1 Earlimart Schl District Wellness Plicy Updated Students BP5030 STUDENT WELLNESS - PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION The Earlimart Schl District, in partnership with parents and the cmmunity, is cmmitted t prviding a healthy schl envirnment. Gd health fsters student perfrmance, attendance, and educatin. By supprting healthy eating and physical activity, we will prmte and prtect children s health, well-being and ability t learn. It has been researched and dcumented that besity and ther illnesses are directly linked t unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity patterns that are ften established in childhd. The Earlimart Schl District has the pprtunity t be a psitive influence n its students by ffering the healthiest fds, beverages and physical activity pprtunities pssible and by prviding ther health-supprting prgrams and pprtunities. Therefre, Earlimart Schl District will:. 1. Schl District Wellness Cmmittee 2. Fds and Beverages Served and Sld n Campus Establish and sustain a Schl District Wellness Cmmittee, cnsisting f a grup f individuals wh represent the schl and cmmunity, including parents, students, fd services staff, Physical Educatin, schl site Principal r Vice Principal, member f the schl bard, health prfessinals, and members f the public at large. Cnvene the Schl District Wellness Cmmittee at least fur times during the schl year at hurs cnvenient fr public participatin. The cmmittee will discuss implementatin, mnitring and revisin f the lcal schl wellness plicy and prvide plicy recmmendatins t the Bard f Educatin. Charge the Schl District Wellness Cmmittee, District Superintendent and site administratrs with annually ensuring that the Lcal Schl Wellness Plicy is implemented, mnitred and revised. Ensure that the fds and beverages served and sld n campus are nutritius, appealing and attractive t students. Ensure that the fds and beverages served and sld n campus meet, at a minimum, lcal, state and federal statutes and regulatins, and whenever pssible, exceed minimum standards. Increase and prmte availability f drinking water as an essential cmpnent f student wellness by imprving access t free, safe drinking water in cmpliance with Senate Bill 1413 (Len)
2 a. Schl Meals (reimbursable meals) b. Fds and beverages sld individually (e.g., thse distributed inside and utside the schl meal prgrams thrugh vending machines, in the cafeteria a la carte lines, fundraisers, schl stres) Whenever pssible, if Earlimart schls qualify, ffer free meals t students thrugh Prvisin 2 f the Natinal Schl Lunch and r Breakfast prgrams. Whenever pssible, ensure that nutritius breakfasts, lunches and snacks are ffered during schl, after schl and during the summer mnths. Serve fd in quantities apprpriate t the needs f students at their age level as guided by the Califrnia Department f Educatin s Enhanced Fd Menu Planning apprach. Increase the availability f fresh fruits and vegetables by adding a salad bar as part f the schl fd service prgram at Earlimart Middle and Earlimart Alila Elementary schls. Maintain updated nutritinal guidelines set by the USDA 7 CFR Parts 210 and 220, t view dcument see belw link Ensure that fds and beverages sld individually cmply with lcal, state and federal regulatins. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS (excludes middle and high schls) ALLOWABLE FOODS: The nly fds that can be sld t elementary students are full meals, exempt fds and dairy r whle grain fds that meet specific calrie, fat, saturated fat and sugar requirements (Applies ½ hur befre the schl day and until ½ hur after schl.) EXEMPT FOODS These fds can be sld and d nt have t meet calrie and fat limits; hwever, they cannt have added sugars r fat (check the ingredients list t ensure). Nuts Nut butters (such as peanut butter Seeds (such as sunflwer seeds) Eggs Cheese packaged fr individual sale Fruits and nn-fried vegetables Legumes NOTES: Fd items fr sale cntaining nn-exempt fds r ingredients cmbined with the exempt items abve must cmply with the restrictins fr nn-exempt fds (e.g. trail mix cntaining chclate chips). A la carte entrees cannt be sld in Elementary Schls. Outside entities (e.g. PTA) may sell a full meal prvided it meets a USDA meal pattern. DAIRY & WHOLE GRAIN FOODS Individually sld dairy r whle grain fds can be sld if they cntain: Nt mre than 175 calries Nt mre than 35% f ttal calries frm fat Nt mre than 10% f ttal calries frm saturated fat
3 Nt mre than 35% f ttal weight frm sugar (natural and added) N artificial trans fat (see details belw) Dairy: a fd made frm milk with the exceptin f cheese packaged fr individual sale. Whle grain: Fr purchased grain r bread prducts: Label cntains the statement: Diets rich in whle grain fds and ther plant fds and lw in ttal fat, saturated fat, and chlesterl, may help reduced the risk f heart diseases and certain cancers r The first listed grain ingredient is a whle grain, r If the first listed ingredient is nt identified as a whle grain, btain dcumentatin frm the manufacturer within previus 12 mnths that lists a cmbinatin f whle grains that cmbined represent at least 51% f the weight f the ttal grains. Fr bread r grain prducts prepared by schls: The weight f the whle grains is at least 51% f the ttal grain weight f the prduct. ALLOWABLE BEVERAGES (Applies at all times, regardless f the time f day). Beverages may nt cntain added sweeteners calric r nn-calric with the exceptin f nn-dairy milk alternatives (e.g., almnd, rice, sy milks) fr lactse sensitive r intlerant students with Dctr signed Special Meal frm. Additinally, n beverages may cntain additives, including clrs, flavrings, herbs, vitamins, and minerals (e.g., electrlytes), r stimulants (e.g., caffeine). Only the fllwing beverages are allwed: Water Nn-fat r 1% cw s milk Must cntain vitamins A and D and at least 25% f the Daily Value fr calcium per 8 fluid unces Excludes flavred milks, including chclate, strawberry and vanilla Nn-dairy milk alternatives Must cntain vitamins A and D and at least 25% f the Daily Value fr calcium per 8 fluid unces Excludes flavred milks, including chclate, strawberry and vanilla N mre than 5 grams f fat per 8 fluid unces N mre than 12 grams f calric sweetener per 8 fluid unces. Fruit r vegetable juice that cntains at least 50% juice MIDDLE/JUNIOR AND HIGH SCHOOLS (Excludes High Schl) ALLOWABLE SNACKS AND ENTREES (Applies ½ hur befre schl day and until ½ hur after schl.)

All must meet the limit f 250 calries r less. ENTREES (Generally regarded as the primary fd in a meal) Entrees shall: Cntain n mre than 400 calries per item Cntain n mre than 4 grams f fat per 100 calries (36% fat) Entrees must cntain: 2 r mre f the fllwing grups: meat/meat alternative, grain/bread, vegetable/fruit (e.g. turkey sandwich, baked ptat with chili, fruit and cheese platter) r A meat/meat alternative alne (e.g. sausage patty, egg, chicken nuggets) excluding nuts, nut butters, seeds, cheese, and ygurt. T determine if an individual snack r entrée meets Califrnia s nutritin standards, check the Nutritin Facts label. 5 areas, classrms, hallways, play yards and athletic fields, and faculty lunges thrughut the schl day and at befre- and after-schl activities Allw students t bring drinking water frm hme and t take water int the classrm, prvided that the water is in a capped cntainer, such as a bttle, t prevent spills Encurage all schl administratrs, teachers, and building staff t mdel drinking water Perfrm maintenance n all water funtains regularly and as needed Cnduct peridic testing f all drinking water surces in each District facility. Make the test results available in an easily accessible frmat (e.g., pst n District website), and deliver letters t affected students and parents HIGH SCHOOLS Earlimart Schl District des nt currently have High Schl prgrams c. Fundraising Superintendent r designee will ensure that alternative fundraising strategies such as sales f nn-fd items, prmtin f physical activity, and/r sales f nutritius fd items that meet r exceed Califrnia Nutritin Standards and Earlimart Schl District fd and beverage standards (see 2b) are used in schl fundraisers. Fd Service Directr and Wellness Cmmittee will prvide list f apprved fundraising activities t district staff d. Vending Vending machines must meet all Fd and Beverage standards established in this Plicy and be apprved by the Fd Service Directr. (See 2b) e. Parties/Celebratins All fds prvided during parties/celebratins must be purchased thrugh Earlimart Nutritin Services and apprved by Fd Service Directr Dnatins f fds by utside party (such as a pizza parlr) must meet Califrnia Nutritin Standards and Nutritin Standards set frth by Earlimart Schl District. Dnatins must be apprved by Fd Service Directr t assure cmpliance f. Rewards Fd, candy and beverages cannt be used as a reward fr student accmplishments, including cllabratin with private industry that may prvide the incentive item g. Schl Events Any event hsted n schl campuses including but nt limited t: pen huse, parent meetings, carnivals that prvide fd shall meet Califrnia Nutritin Standards and Standards set frth by Earlimart Schl District( See 2b)
6 Fd items that d nt meet r exceed Califrnia Nutritin Standards and Standards set frth by Earlimart Schl District (See 2b) cannt be utilized fr demnstratin purpses. Instead fruits and vegetables as well as nuts r dried fruits will be used. These items much be purchased thrugh Earlimart Fd Service Department 3. Physical Educatin (PE) Elementary schls are t met Califrnia State Physical Educatin standards f 200 minutes per 10 days Middle Schls are t met Califrnia State Physical Educatin standards f 400 minutes per 10 days Ensure students are ffered expanded pprtunity fr physical activity and prmte lifelng physical activity The physical activity prgram shall increase emphasis n teaching fitness and lifelng recreatinal aerbic activities Intramural sprts will be played as part f the after-schl enrichment prgram at Earlimart Elementary Schl The District and its site administratrs will ensure that physical activity is nt given ut as punishment, the use f detentins, campus clean-up, and ther nn physical activity punishments will be encuraged The summer schl prgram shall include Nutritin Educatin and Physical Educatin as part f it s curriculum Nutritin educatin will be incrprated in the Physical Educatin class curriculum at all schls Bringing in lcal experts will be allwed fr sprts r activities nt traditinally taught during Physical Educatin classes in the after schl setting, such as lcal law enfrcement teaching a self-defense unit, etc 4. Physical Activity Ensure students are ffered pprtunities fr lifelng physical activity Intramural sprts will be played as part f the after-schl enrichment prgram at Earlimart Elementary Schl The District and its site administratrs will ensure that physical activity is nt given ut as punishment, the use f detentins, campus clean-up, and ther nn physical activity punishments will be encuraged Create/expand cmmunity partnerships t increase the range f physical activity ptins available t students and staff, n and ff campus Bringing in lcal experts will be allwed fr sprts r activities nt traditinally taught during physical educatin classes in the after schl setting, such as lcal law enfrcement teaching a self-defense unit, etc. Increase the amunt f physical activity related enrichment classes thrugh intramural sprts 5. Marketing Marketing f healthy fd and beverages will be strategically placed in cafeterias prmting wellness thrugh fruit, lw-fat milk and water cnsumptin

Nutritin Educatin The after-schl prgram shall prvide a sectin f nutritin educatin as part f their curriculum Nutritin related psters shall be displayed in the dining areas f all three sites t encurage healthy fd chices The summer schl prgram shall include Nutritin Educatin and Physical Educatin as part f it s curriculum Nutritin educatin will be incrprated in the Physical Educatin class curriculum at all schls Teachers will be allwed t establish a garden as part f curriculum t give students the pprtunity t plant, harvest, and eat fd they have grwn Increase knwledge f nutritin and physical activity as it relates t childhd and adult health 7. Other Schl-Based Activities a. Health Educatin Have a yearly lcal health fair in which, amng ther health related issues, nutritin and physical activity infrmatin will be given Create/expand cmmunity partnerships t increase the range f physical activity ptins available t students and staff, n and ff campus b. Health Prmtin fr Staff c. Family/Cmmunity Invlvement d. Healthy Schl Envirnment NA Increase knwledge f nutritin and physical activity as it relates t childhd and adult health Share nutritin infrmatin thrugh the parent center and thrugh taste-testing at schl r cmmunity functins (examples: parent nights, fairs, etc) Have a yearly lcal health fair in which, amng ther health related issues, nutritin and physical activity infrmatin will be given Ensure meals are served in a pleasant envirnment with sufficient time fr eating, while fstering gd manners and respect fr students and staff Child Nutritin Service shall wrk with schl site leadership t imprve cafeteria décr and atmsphere by adding clrful nutritin psters and/r murals t all schl cafeterias Child Nutritin Service shall slicit student preferences in planning menus and snacks thrugh surveys and taste tests f new fds and recipes Earlimart Schl District staff shall be encuraged t peridically jin the students fr lunch in the cafeteria in an effrt t mdel gd manners and behavir Earlimart Schl District maintenance department will cntinue t develp utdr eating areas suitable fr all seasns Students will be prvided sufficient time t eat and scialize with classmates

After-Schl Prgrams The after-schl prgram shall prvide a sectin f nutritin educatin as part f their curriculum Develp after-schl activities that invlve physical activity such as walking clubs and increased access t sprts/physical fitness equipment The District will spnsr and finance a district-wide cmprehensive after schl sprts prgram fr grades Kindergarten thrugh 8 th All fd and beverages prvided in after schl prgrams must meet r exceed the Califrnia Nutritin Standards and Earlimart Nutritin Standards (see 2b) f. Other 40% f prduce purchased and served will be lcally Farm t Schl grwn fresh prduce. Lcally grwn encmpasses the regin f Stanislaus Cunty t Kern Cunty 8. Plicy Implementatin and Mnitring 9. Jint use f Schl Facilities The Lcal Schl Wellness Cmmittee and its members alng with the District Superintendent and site administratrs have the respnsibility f mnitring and ensuring that the Lcal Schl Wellness Plicy is fllwed by all staff and students in Earlimart Schl District The lcal Schl Wellness Plicy will be reviewed and revised n a yearly basis by the schl wellness cmmittee Middle Schl gates must remain pen at designated Jint use time perids. Maintain lease cntracts with the Tulare Cunty WIC prgram and the Tulare Medical Center t allw fr the nging peratin f public health clinics n schl prperty. Prvide access t the Middle Schl athletic field befre and after schl hurs 7 days per week, by leaving the gates pen and the lights turned n (when necessary) t prvide physical activity pprtunities fr unaffiliated Earlimart residents. Preserve the designated 4 ½ acres f the Elementary Schl prperty bunded by Elm and Schl Streets fr develpment f a jint use park fr partial, exclusive use by students during the schl day and daily use therwise frm dawn t dusk by Earlimart residents. Cnsider all feasible prpsals fr the ptential jint use f schl prperty and ther assets e.g. pen green space, cmmunity garden meeting, meeting rm and parking space, buses, and schl kitchen facilities.
