As mentioned in last months newsletter, the Tehachapi Amateur Radio Association will be hosting a very important seminar for those that are interested in taking on an active role in assisting with relaying or communicating important messages during local or national emergencies. Our special guest and presenter, via Skype, will be Dr. Kate Hutton. Dr. Hutton was the staff seismologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. She has retired from CalTech, however, you might remember seeing her on TV as she talked about earthquakes. What you may not know is that Dr. Hutton is a licensed amateur radio operator. Her call sign is K6HTN and she is currently the Section Traffic Manager for the Los Angeles Section of the NTS. Please join us for this special event. It really is a simple question. Unfortunately, the answer is not so simple. I commonly get answers that are really in the form of excuses. Sort Of, We ve talked about it,, We re working on it and You worry too much are not uncommon answers. YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED. A disaster can take many forms. The two I worry about the most are earthquakes and fires. On Thursday, October 19 th at 10:19am, will be The Great California Shake Out. It is an annual event held throughout the state of California and 2017 represents its 9 th year. As of this writing, 9.8 million people have already registered to participate. Participation can be on an individual basis, family, organization, business or community level. It is simply an opportunity for people to practice how to Drop, Cover and Hold On. For Ham Radio operators they actually ask the question: Will you be utilizing ham radio? At what frequency will you be broadcasting? If you are in the ham radio community, the real question is, what will YOU be doing? What can you organize for your community? We ask that everyone interested in participating in the ShakeOut use every tool available to them to get the word out

Even if this information comes too late to be an active participant at home, Church, work or your various organizations, take moment to observe and begin your preparations for and earthquake (or any disaster) and participate next year. Annual Christmas Party (2017) Yes, the holidays are quickly approaching and planning our next Christmas Party has moved up on our checklist of Things to Do! Last years party was held at Gracian s Grill on Tehachapi Blvd. Most members in attendance at the club meeting, earlier this month, expressed what a great time they had and that they thought the Gracian s was a good venue. While Gracian s is on the top of the list we are open to other suggestions and ideas for the party. Your input is important and we want to hear from you. Please contact any of the Board members listed below in this newsletter with what you would like to see done for this year s party. Suggest a location, a menu, games or gift exchange. What would you like to see in this year s raffle? Can you help gather some prizes or donations for the raffle? Let s plan now to make this year s party one to remember. We want to see everyone there and look forward to creating a great memory for you. Pack-a-Mania 2017 Tehachapi s own Cub Scout Pack 3 will be participating in a local event on November 11 th at the Kern County Fairgrounds. Pack-a-Mania is a campout for young scouts from 1 st grade through 5 th grade. Tehachapi s Pack 3 has been invited again to participate in the annual event and have been asked to provide an activity. Last year Pack 3 invited our club to provide a demonstration of Amateur Radio and we have been invited back again this year. Last years demonstration was very successful and popular with the scouts and their families. Children and their parents made repeated trips to our display and asked lots of questions and loved getting on the radio. Last years program was led by Phil Dolber, W6WBT, and he put together quite a show. Each scout participated in a brief discussion on amateur radio. After completing that session, they were directed to one of several stations to prepare to get on the air. We had radios covering 70cm, 2-meters, 20-meters and 40-meters. We also had specialized vans provided by Andy Gutierrez, K6BVS and Kevin Reilly, K6KTR. This year we will be providing a similar program for them. We will need help from both sides of the fence (as it were). We will have several stations set up for the scouts at the fairgrounds, however, we will also need to have radio operators available throughout the day operating from home or mobile to help make sure that every participant makes a contact. We will publish more information, in a separate communication or , as we complete our preparations for this event.
