Very cold, lots of snow and then came the January thaw and our snow is going. The fog that went along with the warmer weather was terrible. The board is working on HCE day, we hope it will be exciting and many of you will attend. Remember the Cultural Arts Contest, be sure to read the new rules - a few changes each year. Hope many of you were able to attend the Carbone Cancer Center project presented by Nancy. It was very informative. Looking for new members if anyone has any leads let someone on the board know, and we will try to help you. If you have ideas to help us draw in people, let us know. 2 Happy Homemakers January 12, 2017 Thank you card received for the Venet Family for the donation for Bailey s benefit. They reported she is doing well since the surgery. Medford Bird Club reported there are 257 species in WI! O-W Enterprise is in need of recipes. Hilltop January 24, 2017 Reminder to all members to save all food and beverage labels for school. Peggy, Mary, and Arlene presented information from UW-Carbone s Cancer Clear and Simple. are available online. Lone Pine January 23, 2017 Highlights Margaret Artz gave a report on the traditions of swearing in a new president. A report on high blood pressure and some of the causes was given by Rosemary Sladish. and Simple program to HCE members on January 24th. This well-attended event provided attendees with some important and timely information. Information packets were provided for each club. See your club president for details. HCE Day Growing with HCE, HCE Day 2017 is swiftly approaching. Registration for the event is now open. Please complete the attached registration form and return to Lois Becker. Cultural Arts Show and Contest Registration for the 2017 show is now open. Please see the attached form for more details on the event. An article was shared about purchasing a coffee stone from the streets of Paris! 3 News On the Move and in the Groove break 150,000 points next year with everyone Movin' and Grovin'! PLEASE forward your County reports to me by June 10 th, This is very important because our State President needs the information for the NVON Conference. These numbers look good on our report for NVON. THANK YOU for your participation and looking forward to 2017! February 28th to May 27, 2017 Family and Community Life will again be focusing on walking and exercise as a countywide activity. Any activity you do between February 28 th and May 29 th can be counted. This includes walking, cleaning, gardening, dancing, swimming, and youname-it exercise of any kind. Each 20 minutes equals 1 point, for example, one hour equals 3 points. Please report your totals in points, not hours. All forms for individuals or groups are available on-line, or you may develop your own...as long as you use points for your totals. Remember, one point for every 20 minutes of activity. Please compile your reports at the county level and send them to Vice President for Family and Community Life. Your reports should show totals for each individual. Remember to include the name, address, county, phone or of the person sending the report. In 2016 there were 33 counties that reported participation in 'On the Move and in the Groove' with total points at 136,834 up from 98,989 in 2015! Way to go! They very much appreciated the items we donated last year. Needed items include: Coffee Canned Meats Canned fruits in natural juice Snack-Pack pudding Low sodium soups (Healthy Choice) Oatmeal (plain Quick 1-Minute Towel sets (light weight, clean, gently used) Pillow cases Again, thank you for your donations. 4 HCE Executive Board Meeting January 30- ADS Greenwood 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Lois Becker at 6:00 p.m. at at the ADS in Greenwood. Other members present were: Deb Gries, Treasurer; Joanne Trunkel-Vice President for Family and Community Outreach; Betty Loos- Historian, Diana Schuette- Wisconsin Bookworm TM Coordinator and Cultural Arts Chair; Joan Knack; and Mary Kipp-Secretary. The Secretary's Report was read and placed on file. The Treasurer's report was read and placed on file. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: The new MEMBERSHIP AND PHOTO RELEASE FORM was discussed by Lois Becker and Joanne Trunkel. Program Assistant at the UW Extension Office will be asked to send the form to Club Presidents so that members can sign the form. HCE DAY: Sandy Fritz, Coordinator, and the Neillsville Clubs have been working on arrangements for HCE DAY. It will be held at the CART Center in Neillsville on April 8. The theme for the Day is "Growing with HCE." Mini-Sessions were discussed. Donations will again be collected for the Office on Aging. Mary Kipp will contact the Office on Aging for recommended donations. HCE Day information will be in the upcoming Newsletter. WISCONSIN BOOKWORM TM COORDINATOR: Diana Schuette discussed the recent donations which have been received. NEW BUSINESS: WEST DISTRICT MEETING: Will be held April 10 in Monroe County. 5 International Committee The Quiltlets, for Nicaragua, that members made this last year were such a big success that we have decided to continue the project. "Therapy Quilts" for Nicaragua. The instructions follow: Lightweight Quiltlets for Medical Centers in Nicaragua Use Cotton Fabric Use 2 pieces of fabric (No batting) Make in different sizes - anywhere from one yard pieces of fabric to two yards or so - and any size in between. Usually the width of the fabric(45" wide). Can also use up your smaller pieces of fabric from quilt making squares, designs or whatever else works. Color is always good and cheerful - children's or any happy design. The children in the hospital are anywhere from infants, toddlers to young teens. Larger size quilts are also in need. They are also used for adults to have a light cover for dignity. We can obtain labels from Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners to put on the quilts. Sew the two pieces together and then quilt with embroidery thread or yarn, or simply topstitch the edges and a few times across the center. If your club is interested in making some, need more information, or when you have some contact Lois Becker ( ) or Joanne Trunkel ( ). We will be collecting them at HCE Day, in April. Honoring our Veterans March 22nd, 10:00AM in the Neillsville Auditorium Presented by Aaron Greisen, Clark County Veterans Officer It is the mission of the veteran service office to advise persons living in the county who served in the U.S. Armed Forces regarding any benefits to which they may be entitled or any complaint or problem arising out of such service and render to them and their dependents all possible assistance. Aaron will be speaking about some of the issues that veterans deal with on a daily basis as well as how we can help and honor the veterans in our lives. Soap Making Demonstration with Danae and Jody Stieglitz - No cost Have you ever wanted to see how soap is made? Join Danae and Jody Stieglitz from 1909 Farmstead Soaps LLC for a soap making demonstration. They will be using the cold process of soap making by using lye, oils, and goat milk to make handcrafted, specialty soaps. Adoption Journey - Wendy Fritz & Lauran Lelein A mother/daughter team tell the story of their adoption journey from Guatemala. Presentation includes Q&A and Power Point. Recycled Bags Use your pet food or birdseed bags to create unique environmentally friendly fashion accessories!
