4 CSI S mission To advance building information management and education of project teams to improve facility performance. CSI is a national association of specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, product representatives, manufacturers, owners and others who are experts in building construction and the materials used therein. They are dedicated to improving the communication of construction information through: A diversified membership base of allied professionals involved in the creation and management of the built environment. Join us. Continuous development and transformation of standards and formats. Education and certification of professionals to improve project delivery processes. Creation of practice tools to assist users throughout the facility life-cycle. Join a CSI Practice Group. CSI is governed by a Board of Directors, a nationally elected body that provides long-range strategic leadership. The Board is composed of nationally elected CSI officers, including the president, president-elect, two vice presidents, the secretary, and the treasurer; elected representatives (directors) from each of CSI's 10 regions; and a director at large. CSI's executive director/ceo is a corporate officer. For more information about or to join CSI, visit or call THOUGHT for the month Innovation is not about saying yes to everything. It's about saying NO to all but the most crucial features." Steve Jobs, entrepreneur ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE THE HABIT OF GOING THE SECOND MILE EVER FIND THE END OF THE RAINBOW It is a fact of life that most of us try and fail many times before we ultimately achieve the level of success that we desire. You can expect to travel the extra mile many times only to find fool s gold at the end of your rainbow. But you will most certainly miss out on the great riches that await you if you quit trying. A superficial commitment to doing more than expected based only on what you expect to receive will not sustain you in the long term. Great achievement results from a commitment to do the right thing regardless of the consequences, and that commitment will ultimately lead you to the pot of gold at the end of your rainbow. NAPOLEON HILL FOUNDATION BOARD activity Our chief want in life is somebody who shall make us do what we can." Ralph Waldo Emerson, writer NOTE: The next Board Meeting will be prior to the Seminar Program on January 4 th at 10:30. To ensure your vote, update your contact information and verify your membership standing at portal.csinet.org. CSI MENTORING Marvin Kemp, CSI, CDT, writes: As an architect, one of the great benefits that I've gained from my involvement in CSI is an understanding and appreciation of what the manufacturer's rep goes through; their everyday trials and tribulations. Some of the negative parts of the job are self-inflicted, but others are inflicted by their management or corporate structures. The biggest light bulb lit for me about six years ago when our chapter had a panel discussion on product substitutions. The product reps on that panel all said they hate substitutions because it means they didn't do their job to get in the spec in the first place. That was one of the first times that I realized we are all in this together and should work to help each other rather than be adversarial or simply use each other. Read this blog. MEMBER bulletins Strong characters are brought out by a change of situation, and gentle ones by permanence." Jean Paul Richter, writer Status CONDOLENCES Harry Peck, CSI and former member of the GO Chapter reported, Yesterday afternoon [November 5 th ], The Grandmaster Architect of the Universe called my Dad from labour to rest. During the past month his heart has been deteriorating. My parents are reunited. OFFICE practice Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them. David Allen, productivity consultant and author NFIP UPDATES: 2016 CHANGES - On October 1, 2015, FEMA announced its 2016 changes to the NFIP. These changes, due to become effective April 1, 2016, include the following: Implementation of 25-percent rate increases for policies covering non-residential business properties with the updated premium rates conforming to HFIAA premium rate caps; Increased Federal Policy Fee for all policies and increased Reserved Fund Assessment for Preferred Risk Policies (PRPs); New premium increases and rating procedures for PRPs, and policies rated under the Newly Mapped procedure; New base premium tables, replacing the previous premium tables, for PRPs and policies rated under the Newly Mapped procedure; and Elimination of subsidies for certain pre-flood Insurance Rate Map properties with policies that lapse and are reinstated. FEMA stated within its memo that many of these changes result from continued implementation of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014 (HFIAA) and the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of These changes are also reported to impact the NFIP Flood Insurance Manual. 8 TECHNOLOGY on a roll The person who gets the farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. Dale Carnegie, writer and motivational speaker TELL ME AGAIN - AND SHOW ME THE MONEY! In the last few articles we looked at how redundancies needlessly increase the size of specifications. Another thing that affects the length of specifications is writing style. Even though CSI's mantra, "Clear, concise, correct, complete", suggests specifications should contain only the essence of requirements, commercial guide specifications and office master specifications alike tend to use words that aren't necessary. In 1949, Ben John Small wrote an article titled "The Case for the Streamlined Specification." In it, he uses anecdote and logic to explain why terse writing is superior to verbose. He also cites previous works that show that streamlined writing is nothing new, but has been advocated as far back as In his opening remarks, Small said, "Streamlining is not and never has been considered a panacea or short cut in the writing of good specifications. If one can write a thorough and competent specification using the long form one can streamline that same specification without the slightest adulteration, yet reduce its bulk by onethird or more." Briefly, streamlining is the removal of all words that are not essential to understanding the specifications.
