3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement Christian Social Services is a non-profit organization of committed Christians, along with others, who share a similar vision. We work in unity to help those in need, especially individuals and families in crisis or emergency situations. Through our programs of assistance, we strive to exemplify the Christian example of love, compassion, dignity, and empathy. We minister in a spirit of respect for the people and culture of Appalachia. We encourage individuals to assist, nurture, educate, and learn from one another. All of this is done in Christian love. Background Statement In 1964, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) was established to address the pressing needs of the Appalachian region. As part of this initiative, the Glenmary Sisters, a group of Catholic sisters from Cincinnati, Ohio, began a small eastern Kentucky outreach for the poor in This particular effort marked the beginning of Christian Social Services. This mission to help the poor was spearheaded by Sister Teresa Marie Tretter. The Glenmary Sisters recognized that despite the best efforts of the state and federal government, the unique needs of the people in the remote hills of Eastern Kentucky were not being met in the traditional forms of aid. Keeping this in mind, with a staff of only two, Sister Teresea Marie opened a small clothing store to meet the need of affordable, clean clothing. Christian Social Services has been in many locations during its forty-one years in existence. One location was an upstairs room of a condemned hotel. The Center moved nine times in the first 22 years of its existence. Finally, in 1989, the Glenmary Sisters donated the land where the current Center is located. The building was built with funds from foundations, a highly successful fundraiser held within the community, and an interest free loan. Over forty years from its origination, Christian Social Services continues to develop new strategies and programs to meet the changing needs of the people who were so important to Sister Teresa Marie. As far as what we do at the present time, we help people and families obtain food. We work with God's Food Pantry, Kroger, and FEMA. In addition, we assist with electric bill payments, other utilities and crisis situations. We also provide disaster assistance, when needed, and we distribute Salvation Army funds to eligible individuals/families. In our Thrift Store, we offer reduced-priced clothing, shoes, personal items, house wares, and furniture. We provide work-site/training placements for participants from Ky. Works, Ready to Work, Senior Volunteer Program, and practicum students from Morehead State University. Our Center is a processing site for Rowan County Christmas applications. We work in collaboration with Doves, Gateway Homeless Shelter, Youth Build, local churches, and many other local and state agencies/organizations. We also collaborate and organize work projects for summer mission groups who come from other states to help out the needy in our area of Eastern Kentucky. 3
4 Impact Statement During this past year, a lot of our accomplishments have been technology and branding related. They include: New website with active "Donate" button; frequently updated Facebook page; Twitter account; GoodGiving.net portrait; credit card machine for our Thrift Store; and a new logo. We felt it important to spend time getting our message out to a wider audience, so that many more individuals would learn about what we do on a daily basis. A large majority of people have no idea of the need that exists in Eastern Kentucky. Many families have no place to turn...were it not for organizations like ours. We desire to be extremely transparent and encourage God's people to be a part of our mission and to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. During the coming year, we intend to focus more on fundraising and getting the word out as to what we do to help others. This would include things like: Get more involved with possible fundraising avenues such as the Good Giving Guide Challenge and KY Gives Day; develop a yearly fundraising activity that is unique and solely linked to our organization; through various methods, especially advertising/radio/and public speaking engagements, encourage more people to visit our Thrift Store...not only to shop, but to make personal and monetary donations; and spend more time recruiting volunteers to be a part of our organization. It is our belief that as more people learn about what we do at Christian Social Services, then they will begin to realize that they want to be a part of the mission, as well. Poverty touches so many lives. We can't turn away from the people who need us so much. People in Eastern Kentucky are proud, but yet they are so needy. Christian Social Services works hard each day to continue to strive for funds to help the less fortunate in our community. During this coming year, we will continue to look for ways to bring in donations to help the people of our Appalachian area. 5 Programs Programs Assistance with Food and Utilities Description Christian Social Services assists individuals and families who are in crisis situations. This would include not having any food in the home or having received a disconnect notice on a utility bill. This would also include anyone who has seen a decrease in their income during the last ninety days or suffered the loss of a home through fire or natural disaster. Food boxes received will last most families ten days. A family may receive a box up to four times per calendar year. Help with a utility, such as electricity, is available one time per calendar year. CSS follows the guidelines of recipients being at 130 % of the poverty level. Each family served must bring documentation of income and disconnect notices. Budget Category Population Served Religion, General/Other Christianity Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent, Homeless, At-Risk Populations Program Short Term Success During the year 2013, Christian Social Services provided food for 941 families. This was a total of 2,698 individuals. Each box contained enough food for approximately ten days. In regard to disconnected electricity, CSS helped 115 families get their electricity turned back on. Regretfully, even doing as much as we did, it wasn't enough. Many families and individuals could not be helped because funds were just not available. People in poverty and those working minimum wage jobs are finding it extremely hard to make it in this economy. CSS is working hard to find the funding needed to help 100% of the people who come into our organization needing help. It is our prayer not to have to turn anyone away who is experiencing a rough patch of life. Program Long term Success It is our goal to obtain additional funding to be able to help more people in our area of Eastern Kentucky. Each month, our funds are never enough to keep up with the demand for assistance. This past winter has been especially difficult. Because of the extremely cold weather and the kids being home from school so much, families have had to make extremely difficult decisions in regard to what bills they can and cannot pay. Their top priority has been heat. Because of the large heating bills, families have not been able to meet their monthly financial obligations. Christian Social Services has been working hard to help the less fortunate; however, enough funds have not been available to cover the multitude of needs. We hope to be able to generate enough funding and donations during the coming year so that we will be able to help more people during their times of hardships. Everyone has them. 5
6 Program Success Monitored By At Christian Social Services, we take documentation and transparency very seriously. Each individual who we serve goes through a minute screening process at the time of each visit. They are required to bring proper documentation with them showing that their income is at 130% of the poverty level or if they have had a decline in their income during the last 90 days. If help is needed with utilities, then they are required to bring a disconnect notice with them. Each individual has a file that is updated after each visit. Our Case Manager keeps the daily and monthly and yearly records/paper trail that is required by God's Food Pantry, FEMA, Community Partners, and Salvation Army. We are good stewards of donations that we receive, and we are so blessed to be able to help so many people in need in our community. Examples of Program Success We have numerous testimonials from individuals who have received help from CSS. Here is just one of them: Rhonda from Morehead, KY wrote: "I went to CSS to seek help because I was at the end of my money and there was no food. The staff was very polite and non-judgmental and helped me with my situation. I was given enough food to last me and my family until my next pay day. My husband and I work every day, but sometimes our paychecks just do not spread far enough to pay what we need to pay and still be able to feed our family. I am grateful that there is a place we can go to in the time of need that is willing to help. I just can't say enough about the professionalism and compassion shown by the CSS staff. I know that when I have to ask for help, that it will be kept private, and I don't have to worry about being embarrassed. If I am ever in the position to be able to give back, I can guarantee you that CSS would be the first place that I would send my donations. They help so many people with food, clothing, and utility assistance. Thank you Christian Social Services for all that you do for so many." 6
