8 ORCHIDS WE SHOULD ALL GROW BLC. LAKE MURRAY 'MENDENHALL' Those of you who regularly follow my ramblings know that there does not exist a big red Cattleya that I do not absolutely need in my collection. When one is lucky enough to find such a plant just two generations removed from the great big Catt breeder, Norman's Bay, there is no question-buy IT! Such a plant is BLC. Lake Murray, a cross of C. Oconee x C. Catawba. C. Oconee, of course, is a first generation offspring of Norman's Bay. Lake Murray was made by Carter & Holmes and registered in It was awarded just one time by AOS, an AM/AOS in 1991 when it was shown with just two flowers, each 15.5 cm (approximately 5 ) across. The variety was named Mendenhall, the variety shown above. I acquired this plant about 5 years ago with about 10 pseudobulbs. Today it has over 40 pseudobulbs. When it last bloomed, it had 24 flowers on 8 inflorescence. Each flower measured 6-61/2 across. The color is deep red/purple with gold veins in a garnet lip that radiate out into gold overcasts on the inner petal. The flowers are long lasting, remaining in bloom over 3 weeks during the heat of summer. Grow Lake Murray in bright indirect light in warm to hot conditions. I grow the one shown on the west screen of my pool cage, high up on the side. Ideal humidity is 50-60% year around. Water thoroughly, but be sure to allow mature plants to dry thoroughly before watering again. I fertilize weekly with with Cal Mag spring until fall. In fall, I switch to Potassium Nitrate ( ) and Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom salts) alternated with every other week. In about November, I cut the rate from 1 TBS/gallon to 1 TSP/gallon. Lake Murray is fairly disease resistant. I use a systemic fungicide program as well as a systemic insecticide program just as I do on most other uni foliate Catts. Page8
