3 Workshop Descriptions and Learning Objectives Saturday, April 28, 2012 Rehabilitation of Knee Pathology Across the Lifespan Mark S. DeCarlo, PT, DPT, MHA, SCS, ATC Course Description: Knee pathology is a common clinical problem encountered in sports medicine and orthopedic settings. Careful clinical examination and differential diagnosis is essential in treating knee disorders. Participants will learn the most recent evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation techniques. Meeting content will include a relevant review of anatomy, biomechanics and clinical examination principles along with operative and non-operative rehabilitation considerations for ligamentous, extensor mechanism and articular cartilage pathology including osteoarthritis and total knee replacement. Describe and demonstrate a detailed evaluation scheme that includes ligament and extensor mechanism testing, osteokinematic and arthrokinematic motion assessment, strength evaluation and interpretation of radiological images and reports. Design comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation programs for pathological knee conditions including ligament injury, extensor mechanism dysfunction, articular cartilage and degenerative joint disease. Understand various surgical procedures including ACL reconstruction, extensor mechanism and articular cartilage procedures and total knee replacement. Integrate an understanding of injury mechanism, knee pathology and natural history with therapeutic exercise and treatment parameters. Sunday, April 29, 2012 TRACK 1 Current Topics in Pediatrics Mark Drnach, PT, DPT, MBA, PCS; Sheryl Holt, PT, MS; and Alison Kreger, PT, DPT, PCS, CKTP Course Description: Treating children can be challenging. Not only are you concerned with medical conditions, but also their typical development as children and their futures. As physical therapists and physical therapist assistants we become involved with children for a variety of reasons, including those with medical conditions making them frail and developmental delays. As we work to help them learn to move for the first time or regain skills lost, we need to keep in mind what else is involved. Their families/caretakers..those who are raising the children we see. Who continue the therapies recommended each day. The other family members surrounding those children, involved in their lives, as they grow and become adults in society. How do we involve family, enable the children to be active participants in their family and community and best prepare these children for their future as adults? We will discuss this in respect to our communities and from a global perspective. We will close with a round table discussion of current topics and questions pertaining to pediatric physical therapy. 4 TRACK 2 Special Considerations in the Treatment of Knee Pathology Mark S. DeCarlo, PT, DPT, MHA, SCS, ATC Course Description: This aspect of the meeting will focus on special considerations in treating knee pathology including rehabilitation of complications following injury and surgical management of the knee as well as functional rehabilitation, testing and return to activity criteria. A hands-on, case study format will be used in allowing the course participant to master advance clinical treatment techniques. Each participant will: Gain an advanced understanding of assessment and treatment techniques related to the management of complications following knee injury and surgery including arthrofibrosis, lower extremity biomechanical dysfunction and core strength deficits. Illustrate functional strengthening and testing strategies for the injured patient to ensure a safe return to full unrestricted activity TRACK 3 Plain Film Radiology: Introduction to Organization and Interpretation of Films for the PT Carol Waggy, PT Course Description: This course will provide an overview of plain film radiography of the skeletal system. The introduction will include information on the different views or series that are common for specific areas of the body. The ABC s of radiographic interpretation will be utilized as examples of normal and abnormal films are studied. Terminology to describe pathologies observed on the films will be reviewed. Application of this information will be practiced with case examples. (Pssst, don t tell anyone, but taking the time to practice the interpretation of plain films can be an excellent review of musculoskeletal anatomy). Each participant will: Describe the systematic organization of film evaluation referred to as the ABCs. Use radiographic terminology to describe fracture lines and displacement patterns. Demonstrate an understanding of primary and secondary intention bone healing. Recognize hardware utilized for fracture stabilization which allows stress-sharing versus stressshielding. Identify normal and abnormal soft tissues lucencies on plain films. Utilizing case examples, describe how the radiograph assists in the development of a physical therapy diagnosis and /or a treatment plan.

5 Poster Presentations on Saturday, April 28, 2012 We are pleased to announce the first annual peer reviewed Physical Therapy Poster Presentation for the state of West Virginia. WVPTA is excited to provide this opportunity for faculty, students and clinicians and hope that we can broaden our knowledge through continued research and education. The accepted posters will be on display Saturday morning during the conference 10:00-10:45 a.m. and presenters will be available at their poster for Q&A/discussion. Fun Events to Raise Money There will be Fundraising Events for the WVPT-PAC and for the Student Conference Scholarship Fund during the reception on Saturday evening. Cash Bar. Conference Location The Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV is located just 2 miles off Interstate 79 at exit 91 and is accessible from all major metropolitan areas within a 4-hour driving radius. Stonewall Resort is a little over one hour north of Charleston, WV and 2 hours south of Pittsburgh, PA. By car take the Roanoke exit (91) from I-79 and follow the signs to Stonewall Resort. This rate includes two meals per day starting with dinner on the night of arrival and ending with lunch the day of departure, morning and afternoon break food and selected resort activities.
