1 EDUCATION PROGRAMS Educational Sessions for Long Term Care + Retirement
2 GENERAL BACK CARE EDUCATION LIFT, TRANSFER AND REPOSITIONING TRAINING & Appropriate for any individual who is interested in learning how to prevent back injury and maintain a healthy back. 1. Prevalence, causes and risk factors for low back injury 2. Basic anatomy of the spine 3. Safe body mechanics for various tasks and activities varies based on need & Our educators in conjunction with your Motion Specialties Representative will provide a hands-on opportunity for participants to apply and use various lift, transfer and positioning equipment safely and correctly. 1. Application and use of client handling equipment 2. Safety steps prior to and during use of equipment 3. Alternate options for sling application SELECTING CORRECT LIFT, TRANSFER AND POSITIONING EQUIPMENT 60 mins to There is a wide continuum of equipment available for lifts and transfers. Often it may be challenging to determine what equipment is appropriate for the client based on their abilities and the environmental barriers they face. This session will cover the range of equipment available and the client and environmental criteria that need to be considered prior to the use of equipment. While the focus will be on mechanical lifts and slings, alternative client handling and repositioning equipment will also be discussed. 1. Categories of lift and transfer equipment based on functional abilities of the user 2. Various slings available for lifts 3. Safety factors for the operation of lifting equipment 3-IN-1 + This session includes General Back Care, Correct Selection of Equipment and Lift, Transfer, and Repositioning Training. SAFE CLIENT HANDLING SEMINAR (TRAIN-THE-TRAINER) half day to This session is an amalgamation of back care, equipment selection and lift, transfer and repositioning training. It is appropriate for members of an Injury Prevention Team or Lifting Champions within your organization. The aim is to coach and empower participants to act as in-house lift and transfer resource personnel.
3 BED SAFETY AND ENTRAPMENT TOP 10 TIPS FOR GETTING (& KEEPING) RESIDENTS IN WHEELCHAIRS The focus of this session is an overview of the seven zones of bed entrapment, as well as the benefits, risks and possible alternatives to bed side rails. 1. Benefits and risks of bed side rail use 2. Bed entrapment risks as categorized by the seven zones of bed entrapment 3. Potential solutions for mitigating entrapment risks This interactive session will reinforce to front-line caregivers how transferring clients into a wheelchair appropriately will often eliminate the need for repositioning later. This session offers solutions to staff to minimize injury and maximize comfort and safety of residents. 1. Importance of good positioning 2. Steps involved to achieve good posture in a wheelchair 3. Correct set-up of seating in a wheelchair FALLS PREVENTION LEAST RESTRAINT USE AND ALTERNATIVES 45 mins This session will enhance your knowledge of the policies, procedures and guidelines used to address falls prevention. We will review the importance of an assessment upon admission in order to identify those residents who are at risks for falls. It will also include a review of prevention approaches through exploring various fall prevention strategies and interventions. The importance of monitoring and evaluating resident outcomes as well as addressing the significant role an interdisciplinary team plays in fall prevention and management will be discussed. 1. Identifying residents who are at risk for falls 2. Strategies to prevent resident falls 45 min Learn how to minimize falls and injury while maximizing the client s right to live at risk. This session focuses on various restraint options as a guide in determining when and where their use is appropriate. 1. Identification of potential causes of falls 2. Alternatives to restraints 3. Correct use of equipment as a restraint 3. Products to prevent and/or minimize the impact of falls
4 UNDERSTANDING THERAPEUTIC SURFACES The focus of this session is to define different types of therapeutic surfaces and understand their importance in a comprehensive treatment plan. Participants will enhance their ability to choose an appropriate therapeutic surface based on contributing factors. 1. Categories of support surfaces 2. 5 RESPIRATORY ASSESSMENT The focus of this session is understanding all the components that comprise a complete respiratory assessment. We will take a systematic approach starting with client history and finishing with a physical examination. A complete respiratory assessment is an essential component of recognising and assessing a client s overall respiratory status allowing for appropriate and effective intervention. 1. Conducting a proper bedside assessment through interview and inspection 2. Review of chest auscultation 3. Proper use of a pulse oximeter CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD) This session is a complete overview of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We will review the definition of COPD and how to recognize signs and symptoms. We will discuss treatment options and how best to manage the disease. Having a better understanding of this chronic respiratory illness will allow for improved focus on client care. 1. Review of signs and symptoms 2. COPD management 3. Treatment options
6 ORAL SUCTIONING 20 min RESPIRATORY PHARMACOLOGY 20 mins Oral suctioning is one component of bronchial hygiene. This session will include a theoretical and practical review of oral suctioning with a focus on safe and effective suctioning techniques. 1. Identifying when suctioning is required with contraindications 2. Suctioning techniques 3. Use of suction equipment and troubleshooting The focus of this session is to gain a better understanding of the respiratory medications that are prescribed to treat both acute and chronic respiratory illnesses. We will review each class of medication with respect to its effect on the respiratory system as well as the mode by which it is delivered to the client. 1. Understanding common respiratory medications 2. Review of delivery devices 3. Matching client s needs with the correct delivery device OXYGEN FUNDING 20 min The Ministry of Health (MOH), through the Home Oxygen Program will assist with the funding of oxygen therapy for those clients that meet the medical eligibility criteria of the program. In this session we will discuss when oxygen therapy is indicated and review the criteria put forth by the MOH. In the event a client does not meet this criteria we explore additional funding options. 1. Indication for oxygen therapy 2. MOH medical eligibility criteria 3.
