VFW AUXILIARY DEPARTMENT OF MISSOURI PRESIDENT S MESSAGE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017 HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Clifton s house. I hope that this coming year will be a happy and healthy one for all. JANUARY ANNUAL MEMBERS: Those members who did not pay their 2018 dues are no longer members and cannot attend meetings nor hold officer positions. Please contact them and see if they need assistance in paying those dues. We cannot leave any members behind, especially if it is a matter of financial hardship. That is what we are here for. AUXILIARY and DISTRICT CONDUCTRESS: When checking dues cards in your meetings, please make sure the annual cards are for If members have not paid their dues, they are not eligible to remain at the meeting until the time that their dues are paid. Be prepared for your yearend reports. Auxiliary President s print out the forms and give to your chairmen. Ask your chairmen to make a copy and start filling out what has been completed and a list of what needs to be done to be able to complete the report by the first of April. Yearend reports are due April 15. This means in the hands of the chairmen on April 16 th s mail. No reports received after that date will in the competitions for awards. District s Voice of Democracy and Patriot s Pen scholarship winners have been turned in to the Department and now the Department judging is taking place. Which District will it be? I bet it will be one of yours! Now is the time for you to make your reservations for the February Council Meeting and order your banquet ticket so that you can hear the winning speech. I know it is a highlight of this meeting, so I hope to see you there. If you can only attend one meeting this year, I hope it is this one. Seeing these future leaders of our country will leave you with a positive attitude about the youth in Missouri.

FEBRUARY HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO EACH OF YOU. Your second Hospital donation can be sent in February. If you did not make two donations in October, please consider making a second donation as quickly as you can. The VAVS representatives and the representatives at the Missouri Veterans Homes receive some of this money to assist the veterans in these facilities. Your donations do help veterans directly, so I hope that you will give to this worthy cause. Also remember your veterans and their families on Valentine s Day. Get a youth group together and have them decorate cards for the veterans in the hospital or those in the nursing homes. Take them to the facilities to give their cards directly to the veterans. This is a heartwarming thing to see the youth connecting to the veterans. Membership, as I ve said, is the backbone of this organization. Without members, where would we be? Keep working on your former members who haven t paid their 2018 dues. Even go back farther to the 2017 dues. Everyone likes to be remembered. Show our former members that they have not been forgotten. Have a pot luck and invite them to attend and see what you have been doing. Keep in mind the military saying, NO MAN LEFT BEHIND, well, apply it to our members as well. I know some of the Auxiliaries in Missouri had a hard time last year in getting members to take offices. Remember that Nominating Committees are allowed. Presidents can appoint a committee or the membership can vote on the members of the committee. Now would be a good time for a committee to be started to start talking to prospective officers for your Auxiliary. So, my Sisters and Brothers, keep Show(ing) Me Spirit for Veterans and we will have a fun and successful year. Thankful, Grateful, and Blessed, Attest: Nelda Clifton Department President Jeri Sherwood Department Secretary In the aftermath, we are because they were. RJ Heller, Holding Grace: Prose & Poetry

IT HAS COME TO MY ATTENTION THAT THERE ARE SOME ISSUES WITH THE AUDITS: Sec 814 Trustees, Duties of (All Levels) Pages PLEASE READ THIS SECTION! I am going to outline some of the information, but each Trustee should read their duties and be familiar with the process. All audits are to be completed by the elected Trustees with a minimum of two (2) in attendance. At least one (1) must be an elected Trustee. The President, Secretary, and Treasurer should attend the audit. They are not allowed to perform the audit. A signed copy of the ACCEPTED audit shall be forwarded to the Department Treasurer. It shall be the duty of the Trustees to properly audit the books and records of the Auxiliary Treasurer and Secretary no later than the end of the month following the expiration of each quarterly period. (See the graph on page 89 for the quarterly audits). All pages attached to the record books shall be signed by the Trustees at time of the audit. A copy of the accepted audit shall be included in the minutes of the record book. They shall quarterly record the date of audit made and certify by their signatures in all books that the books and records were found correct. They shall verify all expenditures of the Auxiliary and certify by their signatures to the correctness of each bill before payment may be made of same by the Treasurer. The Senior Trustee whose term expires at the next election serves as Chairman and shall call the meetings for the audits. Any negligence on the part of the Trustees in carrying out the mandates of this section, or in attending audits, shall make them individually and collectively responsible, with any others, for any discrepancy. Should a Trustee resign, move away, etc. the Auxiliary will elect a member to fill the unexpired term of that particular Trustee.

I hope everyone had a magical time with family and friends during Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am sure that each auxiliary has done an awesome job in promoting our goals for the year as well as Americanism and Patriotism in general. APRIL 15 TH is just around the next curve in the track. 8 I hope you have planned a new project for Presidents Day. What a wonderful opportunity to sponsor a coloring contest, if you have not done one. I have pictures on the Department website for your use or you may use your own pictures. Patriotic Instructors!! How are you doing working with the members of your Auxiliary on the traditions of the Auxiliary Rituals? Have you discussed with the members about their understanding of the ceremonies of the Auxiliary? The Understanding Auxiliary Traditions help sheet and video are available on the website. 9 HOSPITAL PROGRAM Jan/Feb 2018 General Orders PROGRAM GOALS: VOLUNTEER SERVICE IN MEDICAL FACILITIES Volunteering in medical facilities doesn t always mean VA facilities. Local Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities are additional places to interact with veterans. If you aren t located near a VA Hospital or VA Home, these are an excellent place to do volunteer work. Volunteering at Homeless Shelters, Food Pantries and Senior Centers may give you the opportunity to help veterans. Don t limit yourself because you don t live near a Veteran Facility. But if you are volunteering in VA facilities, don t forget to apply for the National VA Medical Centers Service Pins. Your Hospital Chairman can help you apply. VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT & RECOGNITION Ask new members if they would be interested in doing volunteer work with you. Recognition can be the key to retaining these volunteers. Have a Recognition Tea once a month or give them a certificate to let them know that their work is appreciated. VETERANS VOICES WRITING PROJECT MISSION The mission of this project is to enable military veterans to experience solace and satisfaction through this writing program. The vision is a world where people appreciate that writing can both heal and entertain. Maybe there is a high school student that would be interested in helping also. Volunteering for this project can be done in several ways Helping veterans write (writing aides) Start a writing group with other veterans in your area Organizing fundraisers within your community or workplace Share the mission and information with other veterans, their families and community Typing manuscripts by veteran writers Contact the VVWP office at or send an to volunteer@veteransvoices.org to get started. Military Suicide Awareness The Veteran s crisis line number is , press 1 or go to for more information. Learn to Recognize the Signs: Veterans who are considering suicide often show signs of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and/or hopelessness.

Sew At Home Projects How are your projects coming? Send me pictures of what you have done so they can be put on our Facebook page. This will let others get ideas of what can be done. Don t forget to keep track of your hours and turn them in to receive your pins. I have patterns for neck pillows, wheel chair and walker caddies and lap robes available if needed. I also have instructions for knitted or crocheted watch caps. Don t forget our Veterans on Valentine s Day. Decorate a door, make a card, just say hello to let them know we care. Remember - Time spent volunteering is time well spent especially if it is with Veterans. Catch the Dream for our Veterans By making sure no Veteran feels alone. VOLUNTEER Judith Hutchison, Chairman RR 72 Box 293 Norwood, MO (417)

Celia Davis PO Box 621 Lee s Summit, MO ccdaux@yahoo.com DEPT OF MISSOURI JANUARY/FEBRUARY PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL MEMBERSHIP IMPORTANT: A member ceases to be in good standing on January 1 immediately following the year for which dues have been paid. A member shall not again be in good standing until their dues have been paid for the current year. Dues must be paid by June 30 to remain a continuous member. Also, an officer who has not paid their dues can no longer hold office. Well the holidays are over. Now what do we do with our extra time? Collect dues! We must get on the move. I know that you all are doing your best but we must do more than our best. Get your team together and start making phone calls. Find out why members haven t paid their dues or if they need assistance in any way. Congratulation to all Auxiliaries that attained 100% plus in membership. And a big congratulation to the Districts which all Auxiliaries submitted dues by November 15. Districts will be placed in a drawing for a $50 award. Reasons to recruit members is that they will bring skills and experience that they can use to benefit our organization. More members mean that you can do more work for our organization. The more members you have in our organization the more different ideas and opinions can be expressed and discussed, this will lead to better decisions being made. Communicate with your members and motivate them to volunteer for the organization. You should have a clear plan and process for keeping members involved. People usually join an organization because they want to do something for their community. But they also want to get something out of being a member. You should find out what motivates members and make sure they stay motivated and involved. Members are usually motivated by: Feeling that they are valued by the organization and making a contribution Opportunities to learn new skills or get education about issues that interest them Working on issues that will improve their lives or the lives of their families and communities Feeling part of a team Activities that entertain them or add to their social life Rewards in personal development.

YOUTH ACTIVITIES Jan. Feb Promotional Material I hope your holidays were filled with family and love. Now to get to the business of keeping our Youth involved in our auxiliaries and our programs. Many of our programs overlap that can keep your Youth involved ie, Americanism, Veterans and Family and the Family Freedom Festival to name a few. Work along your with your chairmen and give them ideas to utilize that will help incorporate these programs. Social media is a way to keep your Youth involved with your auxiliary. It is an excellent tool to share and exchange ideas with one another. Keep reporting and sending in your requests for the Youth Groups Supporting Our Veterans Citations. I have received only 6 requests so far. Please remember that all requests must be received by National Headquarters before April 10, To acknowledge your youth, use the 3 Patriotic Youth Award fillable forms on our website and show instant recognition for their participation. A little praise goes a long way. Hopefully you are working on the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP). High school youth are welcome to participate but our focal point should be on middle school students, grades 6-8. They are well equipped to handle this project. These students are well advanced in their understanding of technology. This is a great age for our youth to engage with our veterans and promote their understanding of freedom and patriotism. Host a meet and greet with for your local schools, teachers, principals and counselors, this will give you an opportunity to share our Youth Activities program and the wonderful opportunities we offer our Youth. Thank you for all you do to guide our youth, they are the leaders of tomorrow. Show Me Spirit for Veterans Judy Northcutt 126 Oakfield Drive O Fallon, Mo Cell: judyn43@hotmail.com

Extension January/February 2017 Jackolin M. Davis Missouri VFW Auxiliary Chief of Staff 3849 West Hwy 47 Troy, MO Embrace Our Differences and Work Toward Our Common Goal: Helping Veterans Jane Ziebrth National Chief of Staff/Extension Ambassador An Auxiliary is composed of many different types of people with many different personalities. They may have those who are the workers who get in there and get the job done but do not want to be in charge. They have those who would like to be a worker, but who needs some encouragement to join in, and they have those who like to talk, but do not follow through with what they say they will do. They all have our goal in mind, but some may fall short in completing their goal. The one thing that can break an Auxiliary is personality conflicts. It is hard to come up with a solution. Members need to step back and think how it looks to a new member and what their first impression would be. We lose members due to disagreements, jealousy, being ignored or being continuously told their ideas will never work. We all need to be open minded as to what a members has to say or contribute to our organization. I encourage you to visit the Membership section of the Online Auxiliary Academy and review Engaging Your Auxiliary s Existing Members. We want to engage our existing members and to let them know they have a worth to our Auxiliary and especially to our Veterans, our active duty military and their families, and our communities. We can always agree to disagree. It is not a bad thing and can be good for our Veterans. Let s Catch the Dream for Our Veterans by using the Show Me - Spirit for our Veterans by making our Veterans first. Put away your differences so you can continue our goal for our Veterans.
