Background Nigeria is one of the highest contributor to the global burden of maternal and infant mortality. MMR= 814 per 100,000 live births (WHO, 2015) Under five MR =2,300 on daily basis This is the major reason for my choice of this particular pressing and challenging topic. Healthcare in Nigeria is bedeviled with so many challenges with the low income earners as the people with most affected. Rural areas where farmers dwell are also the most affected.
Challenges Addressed Strong cultural factors High rate of illiteracy Socio-economic factors Poor health seeking behaviour Physical barriers to access of healthcare services Poor government policies
Project Approach Community Advocacy Sensitization Mass mobilization Town Hall and Village Square meetings Community Opinion leaders Text messages (reached about 350 women both pregnant and nursing mothers) House to house visits Medical Outreaches
Community meetings
Medical Outreach
Any volunteers? Share in the chat or raise your hand to speak about updates in your health improvement work 28

34 Topics we re exploring Addressing the opioid epidemic Opioid misuse and abuse have reached epidemic levels Local, state, federal governments taking action 100 Million Healthier Lives initiative & partnership with Surgeon General High potential for students across disciplines to have impact Actions could include: advocacy, awareness-raising, education, training, community and family engagement, etc.
Topics we re exploring 35 Addressing the opioid epidemic Advancing health equity Disparities across race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and gender exist in infant mortality rates, cardiovascular disease, deaths from certain cancers, and many other conditions We must address health inequity if we seek to improve health outcomes and if we are invested in a world where all can participate, prosper, and reach their full potential (Policy Link, Equity Manifesto)
36 Topics we re exploring Addressing the opioid epidemic Advancing health equity Moving health care upstream An upstreamist is a health professional capable of seeing the social and environmental factors that drive health in individuals and communities Moving care upstream goes to the source of the larger population problem Examples of upstreamist projects could include addressing housing insecurity, lack of access to healthy foods, transportation needs, etc
