breathe ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe.

In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to infections, extensive lung damage and, eventually, respiratory failure.

4 breathe ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to infections, extensive lung damage and, eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients. CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION WHY SUPPORT THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION? We are making so much progress in the fight against cystic fibrosis. In 1955, when the Foundation was founded, children with CF rarely lived long enough to attend elementary school. Today, the median predicted age of survival is more than 40 and people with CF are achieving milestones like attending college, getting married and having children goals that used to seem impossible. This is due in large part to the work of the Foundation and the amazing CF community, but we don t want to just treat CF, we want to end it. We are working every day to build on this incredible momentum, and we won t stop until we have achieved normal life spans and have a cure for 100% of people with CF.

Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function. To further help reduce the risk of cross-infection, the Foundation s attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to an indoor Foundation-sponsored event at a specific time. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has unrestricted financial reserves of about 13 times its budgeted annual expenses, following a one-time royalty sale in These funds, along with the public s continuing support, are needed to help accelerate our efforts to pursue a lifelong cure for this fatal disease, develop life-saving new therapies and help all people with CF live full, productive lives.
