Presentation SWU: Carol Reid, National Organiser None Presentation from Carol Reid (Union Contact Recruitment Scheme). CR spoke of her role within the union contact recruitment scheme with the main goal being to recruit, retain and develop SWU contacts We will report on in SASWeekly 1

2 - Looking for not just statutory UC s but also uc s from third and voluntary sector, etc.. - So far, CR has recruited 30 people as UC s, advised Committee & Staff that there will be a Welcome & Intro Day in Liverpool on the 28 th of April CR left flyers with staff & committee members to circulate where they found appropriate CR advised by MM & TH of strong links/ties to UNISON and need to be strategic/mindful of this when approaching potential UC s in Scotland 5. Presentation & Discussion: Amanda Govani, Director Communications & External Affairs Amanda Govani presented on the brand refresh and website redevelopment - There is brand equity in the name BASW of more than 40 years, so rather than change name, strategy was more around refreshing the brand, i.e. enhancing the look and feel, as opposed to completely rebranding - Brand refresh launching at the same time as the new website in May The country sub-branding was presented, and what has been proposed/developed so far was received positively by committee and by staff (retaining SASW, not BASW Scotland as was alluded to in earlier conversations) Launch date TBC AG 6. 3 6.1 BASW Chair Report David Thomson 6.2 Rebranding of BASW verbal report Ian Turner DT s Chair Report was circulated before the meeting; briefly touched upon - 1,000 IDF for attendance at IFSW Global Conference in Dublin IT represented SASW at branding meeting; result was agreed to remain as SASW, instead of BASW Scotland. However, NIASW to become BASW Northern Ireland, so we are the only nation without BASW in title. Application process widely advertised BASW publications, social media and SASWeekly DT to attend as SASW Chair 6.3 BASW Mem & Arts and EGM/AGM EGM Proxy Vote? AGM and SWS conference are at the same time, DT Challenge with BASW AGM is that it coincides with the Social Work Scotland Conference which is the event in Scotland. David may attend SWS MM attending AGM, if not then committee would like staff presence there so that Scotland is represented in some capacity 6.4 IFSW Conference Dublin TH mentioned that SMc may be attending, MM may be attending Places to be agreed by Ruth Allen TH asked to suggest SASW staff to RA 7. SASW Manager s Report TH informed Committee about TP s absence and that the team are feeling being one FT staff member down MM > asked if there was a contingency plan in place when staff were absent TH to mention this/make a case to head office TH to RA ASAP Rejected as budget pressures 3

4 TH said she was disappointed by the lack of attendance at the committee meetings and wondered what else team can do to facilitate participation/attendance amongst other committee members New CRM system is to make a big difference when put in place re engaging with existing members etc TH to write to absent members. We also need to enforce nonattendance rule and actively recruit for new members Committee asked to support attendance and recruit new members 8. SASW: Succession planning, NSC representation at Council, Committee Membership, Annual Meeting 2018, Budget DT tenure up in June 2018, but he advised that he is going to remain on committee and (hopefully) also on Council Currently recruiting for a new chair & committee member(s) whoever is the new chair also needs to sit on Council, which is more time consuming/expensive DT to find out if can remain on Council Vacancy going to be advertised in PSW Potential for remuneration was discussed and that this is necessary as time consuming and may take people away from their day to day job DT advised that he is happy to stay on Council, but not as Chair of SC Agreed that the other Council member needs to be the chair of SC IT & RB said would be willing to assist Request advert Council are considering IT & RB to be kept in mind for positions/to JG 4

5 Budget set on 24,000 members > decreased significantly support in the interim TH reported all budget holders have had discussions and we need to make significant amendments based on a budget of approx. 20,000 members. BASW does not wish to run on deficit budget. Income generation is a priority SASW 41,000 in total budget to cover all expenditure (out with Buildings and recurring associated costs and not including staffing) 15,000 worth of savings SASW budget now for whole year 26,500 Bring income in and cut expenditure MM asked if income can be offset on expenditure, charging for events etc Strategy for events TBC A&R discussed as one of the main incentives for membership (if not the main incentive) MM > mentioned possibility of marketing focusing on the importance of A&R in everyday working life of SW (fear factor?!) but TH said that it s not only reason for people joining, and as well as this reality we also want to promote unique SW organisation in our marketing 5

6 AG: member offer and journey, briefly discussed the marketing strategy that she has created and how it takes these into account Annual Meeting was agreed to be held on Tuesday 5 th of June Social Media to try and recruit new chair/committee members EG to create video/engaging flyer to try and encourage people to get involved 9. Membership targets & suggested activity (Trisha Hall) 10. PEHR Paper for discussion & consultation 11. SASW Social Work Awards 20 March 2018 SASW 37 less members compared to this time last year (peaked at 1464) (Dec ) (Mar ) TH mentioned National Health & Social Care Workplan consultation was responded to Social Services Strategic Forum TH sits on PEHR Paper well received, only briefly touched upon Attendance List Liz Timms to receive lifetime achievement award Shirley Melvin: admin team getting an award Letter to Sunday Herald re Mark Smith? MM mentioned defending the right to free speech, so no? DT argued that a rebuttal needs to be done sensitively and in the context of what was said, it was agreed that there are not enough committee members in attendance at the meeting to make a decision TH to feed back to LG Committee did not wish to pursue correspondence as may backfire 6
