See our web page at NEWS LETTER OF THE SUN LA KES ROA DRU NNE RS RV CL UB Roadrunner News October 2017 President s Message October 2017 First of all, I want to welcome back all those who have, to date, returned to the Sun Lakes area to enjoy the lingering summer heat. It sure makes our old bones feel better after returning from colder climates in general. The Board won t return in full force until the November meeting, but Lisa Wall, our new Treasurer, and I will hold down the fort until then. On a more somber note, I must record with great sadness, the passing of one of our stalwart members for many years past Leonard Meyer. Leonard and his wife Ruby, our newsletter editor, have conducted many rallies over the past and especially, to Quartzsite, which Leonard loved to orchestrate for many years. Leonard passed away on July 13, 2017 in Phoenix and was buried in Nebraska City, NE after a Celebration of Life ceremony on July 18 th. The Roadrunners Board sent flowers for the entire club to the service. A Moment of Silence will be observed at the October 10 th monthly Club meeting. We will miss you greatly Leonard. Our rallies kick off in November with a rally to nearby Florence on November 9 th -12th conducted by the Jim & Mary Ruddy and a corp of new wagonmaster recruits. I believe there are 20 or more rigs going and with golf and tours of historic downtown Florence, it should be a lot of fun. It s going to be a great new year. See you at the meeting on October 10 th! You President, Mike Skibo Editor s Comments: If any of the addresses or phone numbers listed in this newsletter are in error, please notify me. If anyone changes their address, please notify me, so you will continue to receive the news-letter. Thank you Ruby Meyer LMeyer829@aol.com Phone: or cell The deadline for the Nov. news letter is Nov. 1, 2017 Wagon Masters send me information as early as possible on your upcoming rallies for inclusion in the news letter. Hopefully the information will generate more interest in the rally. IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE. The newsletter is published monthly eight times a year, October through May, by the Sun Lakes RV Club. This club is a nonprofit organization established to provide opportunities for fraternization of Sun Lakes and surrounding area residents whom are interested in RV activities through club meetings and club campout rallies. It is not connected with any commercial or private business. An annual club membership of $20.00 (per person) entitles the members to participate in club social events, club campout rallies and subscription to the newsletter. 3 Oct Page 3 Sun Lakes Roadrunners RV Club Board Meeting Minutes May 4, 2017 Mike Skibo, President, brought the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. In attendance were Mike Skibo, President, Bill Hatcher, Vice President, Steve Holliger, Vice President Elect, Sally Walby, Acting Treasurer, Lisa Wall, Treasurer Elect and Pat Prekel, Secretary. The slide presentation for the upcoming meeting was reviewed. The Presidents message will cover the following items: 1. Mike reminded the board of future meeting dates which are October 3, 3PM, board meeting; October 10, monthly meeting; November 7, 3PM, board meeting; November 14, rally planning meeting. Suggested By-Law changes will be reviewed with the membership at the May 9 th meeting and voted on at the October meeting. 2. The fall rally dates were clarified: October 12 22, Rocky Point and November 9 12, Florence. 3. It is important that the membership become involved in the club especially by volunteering to be Wagon Masters. 4. A new equipment manager will be named Vice President Bill Hatcher will present Membership expectations when discussing upcoming rallies at the May meeting. Bill indicated that he and Steve Holliger, Vice President Elect, will be meeting in order to bring Steve up to speed concerning the November Rally Planning Meeting, Spring Fling and updates to the By-Laws. Acting Treasurer Sally Walby provided each person in attendance with a copy of the present budgets, one for Rallies and one for Administration. She also provided an Audit Description to each person present. Lisa Wall, Treasurer Elect was advised that it is the responsibility of the Treasurer to keep the club roster up to date. It was decided to add a column to the roster indicating the number of times a member has been a Wagon Master. Lisa will send an electronic copy of the updated roster once a month to all members in good standing. Committees: Membership Nothing discussed at the meeting. (After the meeting, numerous mail transmittals between Board members concluded that the Membership Form will be amended to include a paragraph on new member s participation expectations.)
October 2017 Page 4 Equipment There has been a volunteer to assume the responsibility of Chairperson of this committee Refreshments Mike Skibo will announce that there will be no refreshments at the October meeting if a volunteer for Chairperson of this committee does not come forward. New business It is necessary to make it a responsibility of each member to act as a Wagon Master. Several other RV organizations already do this. After much discussion it was decided that each member must volunteer to be a Wagon Master by the end of their third year of membership in order to remain a member in good standing. To accomplish this it will be necessary to revise the Wagon Master Procedure document and The By-Laws. The Membership Form will also be revised in order to make prospective members aware of this club participation expectation. It was also suggested that the club might provide Wagon Master training and make the Wagon Master Procedure document available for review at each meeting. (After the meeting, continued discussions of the Board concluded that new members, to be active participants, will be expected to either become an Officer, a Committee Chair or a Wagon Master by the conclusion of their third year of membership.) The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 AM. Respectfully submitted, Pat Prekel, Secretary
Oct Page 5 Roadrunners Club Meeting Minutes May 9, 2017 President Mike Skibo opened the meeting at 6:58 PM by introducing the Club Officers. Present were Mike Skibo, President, Bill Hatcher, Vice President, Sally Walby, Acting Treasurer and Pat Prekel, Secretary. Bert Geiger, Treasurer was not in attendance. Mike then reviewed the Mission Statement for the Sun Lakes Roadrunners RV Club. In the Presidents message, Mike reported that Bob Edmunds volunteered to be the new Equipment Manager. Volunteers to chair the Refreshment Committee are still needed. Mike also reminded everyone that the Club depends on volunteers to be Wagon Masters, Committee Chairs and Officers. Volunteers are what keep an organization like this functioning as intended. Vice Presidents Report Bill Hatcher reminded the membership that it is important to participate in leading Rallies since that is one of the main purposes of our Club. Still looking for a possible October Rally. Rally Reports Lake Powell, Mike Skibo - There were 35 people who attended this rally which included tours of the Antelope Canyon Slot Cave, a boat trip to the Rainbow Bridge, a Colorado River raft ride, golf and the Into the Grand dinner theater which featured American Indian food and Navajo dancing for entertainment. The tour of the Glen Canyon Dam was canceled due to the elevator being inoperable. Rocky Point, Jim Clark This is a loosely planned rally starting May 11 th and will last for a week to ten days. The usual suspects will be enjoying camping on the beach and some good food. Remember if you are attending to purchase Mexican vehicle insurance since most US companies don t cover Mexico. Exit Rally, Sally Walby There are three main stops on this Rally, Santa Barbara (near Solvang and Ventura), Oceano (adjacent to Pismo Beach) and Morro Bay. There are 11 rigs attending this Rally. Florence, Mary Ruddy Mary reported that they have four couples who have not yet been Wagon Masters who volunteered to help with this rally. This is a three night rally starting November 9 th and returning home November 12 th. Mary had a sign-up sheet available so they could get an idea of who is interested in this rally and so far it looks like 31 rigs will be attending. The Wagon Masters have started getting the plans in order and, at this point, they include dinner and wine tasting at a winery and a tour of St. Anthony s Monastery which houses Greek Monks who raise olives. Mary did report that the store at the Prison is no longer open. Watch for s this summer instructing when and where a deposit should be sent. Rally and Event Planning Mike reviewed the possible Rallies planned for next season. So far we have 1. March 2018 Arches NP Wagon Masters, Jarvi and volunteers 2. April 2018 Camp Verde Wagon Masters, Skibo and Bergmann 3. May 2018 (late) Ruidoso Exit Rally Wagon Masters, Walby and Prekel 4. October 2018 Albuquerque, NM, balloon fiesta, need Wagon Masters We still need destinations and Wagon Masters for January, February, possibly early May and November, Some suggestions for destinations are Durango, CO, Santa Fe, NM, White Tank Mountains, AZ, Branson, MO, Las Vegas, NV, Temecula, CA, Gallup, NM, Palm Springs, CA, Tubac, AZ, Kitt Peak, AZ. Bill Hatcher reminded the members that there is a collection of past rally information in the storage unit. (Cont.next page)
Oct Page 6 Treasurer s Report Sally Walby reported that the Administrative budget covers the operations of the club while the Rally budget is a stand- alone entity covering rally income and expenses. The Administrative budget slide showed the budgeted and actual costs. The amount budgeted for the Spring Fling has been increased to $ for next year. The Rally budget slide showed that all Rallies have been closed out except the Exit Rally. Committee Reports: Membership - The Committee awarded rally bars to Wagon Masters as follows: 1. Red Bars (for comple ng first rally) went to Bob and Mary Figgis Barb Clark reported that this is the first meeting this season that we had no new members. Newsletter - Ruby Meyer reported that she will forward messages to the membership this summer if you send one to her. Website Glenn Smith, Webmaster, was not present. Equipment Greg Zarnick was not present. Bob Edmunds, new Equipment Manager, was introduced. He was advised that Mike Skibo has a key to the storage unit and that Greg will be here during the summer and will still have a key. Refreshments Pat Prekel thanked the volunteers who supplied refreshments for the meeting. She also reminded the members that new volunteers to act as Committee Chairs will be needed for next season. New Business The discussion covered the need for members to be active participants in the Club. It may be necessary to make some changes to the By-laws, add wording to the Membership Application and determine a clear definition of Active Participant which could include volunteering to be Wagon Masters, Committee Chairs or Officers. These items will be discussed further at the October meeting. Section 4 of the By-Laws will be updated to state that the Treasurer will be responsible for keeping an up to date Roster and providing it to the membership monthly. Based on discussions that members feel that all Wagon Masters participate equally in planning and running a Rally, reference to Co-Wagon Masters will need to be removed from the Wagon Master Planning Procedure document. TailTwister A few folks were not wearing their name tags so they donated. The only thing that didn t work so well at the Lake Powell Rally was someone s toilet, a simple thing but very important. It was a simple fix too, once they found the correct switch. But the Pinhead Award went to none other than our fearless Leader and most recent Wagon Master for leading the group on a wild goose chase that included several U-turns while trying to get to the Antelope Canyon. Pot O Gold Jim Clark gave out two $20 and two $17 prizes. Announcements If you need a Roadrunners window logo please see Bob Stephens. The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 PM Respectfully submitted, Pat Prekel, Secretary
October 2017 Page 7 After the meeting there were members who talked to Mike about Wagon Master training or being Wagon Masters for a Rally. Also, Susan Hatcher and Debbie Holliger volunteered to be Co-Chairs of the Refreshment Committee for next season. Additionally, Janis Snowden and Ken and Donna Bergmann offered to assist with refreshments so they should be considered as alternates. Based on the number of volunteers coming forward after the meeting and after much discussion amongst the present and future Board, it was determined that we will hold off on inclusion of sentences in the By-Laws which talk about Active Participation. Once we have our November Rally planning meeting and see how many members step forward, we may need to visit this subject again.
Website Mike Skibo suggested that the fate of the website should be decided in the Fall. Equipment There has been a volunteer to assume the responsibility of Chairperson of this committee Refreshments Mike Skibo will announce that there will be no refreshments at the October meeting if a volunteer for Chairperson of this committee does not come forward. New business It is necessary to make it a responsibility of each member to act as a Wagon Master. Several other RV organizations already do this.
