All Ryan Wade (Blake Rayne) ever wanted was to make music. Ryan's dreams of performing on the stage before thousands of screaming fans are seemingly dashed, however, when his preacher father (Ray Liotta) and devout mother (Ashley Judd) pressure him to join the ministry. Later, with the support of his wife (Erin Cottrell), his best friend (Seth Green), and his manager (Joe Pantoliano), Ryan finds fame as "The Identical" -- a rock-and-roll singer who looks and sounds just like the legendary Drexel Hemsley. Meanwhile, as Ryan's desire to perform his own music begins to overshadow his hunger for the spotlight, a discovery regarding his origins during the Great Depression leads to a spiritual and existential crisis that threatens tragedy for both himself and the popular rocker he earns a living impersonating. 2 Tired of all the red lights in life? G.P Outreach gives the green light to a successful and rewarding lifestyle. Be on the look out for the next round of G.P. Outreach Sign Up Sheets on your unit. If you miss the Sign Up Sheet please send a communication to Mr. Washington to be added to the list. Here s what a G.P. Committee member has to say I m everything I pretend to be but then I m not because I feel like a pretentious pretender. There s a huge emptiness underneath the façade. I m very driven; I know I have galactic ambition to complete myself by getting a formal education. I know I have all the characteristics and traits to become the man that my parents raised me to be. But then I also feel phony and disappointed in myself for a lifetime of failures, drug addiction, and abusive behaviors. That makes even me look back on the man that I used to be with deep unseen oceans of shame. That even to this day sometimes late at night sometimes tears stains my pillow. I spent most of my life doing everything I possibly could to not live up to my full potential. And I walk around like I m the man that I want to be, instead of the man that I am. As insecure, slightly maladjusted, uneducated black man having a definite midlife crisis. I m 39 years old and I m still trying to figure myself out. Is that strange? I used to define my self worth by the amount of money I could accumulate. Now I define myself as a life long learner. I am forever open to learning new positive and pro social skill, techniques, wisdom & Knowledge. I believe the more you know the more you can do, the more positive, productive, and successful you can become. I ve learned that the money can be taken away and then you re left with nothing. Without skills, without money, still insecure, still maladjusted, with no education or degree to fall back on. I grew up in a home where the slogan education enriches all aspects of life was a Dean Mantra. Why did I not listen? Why did it take me twenty years of hurting others and hurting myself, to wake up to a simple truth that had been embedded since birth? Backed up by these very revealing statistics. The recidivism rate for ex felons getting out of prison and being re- arrested within 3 years is a staggering 67.8%. That number rises to 76.6 % after 5 years. Oregon Adult Incarceration Program treated inmates after 1 year of being released is 69% lower rate of recidivism than those untreated. After 3 years that number drops to 22% lower than the regular untreated recidivism rate. What this screams to me is that New Directions Adult Incarceration Program gives us and teaches us everything that we need for initial success. But what doing everything we possibly can to fortify our ultimate success. Here is where the steady umbrella of education comes in to enrich our lives. For those getting an associates degree after being released from prison, the recidivism rate drops to 13.7%. Those acquiring a Bachelor s Degree the recidivism drops further to 5.6% from 76.6%. Combining the statistical probability of successful completion of the New Direction Adult Incarceration Program after 3+ Years being 22% lower recidivism. With acquiring some form of formal education whether it be an associate s degree or a bachelor s degree. Would chop your statistical chances of coming back to prison less than 0%. How is that possible? Why is that possible? My personal theory would be being able to identify our negative, destructive, criminal, addictive, and abusive core beliefs. Changing those core beliefs, so that we can change our thoughts, and in turn change our actions, is a huge first step of getting to the root of our problems. With that and all the other tools and techniques that we learn in the Adult Incarceration Program will give is a solid foundation on which to step back into our individual community. But how many of us as addicts are masking low selfesteem or deep rooted insecurity? That we used drug or alcohol to mask those emotions of inadequacy or not feeling worth of being a contributing member of society. Having occupational dreams, goals and aspirations and getting the required schooling to make those dreams, goals and aspirations a reality. Will be beneficial for two important reasons; First & foremost setting a goal and accomplishing a goal helps to increase ones self-esteem, self respect, and increases the knowledge that you the ability for sustained long term self discipline. And the second benefit would be lower your chances of recidivism to 0 percent. It s easy to give lip service and say that we don t want to come back to prison. The real question is are we willing to do what is necessary to ensure that happens?" Tevin Mark Dean Release Date Powder River Weekly Bulletin 11/2/2015 Page 2 of 10

4 Is Al-Anon Different from AA? The volunteers are ready to share their experience of how Al- Anon works. Al-Anon is a program that works for alcoholics and nonalcoholics who have been indirectly affected by alcohol (family members, friends, etc.). Like AA, it is a Twelve-Step recovery program, yet Al-Anon is for the loved ones and friends of persons who have an alcohol problem. When life causes a fear of loss of control over what happens, during childhood or as an adult, Al-Anon can help. Whether the problem is the alcoholic in their lives or the world in general, Al-Anon offers a gentle but powerful path to serenity that can be applied right now, in prison, and upon release. An important part of the meetings is anonymity. What is shared at the meeting stays at the meeting. Al-Anon meetings are held Tuesdays at 5:30pm to 6:30pm in the Multipurpose Building. A person may attend once by signing up with Ms. Childs, please send her a communication to be added to the callout. As visitor, if you decide no longer to participate, please send Ms. Childs a communication to be removed from the call out. It is a chance to decide if Al-Anon is for you. NA&AA Add/Drop Requests Please send all NA and AA Add/Drop Requests to Ms. Childs. Powder River Weekly Bulletin 11/2/2015 Page 4 of 10

6 Short Term Transitional Leave Frequently Asked Questions. Topic 1: Do I meet criteria for Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL)? If you see TL eligible with a date on the upper left side of your face sheet, it means you have met initial eligibility requirements for STTL not that you will necessarily release to STTL. (If you do not meet these initial requirements, not eligible for transitional leave will be displayed on your face sheet.) The Short-Term Transitional Leave Eligibility Date (SED) is the earliest date you could start STTL, if approved. Which means you may get to go out on leave and you need to start thinking about how to prepare for your meeting with your Release Counselor. Note: If approved for STTL, your custody level must be 1 or 2 to participate. How long is STTL? If you are eligible to participate in STTL, the length of STTL is determined by when you were sentenced. If you were sentenced prior to 8/1/2013, you might be eligible for up to 30 days of STTL. If you were sentenced on or after 8/1/2013, you might be eligible for up to 90 days of STTL. Coming Soon: Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL): How do I prepare for my meeting with my Release Counselor? ************************************************************************ ** Topic 2: Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL): How do I prepare for my meeting with my Release Counselor? Your first step is to make sure you complete all treatment/work as directed and continue to behave in a prosocial manner. Remember, STTL is an incentive-based opportunity. If you earn a level 1 or 2 misconduct report OR a program fail (FOCP) within 12 months of your Short-Term Transitional Leave Eligibility Date (SED), you will no longer be eligible for STTL. For example, if your SED is 12/1/15 and you receive a FOCP on 1/30/15, you will not be eligible for any STTL. While you can be referred for STTL when it is expected that your medium custody level will drop to a minimum custody level prior to STTL, you cannot participate in STTL until your custody level is officially 1 or 2 in the system. You will be required to sign STTL conditions prior to leave. If you refuse to sign STTL conditions, your STTL will be denied. Please be aware your behavior will impact your ability to participate in leave, even if you meet the basic criteria. If ODOC or Community Corrections have significant concerns about your behavior, your STTL will be denied. Your second step is to prepare release addresses prior to meeting with your Release Counselor. Due to the number of people participating in leave and the processing time for staff regarding leave, addresses/waivers for STTL will be limited to what is provided on the initial release plan. Addresses provided after the plan is sent out will not be considered for STTL. A waiver request to another county will require a private address. Powder River Weekly Bulletin 11/2/2015 Page 6 of 10

7 Be aware some counties do not provide subsidy housing for STTL. Maintaining housing is a requirement of STTL. You cannot release to STTL unless you have approved housing. Furthermore, you will be returned to ODOC if you lose your housing while on leave. If you decide not to participate in STTL, your decision stands. You will not be considered for STTL at a later date if you change your mind. You must choose between applying for interstate compact upon release from incarceration OR participating in STTL. If you decide to apply for interstate compact and the compact is denied, you will not be allowed to participate in STTL. If your STTL is denied, you will not be reconsidered for STTL. Lastly, it is important you address detainers and unresolved pending charges (listed as other charges on your face sheet) through your facility s legal library early in your incarceration. It is often too late to resolve these issues if you wait until the end of your incarceration. Unresolved pending charges (also known as Other Charges ) must be converted to cite to appear in the ODOC computer system. Detainers with an expiration date before your projected release date must officially expire. It is your responsibility to follow through with the courts by working with the legal assistant in the legal library. The earlier you start this process, the better. Documentation regarding detainers and other charges must be processed through proper channels ODOC will not accept documentation from adults in custody. Coming Soon: What is expected of me during Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL)? ************************************************************************ *** Topic 3: What is expected of me during Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL)? STTL is a privilege and with privilege comes responsibility. If you are approved for STTL, you will be required to comply with all of your Parole Officer s (PO s) directives and expectations including where to live. Please be aware if you violate STTL conditions, you might be returned to ODOC, spend a significant amount of time in the county jail, lose earned time credit, and/or repay extraditions costs. If you lose your housing, you will be returned to ODOC. Additionally, if you lose your housing due to your behavior, you will be considered out of compliance with your PO s directives and are subject to all of the consequences discussed above. Coming Soon: My Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL) was denied, how do I ask for an administrative review? ************************************************************************ ***** Topic 4: My Short-Term Transitional Leave (STTL) was denied, how do I ask for an administrative review? If your STTL was denied due to ODOC s or a County s decision, you can ask for an administrative review by writing a letter to the ODOC Assistant Director of Community Corrections, Jeremiah Stromberg. 8 If you are not eligible for STTL due to a program fail, misconduct, or custody level, the STTL office cannot override these factors. Please address these issues at the institution level following the usual procedure. If you are not eligible for STTL due to your crime, judgment order, or open warrants, the STTL office cannot override these factors. Please address your concerns to the courts (or in cases of sex offender status, the Board of Parole and Post-Prison Supervision) through the legal library.
