So it was when we were approached by Alpaca breeders to produce bespoke products suitable for feeding to Alpacas and Llamas. After research and trials by Ian Powley (products manager) and Dr Cliff Lister (senior nutritionist), Camelid Care Coarse Mix was born. The feed is now a market leader sold through our network of branches, merchants and suppliers. As specialists in Animal Health products, it was natural to extend our range to products such as colostrum, milk replacer and mineral supplements and we have now teamed up with Osmonds to enable us to expand are range. Camelids, such as alpacas and llamas, have a very efficient digestive system due to the longer retention time of digestion in the gut, compared with conventional ruminants such as sheep and cattle. Forages can therefore provide the bulk of the major nutrients needed on a daily basis, but additional mineral supplementation will be needed to optimise health and performance. 3 CAMELID CARE COARSE MIX Camelid Care Coarse Mix has been specifically formulated to contain no GM raw materials and to meet the needs of growing and adult camelids fed forage rich diets. Raw materials used are quality pelted materials - sugar beet pulp, wheatfeed nuts wheat, distillers dark grains and dried grass nuts, carefully blended with traditional coarse mix products - flaked peas and beans, citrus pulp and rolled oats and molasses and a unique customised mineral package to produce a 14% protein coarse mix. Mineral, trace element and vitamin levels are very high to ensure complete supplementation of the overall diet at the low daily feed rate. Recommended feed rates are 250g/day for a growing or adult alpaca of 60-65g live weight. Pregnant and lactating alpacas have a higher mineral requirement in the final 5-6 weeks of pregnancy and during lactation and should be fed up to 500g/day. Exact requirements can only be determined by knowing the weight and body condition of the animals being fed. Body condition should be based on present condition, not past or projected and feed rates adjusted to achieve the ideal target condition based on the frame size and nutritional needs of the animals.

6 ALPACA GRASS SEED MIXES Whilst camelids can thrive on most types of grassland, if you are planning to re-seed a paddock the following mixtures would be suitable.
