work in the borough to volunteer Highlights of 2015 Starting as a three-year campaign in 2010, Islington Giving became permanent in 2015 Islington Giving commissioned a major consultation with Islington s young people to root our programmes for young people in their ideas and priorities Islington Giving set up a new Mental Health Challenge Fund It s Me, It s You The success of Islington Giving has inspired thirteen new Givings across London. Income and Expenditure 2015 saw an increase in income which enabled an increase in expenditure on grants. Income from individuals and businesses is set to grow in Income Breakdown 2015 Coalition Income Trusts and Foundations Individuals Events Businesses 62,709 8% 11,996 1% 353,057 44% 320,000 40% 55,091 7% 231,818 37% 75,000 12% Grants awarded in ,000, 19% 199,690, 32% Tackling Poverty Confronting Isolation Investing in Children and Young People and Supporting Families Volunteering Total 802,852 Total 606,508 Plans for 2016 are to: Implement the new Islington Giving Plan framed around Confronting Isolation and Unlocking Islington, with action to Invest in Young People, Support Families, and Reach isolated people. Deliver It s Me, It s You grants of 140,000 over 18 months. Expand our work to invest in young people. Building on the Making the Most of Free Time consultation we will roll out the new Young Catalyst fund and work with others to offer more activities at times and places young people want them. Consolidate the BIG Alliance s permanent role in the borough following its start-up period supported by East London Business Alliance. Increase planned income to 731,000 with a focus on increasing support from individuals. This will increase grant expenditure in 2016 to 720,000. 1
2 Who we reached in 2015 In 2015 Islington Giving funded projects supported over 5,500 Islington residents and involved more than 2,200 volunteers. 96% of projects supported residents from across the whole borough. A small number focused on the specific wards of Caledonian, Holloway, Finsbury Park, Tollington and Hillrise. A breakdown by gender shows that 70% of those supported were women. This reflects a number of factors, including our focus on supporting families and single parents. The clubs bring older people out of themselves. You meet different people and do different things. 3 Residents supported by ethnicity Volunteering with the Islington Play Association allowed me the opportunity to practice my administrative and social interactive skills in a friendly, relaxed environment, without the anxieties that a paid job would have brought me. It helped me to see that I was capable and it gave me the confidence I needed to start jobhunting and socialising again. 4 Our Grants - Major Projects Tackling Poverty Help on Your Doorstep. Active Grants in 2015: 100,000 over 24 months, April 2013 April 2015 and 100,000 over 24 months, April 2015 April 2017 Help on your Doorstep s Connect programme has been supported by Islington Giving for five years. Islington Giving grants enable Connect staff to go beyond crisis support and work in depth with those most in need. Help on your Doorstep reaches some 1,500 Islington residents every year almost half of whom are supported through Connect s door to door outreach. Detailed real time reporting is made on age, issues, ethnicity and outcomes. The Parent House The Parent House. Active Grants in 2015: 20,000 over 12 months, April 2014 April 2015 and 20,000 over 12 months, April April 2016 With Islington Giving s current grant the Parent House has recruited and trained new parent outreach volunteers and parent mentors. Outcomes between June and December 2015 exceeded expectations with 16 parent outreach volunteers recruited and 160 new parents contacted through outreach. Islington Giving approved a new grant of 38,866 for the Parent House over 24 months, from April 2016 to April This will fund a dedicated worker for the Community Outreach Project and embed it as a core service. Confronting Isolation Canonbury Good Neighbours Scheme. Active Grants in 2015 : 62,724 over 24 months, January 2015 January 2017 and for Good Neighbours development and replication project 38,000 over 9 months, May 2015 February 2016 Islington Giving established the Good Neighbours Scheme on the New River Green estate, Canonbury in The Canonbury Good Neighbours Scheme has demonstrated what can be achieved by building on local assets, responding to residents needs, and opening opportunities. Islington Giving is partnering with Peabody Trust to replicate the scheme and has recently approved a new 3 year grant of 57,690, match funded by Peabody, to deliver a Good Neighbours Scheme in the Kings Cross area. Saturday Socials. Active Grants in 2015: 50,000 over 12 months, January 2015 January 2016 In 2015 the Saturday Socials programme delivered 48 social events at weekends throughout the year to engage isolated older residents in the community. Delivered through a partnership between All Change Arts, Cubitt Education, North London Cares and Age UK Islington and Arsenal in the Community, the 2015 programme reached 585 individuals with total attendances numbering over 1,350. A new grant of 70,000 for 2016 will see the programme develop further through 68 Saturday Socials events with ambitions to reach 700 individuals and grow attendances to over 1,600. Social Prescribing at Claremont. Active Grants in 2015 : 14,000 over 12 months, April 2015 April 2016 With Islington Giving s support, Claremont has been working with health professionals, particularly GPs, to identify isolated and vulnerable residents and connect them to people and activities. From April to December 2015 the project received 53 referrals, 28 of whom engaged with the programme through assessment and activities, with 12 completing the full programme and 8 continuing as regular weekly members. Claremont s monitoring shows a substantial change in well-being for these clients. Islington Giving has recently approved a new grant of 38,866 for Claremont s Social Prescribing project over 24 months, from April 2016 to April Investing in Children and Young People Family Saturdays. Active Grants in 2015: 41,566 over 12 months, October 2014 October 2015, and 65,180 over 12 months, October October 2016 Family Saturdays, delivered by Family Action, provide a consistent, intensive programme of activities and peer support for vulnerable and isolated families in North Islington with a particular focus on children with additional needs. Key to the approach is the aim of involving the whole family including fathers and mothers, as well as siblings. As well as the Saturday sessions, the programme team offers ongoing support on practical and personal issues at other times in the week. In 2015 the programme delivered 37 Saturday sessions benefiting 42 individuals: 14 parents and 28 children aged from 4 months 10 years. Mentoring Works. Active Grants in 2015: 57,000 over 12 months, October 2014 October 2015 and 57,000 over 12 months, October 2015 October 2016 The BIG Alliance Mentoring Works programme is a key offer from City businesses to the community. The scheme 4
5 provides opportunities for young people to visit the City, receive mentoring and develop and understanding of the world of work. Mentoring is being offered to Year 10 students in 6 schools in 2015/16, up from 4 in 2014/15. In addition, sixth form students in 3 institutions benefit from the scheme. Altogether 317 students participated during Islington Giving recently approved an increase in annual funding for the scheme from 57,000 to 100,000 which will extend the scheme to all secondary schools in Islington. Friday Night Out. Total Active Grants in 2015: 53,802 Arsenal in the Community and local charities, Global Generation and Another Way are unlocking opportunities for young people in two areas in the north and south of Islington. Combining football and food Friday Night Out encourages young people to meet others, be active and share in preparing and eating healthy meals. At King s Cross and Elthorne Park typically between 40 and 60 young people aged benefit each week during 2015 from the football sessions, the food project at Global Generation s Skip Garden, and cooking, film and other activities at Another Way. Volunteering BIG Alliance. Active Grants in 2015: 127,500 over 15 months, May 2014 July 2015 and 75,000 over 12 months, August 2015 August 2016 Through the BIG Alliance 13 City businesses give time, skills and funding to Islington organisations helping to build their capacity to make positive change for Islington residents. In 2015 the BIG Alliance, supported by East London Business Alliance (ELBA), raised income of 310, business volunteers were matched to 56 organisations, providing 1,673 volunteering hours. In addition there were 40 team challenges using 680 volunteers. 15 employment advisors were trained, 60 people supported with employability training and 25 people were supported into work. Macquarie s grant to Islington Giving is directed to the BIG Alliance. BIG s focus and impact will be strengthened by a new local reference group with members from businesses, Islington Giving, Macquarie Group, Islington Council and the Corporation of London. Our Grants Smaller Projects Supporting Families A programme of small grants totaling 41,566 over 12 months, July 2015 July 2016 This small grants programme funded 8 projects with a range of community organisations for summer holiday and weekend activities to help improve the lives of Islington families specifically those with children under 5. The projects aimed to provide fun, social, and low-cost activities enabling parents and children to spend time together. From drop-in stay and play, to outdoor workshops and holiday trips, over 120 sessions were offered through the programme reaching around 1,300 children, young people and adults. Confronting Isolation Foodcycle. Active Grant in 2015: 10,000 over 24 months, May May 2016 FoodCycle provides a volunteer led community cafe serving meals once a week for those at risk of food poverty, using surplus food from supermarkets. The service is provided in collaboration with Islington MIND where the café is run, adding value to the offer by enabling some of the Islington s most vulnerable residents access to a hot nutritious meal and opportunities to volunteer. In 2015 over 250 people benefited from Foodcycle s Islington community café. GoodGym. Active Grant in 2015: 10,000 over 24 months, May May 2016 GoodGym facilitates opportunities for people who want to get fit and help their local community. Funding was provided to enable GoodGym to establish itself in the borough and to become self-sustaining. Personal training is combined with volunteering activities for members, or runners. Matches are created between runners and isolated older people to provide ongoing befriending and support with household tasks. In 2015, GoodGym recruited 307 runners, with 14 runners paired to regularly support isolated older people. 7 missions were also facilitated for runners to carry out specific tasks. Thirteen community organisations have also benefited from one off activity based runs. 5
6 Fundraising and Communications Trusts and Foundations Fundraising Trusts and foundations with similar aims invest in Islington Giving. Partnerships with Henry Smith s Charity ( 300,000) and Arsenal Foundation ( 150,000) continued in Mitford Under Fives Centre s 275,000 donation continued to fund the supporting families programme. In November 2015 Richard Reeve s Foundation agreed funding of 172,000 over 4 years to develop and expand mentoring to all eleven secondary schools in Islington and City and Islington College. A donation was also received from Finsbury Educational Foundation ( 285,0005 over 5 years) to support the mentoring programme in The Islington Giving coalition funding provides c 320,000 a year towards the programme. Islington Giving Week Islington Giving Week returned in 2015 and was held from the 8-15 th June. The aim of the week was to raise the profile of Islington Giving and galvanise support from residents and businesses in the borough. 28 events were held around the borough. Over 8,500 was raised. The flagship events of the week were the Walk the Line Challenge which had its most successful year to date with over 100 participants and the Arsenal Five a Side Challenge Individuals Supporters 2015 saw an increase in the number of individuals giving regular donations to Islington Giving alongside additional support from sponsored events, running marathons and an increase in participants in the Walk the Line challenge. Business Supporters Islington Giving strengthened existing partnerships with businesses throughout Companies took part in the Walk the Line Challenge as part of their on-going fundraising activities for Islington Giving, including Hilton Islington, Daniel Watney LLP, Euromonitor International, Gelbergs, Macquarie Group and, Daziel and Pow, Organisations who are regular supporters of Islington Giving include U3A (University of the Third Age), Fredericks who hosted our Business Breakfast as part of Islington Giving Week and raised over 600 from their Islington Giving Cocktail and Currells who give a regular donation throughout the year and help to promote Islington Giving through advertising in their new publication The Linen Draper Communications Raising the profile of Islington Giving and need in the borough has been a priority. A new newsletter was launched in October 2015 and sent to over 2,500 individuals. We increased the number of advertisements across the borough, including pieces in the Linen Draper and the billboard outside the Business Design Centre. The Christmas billboard was the first time we detailed need in the borough. We are continuing to grow our followers on social media with 2,568 followers on Twitter and 291 likes on Facebook. 6
