1 2011 DEACON CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT FEATURED: On Saturday, April 30, 2011, the employees of S.D. Deacon Sacramento, along with some of our subcontractors, participated with Rebuilding Together, which preserves safe and affordable housing.

2 To Our Friends: 2011 marked a major milestone for S.D. Deacon and the Deacon Charitable Foundation. The company celebrated its 30th Anniversary and our Foundation, its 5th Anniversary. Our clients, employees and subcontractors made these successes possible. Thirty years ago, Steve Deacon and three friends Bob Hall, Bob Olsen and Jim Reilly the owners of J.R. Roberts Corp. founded S.D. Deacon Corp. in Portland. By 1990, the company grew to have offices in California, Washington and Oregon. We attribute our growth and success to our discovery that the more independence and authority we provide to our people, the further they take the company. Growth has never been a primary focus of the company, but when our people were given more responsibility and authority, the results were remarkable. We support organizations that address vital community needs in the areas of human services, animal welfare & the environment We have always supported charities, and five years ago S.D. Deacon created the Deacon Charitable Foundation to formalize the giving to the communities where we live and work. Since 2006, the Foundation has given grants and in-kind gifts totaling more than $1,450,000. The Foundation has evolved into a philanthropic leader in corporate social responsibility with a special focus on children, youth and families, animal protection and the environment. The same autonomy we give our employees in running the business has been given to the employees who volunteer on our Giving Committees. S.D. Deacon employees make all of our giving decisions. Every other year, employees companywide complete a survey that guides the Committees on the kinds of charities they are interested in supporting and what issues are most important to them. Our employees and their families volunteer together and individually for local charities. S.D. Deacon also donates money directly to charities and provides in-kind construction services. The focus of our company is on service, teamwork and communication. Our culture is one of support, humility and encouragement of personal growth. We value open-mindedness and encourage change as a way to improve. We are driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of our people, who in turn are supported by the resources of our company. Everyone is encouraged to pursue his or her passion, to learn and to grow. It s difficult to predict the future, but we ve enjoyed the last 30 years in business and the last five years of Foundation giving. Together we are looking forward to finding out where the future will lead. With gratitude, Deacon Charitable Foundation Board of Directors: Paul Cunha Steve Deacon Kendra Howell Richard Smith Scotty Walker

3 2011 Highlights: In September, the Deacon Charitable Foundation received a Corporate Philanthropy Award from the Portland Business Journal marked the first full year of our Employee Volunteer Matching Program. Twenty-five employees put in 367 hours volunteering for seven different charities. The Foundation donated $10 for each hour they volunteered. Fifty-five employees participated in the Employee Matching Gift Program donating a total of $6,747 to 40 different local and national charities. The Foundation matched each gift dollar for dollar. Paul Cunha, Robert and Kimberly McBride and Mike Dietz Jr. spend their Saturday Rebuilding Together. Portland Charity Co-Chairs Sommer McBride and Kathy Ballard present a $3,000 donation to Friends of the Children. This is the fifth year the Foundation has donated to this organization. Veronica Wences and Cindy Hulliger visit one of Irvine s favorite education providers, Aquarium of the Pacific. Each Giving Committee selected one charity to receive a major gift at least 10% of their annual giving budget. Oregon gave $10,000 to the Children s Relief Nursery, Your ongoing Washington gave $5,000 support of to Ben Towne Foundation, Children s Relief Northern California gave Nursery means $10,000 to The Friendship the world to Club, and Southern our clients and California gave $5,000 will continue to to Canine Companions provide a lifeline for Independence to struggling Southwest Region. families.
