11 Orchids we should all grow by Roy Krueger CYCNODES WINE DELGHT Unlike most orchids those in the Catasetinae group produce separate male and female flowers. The male has a strong triggering mechanism that ejects pollonia packets when n contact with a pollinator. The pollen is then carried to a female flower where pollination is completed. This group of orchids include Catasetum, Clowesia, Cycnoches, Mormodes and their hybrids and crosses. Most of them originate in Central and South America. They are distinguished by plump ovoid pseudobulbs topped with a pleated leaf or leaves. The male flower is usually more colorful and larger to attract pollinators. The female flower is typically hooded and usually greenish or yellow. Male flowers usually form in lower light conditions. They are more common in nursery grown plants. The genus Cycnodes is a hybrid cross of Marmodes and Cycnoches. The plant shown above is a male flower of Cycnodes Wine Delight. It is a primary hybrid of Cycnoches lehmannii crossed with Marmodes sinuata. Wine Delight is one of the typical hermaphroditic plants, growing both male and female flowers on the same plant depending on the available light level. It is primary hybrid cross of Cyc. lehmannii and Morm. sinuata. It was registered in 1980 and has many different color forms. Most are wine colored, from burgundies to blush reds. This form is quite unusual in that it is one of the few yellow forms of the cross. These plants should be gown warm (65-85) night temperatures in summer in bright but not direct light. Lower levels of light will produce male flowers while higher light will result in female flowers. They grow best in baskets in loose medium that is well drained. They require heavy watering and fertilizing when in active growth. Flower spikes emerge from the base or the sides of the plump pseudobulbs at the end of the growing season when the leaves have yellowed or dropped off. They are long lasting, perhaps three to four weeks. The spikes are pendulous and the pot often needs to be set on a higher platform to properly display the blooms. I often set a four inch pot on top of a six inch pot that has been turned upside down When the foliage drops, stop watering the plant. After flowering, many growers remove the pseudobulb from the medium and store where they will not get wet and rot. Re-pot as soon as new growth and roots emerge. Do not water again until new growth is about two inches tall. Do not get water in the core of the new growth to prevent rotting. I usually divide these plants when they reach 7-8 pseudobulbs. Small plants will produce one pseudobulb each year. Mature plants may produce two or more, sometimes even off of a back bulb.

12 Silent Auction Guidelines: We will limit the total number of plants to 4 or 5 per month By the 20th of the month, prior to the upcoming meeting, a member will a request to Denny Pavlock (dpavlock@gmail.com) with the number of plants they wish to bring. Include the name of the plant, the approximate number of pseudo bulbs, size of the pot, basket or mount or that it is a bare root. If you have a jpeg picture of the flower, please include with your request. o If you do not have pic, SOS will provide one, if plant is not blooming Plants must be clean with no scale, thrips, etc. If desired, specify the minimum price you will accept for each plant. If desired, specify an ebay type Buy-It-Now amount for each plant so that a member may instantly purchase the plant. o Note: The plant will then immediately be removed from the Silent Auction Table To confirm your inclusion in the Silent Auction, Denny will send you, the member, a Silent Auction Form. The seller will receive 75% and the SOS will receive 25% of the sale s price. o Member will receive the total amount of the sale and is responsible for returning 25% (cash or check) plus the Silent Auction Form to the SOS Treasurer at the conclusion of the meeting.
