Field Day is just a little over 2-months away! This is going to be a little more of a Field Day than most of you have seen in a while! If you have friends who are hams or thinking of becoming hams, you'll want to invite them down! There is a reason why Field Day is the #1 Amateur Radio Operating Event in the Country...you'll want to be a part of it! We'll be discussing Field Day at our next meeting and our June Program will be all about Field Day! New Repeater Antenna! As most of you are aware, the City of Whittier has asked us to relocate our repeater antenna from its current location on the water tank to the new tower. The Board has discussed the purchase of a new antenna and will give the OK to spend the money as soon as the City tells us where we can put it on the tower. I will be meeting with Rod Hall or whomever he directs me to, to secure the necessary authorization to get the new antenna installed. When that day comes, we will be inviting club members to come help/watch/document. Stay tuned! Finally, our guest speaker for this month will be our friend Arnie Shatz, N6HC. He just returned from another exciting DXpedition to FT5ZM; AMSTERDAM ISLAND... Come hear how they were able to pull off this trip to the middle of the Indian Ocean! Advertisements are welcomed V O L U M E 3 9, N O. 4 Rio Hondo Amateur Radio Club Minutes of March 10, 2014 The Club s Birthday Party was officially called to order at 7:30pm by Dino Darling (KX6D). Dino thanked everyone for attending the Clubs 38th Birthday Party. A Brief History of the Club was given by Paul In. After words there were a few announcements: Dave (K6CJZ) reminded everyone there is a 5K walk for the Shelters Right Hand coming up the morning of April 26th with a meeting location to be announced. For more information on Volunteering please Contact Dave at david.haring2@verizon.net. Vi also added input, the walk is for abused Woman and Children, to help raise money and to bring awareness to the Community. Dave also spoke about the Emergency Communications for the city of Whittier, he mentioned there still is a need for Volunteers for the City of Whittier. He said there have been seven people who have gone through the process and he is awaiting the results of that. But there still is a need for more members of the Club to submit their applications to him or to the City. Vi reported she had money left over from the Ham Radio Class. She donated the $45 to the Club. The class itself cost $135. She also informed the club on the Status of Don, they are living out at Morningside. Don is to the point where he needs 24hrs care and he is receiving it. They have a lot of activities for him and are taking great care of him. Vi really likes the food and the facilities there. Dino mentioned field day again. Field day is at the end of the month in June. He would like to see a minimum of four stations on the air. A location is still being worked out, that will be figured out very soon. If anyone would like to set up a Station, but does not have the equipment feel free to contact Dino and see what he has. One last thing from Vi, she mentioned the DX Convention is going to be in Visalia at the Convention Center is coming up next month. Bill Reported the Club has Checking has $4, with $45 coming in from the class and the Savings has $1, Adjournment, the meeting ended at 8:20pm. 3 1 2 A P R I L V O L U M E 3 9, N O. 4 RHARC BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING - MARCH 31, 2014 The meeting was called to order at 7:10 P.M. by President Dino Darling (KX6D) at the IHOP Restaurant on Washington Blvd. The following members were at the meeting: Russ Alpern (KI6ZMX), Bill Leslie (WA6POK), Dave Haring (K6CJZ), Don Olejnik (W6KAT), Jacqueline Darling (K6RIX) and Paul In (KI6EL). Board Reports: (1) Dino indicated that a DXpedition by Arnie Shatz (N6HC) is in the works for a Club program. (2) Secretary Donald Ocampo has been working nights and requested Paul to take the minutes for the meetings. (3) Bill gave his treasurer's report with the checking account at $4, and the savings account at $1, He also indicated that he spent four days in the hospital due to a heart attack but has recovered sufficiently to attend the meeting. Paul presented a $42.99 bill to the Board for reimbursement of the ice cream cake he had purchased for the Club's birthday party held earlier this month. Dino made a motion which passed unanimously for the reimbursement and Bill wrote a check. The City of Whittier has also sent correspondence indicating that the Club has not paid the repeater site rental fee for 2006, 2013 and Bill will check the treasurer's checkbook if any of these rentals have been paid. The rental for 2014 amounts to $78.51 and will be paid. Dino suggested that a balance ledger be kept by Bill so that expenses and income can be easily viewed by the Board. Committee Reports: (1) Paul reported that a number of members have not paid their 2014 dues. He will check on the distribution of the monthly newsletter with Secretary Donald Ocampo (KJ6RXV) to see if all the members have been receiving it. He will send out the membership renewal form. He also reported on the Technician License class training which will be held in May possibly for the U.S. Forestry Department. They have indicated a desire to get their amateur radio licenses as reported by Vi Barrett (W6CBA). (2) Dave reported that a number of members have signed up with Whittier Disaster Communications and a meeting will be scheduled with the coordinator soon. The recent earthquake is a wakeup call and we need more participants for the City. Dave also needs volunteers along the route of the 5K walk/run sponsored by the Shelters for Abused Women and Children on April 26. Old Business: (1) There was a lengthy discussion of the repeater site with the proposal of an antenna upgrade to a 4-dipole with DIN connectors that will cost $ The antenna will provide better coverage as determined by calculations from the supplier. (2) Dino discussed the proposed field day site at the Sierra Vista High School located between Painter and Greenleaf Avenues. It is an ideal site for setting up antennas in a line that will be broadside to the northeast since the field is oriented in a northwest southeast line. The field is also fenced with parking on the outside. Dino will be requesting a rider from Hayes Insurance to provide liability coverage naming the school district as a second insured. New Business: (1) The Club's Wednesday night net will have a temporary change in Net Control Operators. Paul will be handling the second week of the month and Bill asked to be relieved as the fourth week operator due to church activities. Paul will ask Joe Provenza (W6UPN) if he will take the 4th Wednesday of the month. (2) The next Board meeting will be on April 28, 2014, 7 P.M. at the same location. Adjournment: There were no further business or announcements and the meeting was adjourned on the motion by Don with a second from Bill at 8:15 P.M. 5 A P R I L V O L U M E 3 9, N O. 4 Past Presidents Message First: If you are not aware there is an event that we handle communications for this month. It is the 5k walk/run for "The Shelters Right Hand". This is an organization that helps fund a women's shelter in the City of Whittier. The more we have sign up to help at this event the easier it will be for all who are helping. I encourage all to let me know at the April meeting of their interest and availability to take part in this event. It will be held on April 26. Our start time will be 7:30am. I am still working on the location for us all to meet. Assignments will be handed out at that time and place. Remember this is a good way to give back to the community and a good way to make "amateur radio" known to the community. Second: A very important item is our ability to serve the City of Whittier in an emergency. We should all be aware of how close we came to an emergency on 4/28. This event left many of us picking things up that are not normally on the floor. If you watched any of the news coverage you should be well aware of how significant this event was, even though it was a small event. It should remind us all that we have no way of knowing when a much larger event may occur, nor do we know where that event may take place. We do know that we will be in the midst of an emergency at some time in the future (that time could be at any second, minute, hour, day, week, month or year). Are we ready? Is your radio charged? Do you have an emergency kit? Do you have an emergency antenna? These are just a few of the questions you should not only be asking yourself but also making plans to have positive answers to address these issues. These questions also need to be addressed by the club as a whole and to make sure we can serve the community of Whittier in a positive and effective manner, when the time comes for action.
