EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRIES Limited geographic area Allow a guest to visit 1X per month Give them 3 days of meals May even make sure they don t double dip 2 things to say to this group
LETS DO THE MATH Not trying to become a convenience store Or make people dependent on pantries 125,220 people who are food insecure Missing 22,106,600 meals per year That s 176 meals per person per year 14.7 meals per month, not 90 1 week of meals 2X per month would end hunger
A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER On average Not everyone will be able to do this There is enough food Ending hunger is a completely realistic goal We ll have to do things differently
ENDING HUNGER IN IOWA & ILLINOIS It is the only goal we could embrace We re here to help ReThink Hunger More details throughout the rest of today
What is ReThink Hunger Plan to build a strategic and efficient system Incentivizing our partner agencies to grow Aligning a shared mission to end hunger in eastern Iowa and western Illinois Achieving goals through the strength of our network
Why Do We Need to ReThink Hunger? In million meals were provided but this totaled half of the 22 million meal gap needed to eliminate hunger Significant shift in food donations creating a trend towards perishable products Cuts in USDA TEFAP commodities and SNAP benefits in recent years A network of partner agencies where 29% of our partners distributed 80% of the food Move to a new facility and expanded operations
Goals of ReThink Hunger Increase availability and access to food for those in need Improve the capacity of the network to handle and distribute large quantities of nutritious and perishable food Engage in SNAP outreach to ensure that guests are receiving supplemental benefits Collaboration with the community to address the root causes of hunger
Partner Agencies by County
Meal Gap by County
Breakout of Percentage of Meal Gap Provided
IMPORTANT NOTE At the conference, we only began a conversation about what it would mean to ReThink Hunger in order to achieve the goal of literally ending hunger in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. This was only the beginning. The guidelines on the next page are not anything that is being implemented at this time, but the beginning of a conversation that will incorporate your feedback from the conference and beyond as to how we can best work together to achieve this goal. Please note that this is only a first draft, nothing is being implemented at this time, and this was only presented to begin the conversation. We d love to hear your thoughts.
