"Make Dreams Real" RI President DK Lee "Rotary Does it!" Club President Rich Spingarn RICH'S BLOG by Richard Spingarn President Rich has started a blog. This week Rich writes about singing at our meetings TODAY'S PROGRAM: Ithaca Car Share Joanne Lamoureux introduced today's speaker, Jennifer Dotson, Executive Director of Ithaca Car Share. Jennifer told us of the amazing success, so far, of this new program which gives 24/7 access to a fleet of cars and trucks for those people who don't need a car regularly. It is a membership organization, and membership gives you a key fob which will unlock the car you have reserved in advance, after which you can use the car for whatever you need and return it to the same parking space (of which there are several around town). Some interesting facts: The average car spends 95% o f its time parked. It costs an average of $8,000 a year to own, maintain, insure and fuel a car; however much (or little) it is used. This (car-sharing) is a growing movement throughout the country and represents a shift in thinking which benefits the individual pocketbook as well as the environment. The local group has a membership plan for those who use a car fairly regularly as well as a plan for the person who only needs a car occasionally. They are now working on a business plan, as well. ROTARY DOES IT! by Richard Spingarn Rotary Does It! - Episode 8: Service President Rich started episode 8 by asking the membership "What is the most important thing Rotary does?" The answer is Service, of course. Such was not the case when Rotary was originally founded; but the idea of service came shortly thereafter. A member of the original Chicago Rotary Club asked a fellow named Don Carter to join. Carter wanted to know the objectives of Rotary, which at that time were 1) Promotion of business interests among members and 2) Fellowship. Carter, a Patent Attorney, sneered and said he was not interested in joining a club with such insular motives, but he said that such a club would have great possibilities if it could do something to benefit people other than its own members. At that, his sponsor invited him to join and propose an amendment to the Rotary Constitution.&nbs p; At a club meeting shortly thereafter the club overwhelmingly adopted a simple and profound addition encompassing community service. This was adopted by all future Rotary clubs and changed the feel of Rotary forever. Ann, an RN, received her bachelor degree from NazarethCollege in Rochester and her MS from the University of Phoenix and has some fourteen years hospice experience. She was most recently affiliated with Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota, Florida and decided to return to Upstate New York to be close to family and to 'experience the seasons again.' She and per partner of 20 years have an 18 month old daughter. She loves to scuba dive, bake and music of all kinds!

On August 27 th, Rotary will be meeting at Cass Park - picnic and entertainment at the Pavilion near the Children s Garden. 2. President Rich thanked Dale Flinn and Mike Brown for taking photographs for the roster. They will also be set up at future meetings that will be announced in the near future. It is up to you whether you want to dress specially for the occasion. 3. Our exchange students will be arriving soon. Fern from Thailand will be arriving at the Ithaca Airport on August 22, at 10:55PM and Barbara from Poland is coming on August 24th. Her flight arrives in Ithaca at 6:03 PM. Please come if you can to greet and welcome our new exchange students. 4. George Ferrari reported on August's work of the Membership Committee, and encouraged all to introduce a new member. He noted that the first time a prospective member comes to lunch, the club will pay; and when the new member is introduced, the sponsor receives a coupon for a free lunch, which can be used in a variety of ways, including giving to the new member to encourage them to bring in another. The sponsor will also receive a Sponsor Pin and have a $100 donation made to The Rotary Foundation in their name. Results of Eradicate Polio Fundraiser 6/14/08 Bettsie Park introduced her business partner Ken Jupiter and the two of them reported on the success of the day held recently when some downtown merchants donated 10% of their proceeds to the Polio Plus Challenge. These merchants included 15 Steps, Ten Thousand Villages, Habitat, The Goat Boy and Fibers. They then presented a symbolic check
