A Letter From The President Let me begin by thanking the membership for your positive response to our yearend appeal for contributions. Your combined generosity exceeded last year s effort and is most needed and appreciated. Thank You So Much! The 33rd Annual Christmas Home Tour was a wonderful experience for all those who attended. Despite the threatening weather, we had good attendance and I believe the dedicated volunteer effort, by so many, was rewarded with positive feed back from the attendees, a sense of accomplishment and good financial returns for the cause. The Eighth Annual Ball in the Burg was a hands down great party. Lead by Patrick Hagerich for the second time, his seasoned team of veteran volunteers, together with the Petersburg Country Club staff put on a wonderful event that was enjoyed by all who came out for the camaraderie, great food, drink, music, dancing, auctions and the opportunity to support HPF. If you couldn t make it, we hope to see you next year! The Peter Jones Trading Station is nearing completion of the stabilization and site work intended to provide general and controlled public access. The History committee has begun work on planning and financing the educational phase designed to Tell the Story. With the scope of work established, HPF board member, Pam Roberts is drafting a grant request to raise money for this important effort to share the history of this early structure with those who visit the site. We welcome restricted donations to help us tell the story and continue as stewards of this historically significant site. The Board of Trustees has decided to expand membership to include several free youth and young adult membership programs. We hope to reach out to the next generation of potential preservationist and involve them in the long-term efforts required to continue our mission into the future. In addition we intend to create a Military membership level that is discounted in consideration of their service to our country and also their community service on behalf of HPF. Please share these initiatives with anyone who may be interested in joining HPF in one of these new membership categories. I am pleased to advise that your Board of Trustees has been working throughout the year on issues and opportunities spawned initially by our Strategic Plan review at the beginning of the year. I hope this effort will result in positive initiatives for organizational change in the year ahead. Continued on page 2

2 MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 President s Message Continued The Board believes these proposed changes will strengthen our ability to accomplish our mission: to lead the preservation and restoration of Petersburg s historic architecture and neighborhoods and to tell their story. I look forward to sharing the specifics of these initiatives as soon as they are finalized. This is my last letter as your President for the year. I remain deeply concerned about the negative cash flow we have experienced in our Operations. I do however believe we built a foundation in Board perception, attitude and organization this year to effectively address this financial issue next year. I am very pleased with what the current Board has accomplished this year as measured by our Strategic Plan commitments. In closing I would like to say that it has been a pleasure serving HPF as your President. Robert C. White Upcoming Events April 10: We hope to see many of our members and friends on Sunday, April 10th at St. Paul s Episcopal Church for the Annual Membership Meeting. We look forward to honoring the preservation award recipients and hearing our guest speaker Mrs. Tempy Barbru. Watch for your invitation in the mail soon! May is Membership Renewal Month. Please continue your membership support in fiscal year You can return your contribution in the envelope that will be provided with the request or renew online at our website. May is the target month for opening the Peter Jones Trading Post to the public. We are seeking donations now for lighting and signage, but are hopeful that the site will be ready for visitors this spring/summer. June 2: History of Horses in Petersburg The History Committee has a fun and informative program planned for you. Topics will include drayage, racing, dressage, agricultural and hunting horses through the years in Petersburg. This program will be held at St. Paul s Episcopal Church at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend. September: HPF Members Only Bus Trip Date to be announced for another fun road trip. This fall we will travel to Smithfield, Virginia for a full day of sightseeing. A small fee will be charged this time to help with expenses.

3 MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER Peter Jones Trading Post Project Progress on the Peter Jones Trading Post A joint community revitalization project by Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc, & The Petersburg Foundation. We hope to complete this project in May PAGE 3

4 MARCH 2011 NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 Eighth Annual Ball in the Burg We had lots of fun with the circus theme at the Country Club of Petersburg for the Eighth Annual Ball in the Burg on February 26th. Clowns, ringmasters and even a bearded lady enjoyed fantastic music by Horizon, great auction items including a stunning platinum and 1 carat diamond ring, a wine party at the McIlwaine House and a waterfront vacation get away. Darrell Olgers served as auctioneer again this year and committee chairman, Patrick Hagerich was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. This fundraiser is one of the ways HPF raises awareness of Petersburg s 18th and 19th century architecture and our efforts to preserve this irreplaceable resource. The proceeds from the Ball in the Burg help to sustain our operations. We work hard to bring you a first class event and appreciate your support.
